View Full Version : I'm trying to test if I can go online with my PSP... Help?

My PSP has a firmware of 1.5, and I definitely don't want to mess with that, but I want to try to go online with my PSP. I used to think that if I went online, it would automatically upgrade the firmware, so I didn't even consider trying to go online. But I've heard that's not the case. I've heard you can go online and avoid having your firmware updated.
Anyways, I followed the instructions in the manual and entered in all the information, but I'm not sure if it's working or not. You know that point in the WLAN Settings when you do a "scan", for it to check for the wireless signal? Well, that part works fine, it sees my router and then I select it but then at the point when you save your settings and you do a "test connection", it says this
A connection error has occurred (80410D09)
So I get this error, but then, when playing Wipeout, I click on "multiplayer", and then I click on "join game", I select my ship, and then it says ... "searching for multiplayer games...." So it seems like it's connecting somehow, but it never finds any multiplayer games. I'm not sure if this is because nobody is playing Wipeout anymore, or if my PSP isn't really online at all. Is there another way I can test this while not having to worry about accidently upgrading my firmware beyond 1.5?

I don't think he plans on updating. He just wants to get online with his 1.5 PSP and keep it that way.
Anthony1, if you are just trying to test your signal, there is a homebrew app called WiFi Sniffer. You just install it and it'll search if there are any WiFi signals that your PSP can pick up and how strong they are.
BTW, make sure the WiFi switch on your PSP is turned on. Can't get online if it isn't.

Yeah, I definitely don't want to update past 1.5. I'm very happy with what 1.5 provides. I need to get another PSP, one with which I'll have the most up to date firmware, so I can play the latest games without worry, but my 1.5 version is my pride and joy. Don't want to mess that up.
So, what about that Wipeout thing? I went on there, and have looked for matches, but haven't found any. Is this a case of it being a launch game and nobody wanting to go online, or am I not really connecting? When I do the scan thing, it finds my network right away. But like I said, when I do a "test connection", I always get that error.
What is one of the more popular online games that I could try to see if I'm really connecting or not?
Also, is there any special hints or tips anybody can give me, in terms of not accidently upgrading my firmware somehow by going online?

Wipeout doesn't have online play - only local multiplayer - though I think it does go online to the Wipeout web site so you can download updates or something.
As for not connecting to the base station, it could just be a weird compatibility issue. 1.5 wasn't too great with wireless support. For example, it completely refuses to connect to access points that don't report their SSID (i.e. "closed" access points). They fixed that in a later firmware release, thankfully. Have you tried punching that error code into Google?
And trust me, there's no way in hell you could accidentally upgrade your firmware. You have to download the update to your memory stick, either select the option to run the updater immediately or manually go to the "Memory Stick" section under the "Game" heading to run the update program, plug in the AC adapter, and then wait several minutes while it writes. If anybody could somehow accidentally do all that, then they deserve whatever happens. Ha ha.

Hooray for unresponsive servers.

Could you explain more about this? This could be my problem.

Anthony1, that is a common error. I even got it the first time I setup my PSP. I set mine up on my wifi connection in my apartment when mine was running 1.5. I am now running 2.7, and have never had to modify my settings at all.
The likely reason you are seeing that error is because you have entered your WEP key incorrectly. Are you using WEP on your router? 1.5 firmware does not support the more secure WPA protocol. If you are not using WEP on your router, you really should, unless of course you like the idea of others using your bandwidth.
As stated already, Wipeout Pure does not use Infrastructure Mode (online wifi) but it does have a web browser you can download something like 6 update packs with new ships, tracks, music, skins for the game. (something you should do if you have not!) So you could test your PSP's connection to your wifi access point by using the Wipeout Pure web browser.
If you still get that (80410D09) error I would suggest deleting that settings file, and starting over.
I actually blogged about this a while ago, here are the bare bones steps that should get you up and running.
1. Flip the Wi-Fi switch to the "on" position on your PSP
2. Go to "Settings"
3. Go to "Network Settings"
4. Select "Infrastructure Mode"
5. Select "-New Connection-"
6. Name the connection
7. In the next screen, press "Scan" to find your Wi-Fi
8. Then, in the following screen, enter the 13 character WEP Key (128 bit WEP seems to work very well with the PSP, and you can get away with only a 13 char. pass)
9. Next, for Address Settings, select "Easy"
10. Save Settings and Test Connection
After you Test Connection, you SHOULD NOT get the (80410D09) error. If you do, and you are sure you have input your WEP key in properly, I would suggest calling Sony. There is a slip in the PSP box with a number to call. I called them on the first day because I wanted to know what (80410D09) was.
I can't exactly remember what the tech told me it was, that was over a year ago! But I believe it has to do with the password. Once I changed to 128 bit, 13 char, I never got that error again.
I have since setup different settings for many other access points, and have yet to see that error again *knocks on wood*
Good Luck!

When you hit "Scan" are you seeing the name of your access point/router? For example mine is Meancode APX. That is my SSID. There is a setting in your router software that will broadcast your SSID, it needs to be broadcast. I assume this is not the problem you have though.
