I tried seeing if this was posted already, but didn't have any luck with the search function.

I stumbled across this in a Canadian Toys R Us promotional e-mail. It's a DVD player also, and the games are mainly trivia and simple word games. There are a few locations to buy it in the US (TRU in the US is not one of them) or you can order it online. I may pick one up as my family likes to play DVD and trivia games, and it lets everyone play at once with up to 6 remotes. Also, I was getting ready to pick up a cheap DVD player anyways!
Here's some articles on the system...

Interesting to see a new console hit aside from the big names, they just need to come out with real games for it. I don't see it becoming even mildly successful because its pretty much just trivia, thanks for the links though.

I just don't see these as game consoles. It is a DVD player with software based board games.
I know it is easy to bring up the whole 3DO/CDI/SegaCD scenario but, while those systems did have what would be considered interactive movies, they atleast were able to render graphics and had actual video games.
I would classify the GameWave as an interactive DVD player, not a "Game Console".

I think it definitely counts as a game machine. It's an extremely basic and unimpressive machine, but it's still a game machine.

that looks... really stupid. and $110?
i do not usually like systems that are not made by big-name publishers (not to sound like a nob or someone that obbsesses over graphics) but the gameplay and graphics are usually horrible! trust me, ive had experience with this kind of stuff.

$100 for a DVD player and some sort of freakish game console thing with 6 controllers? Yeah, I'd pick that up. It'd be good for a party game once or twice. The occasional party game at the Ice residence would kick ass. It sure beats stuffing everyone in the game room.

Don't let that scare you, I'm sure they will be available on clearance for $30 in about three weeks.

If it's a decent DVD player and games are cheap or built-in sounds like a decent deal. Only problem is who the fuck do you go to for repairs? How reliable is the system...

There is a blackjack and a Boggle-type game that look to be rendering graphics, so I still think it's a bit more than an interactive dvd player.

My launch day system still plays DVDs flawlessly :) Yeah, it plays the games flawlessly as well.

Oh, thank fucking god, it launched with a Bible game. How the fuck can you launch a system without a reverent game? Oh yeah, I forgot, Xbox 360bc launched with Condemned. That's a religeous game, right?
I'd get/display it just so people would say "What the hell is that?"
Game Wave now $19.99 + free "game" at TRU for anyone interested in picking it up for posterity.

hmm, I guess it has to be in store. I'd probably buy one for that price.
How much are the other games or do they not have any?

Had two left (one left now)
The sale ended 5/5/07, but she let me get the deal (20 + free game)
The games were still 19.99 though.

Do the "games" work on a standard DVD player? If they do, then isn't this really just a portable DVD player?

Taken from zapitgames.com faq:
Why can’t I play these games on my other DVD player?
Despite it being a fully functioning DVD player, the Game Wave™ is also a custom gaming platform. Game Wave™ games can only be played on the Game Wave™.

I stopped by TRU briefly last night, but all I saw was a bunch of units and games still marked at full price. Was this a limited time offer, a ymmv by store or have some stores just not bothered to do the mark down yet?

At least the Nuon could pull off Tempest 3000. This thing looks like it can only do trivia games and such. Still, I might have to stop by a Toys R' Us and snag one if they're still this cheap. I love oddball game consoles.

When I went, they still had the SALE 75% off sign, so when I took it up, she said it ended 05/05... but still gave me the sale price.
Not sure why they would end the sale since they seem to want to be getting rid of it.
It does say on the card "while supplies last" but then says "through 05/05"

Would this thing qualify as a niche game console? I was thinking of picking one up someday (probably ebay) just for the unique appeal of it, seems to sorta be like a NUON only with much crappier games. Just curious if a system like this could count as a true game system (like get a spot in DP's book a few years from now, like the NUON)
And here I came expecting to see another "Phantom". I'm sorry, but I like my game consoles to be non-existent.
Bojay1997

I think it's as much a "console" as the Memorex VIS or the Nuon. In fact, with the three new releases scheduled to come out, I think it will actually have more releases than the Nuon.

I think you are right, being that this is the only machine that can play these games, they arent just interactive DVD's, heck now I want one, but I'll be damned if I actualy had room on my system shelves for one...
Unfortunately I never make it out to Toys R US as they arent too close by me, so if anyone here is planning on going to pick one up for $20 and wants to be really nice and pick one up for me (I will pay for the system and shipping of course dont worry), PM me if you wanna work something out or maybe I have a game or two you would trade for it. It' on Dark Watcher's console list if that gives it any validity for being a console.

Gemz just came out last week after being on their coming soon list for months. Click and Rewind 2006 are scheduled to be released in the next month. I'm somewhat surprised this is happening given that I don't know anyone that has this unit and Toys R Us appears to be the only retail outlet carrying it.

so I got it sunday... it's pretty darn spiffy.
Looks kind of sexy (reminds of me of the Phantom or something) and the games I got (trivia 1 and 2) are pretty cool so far. they're just like the bartop games (this system should make a bunch of those like the picture puzzles and all that jazz)
the dvd player actually does something my other 3 (including xbox) don't.
I tried watching Star Wars ANH (original theatrical release dvd that came in the last sets) and in those players, I wanted to put the screen at 16:9 to make the pic bigger (it's a small sliver with two fat black boxes.. not sure the AR) and I don't appreciate that, so I tried to make it 16:9, and in those dvd players it doesn't move. The pic remains the same.
This player made it bigger.
I realize I just sounded like I have no clue what I am trying to say.
but yeah.

Here's a link to a small review I did of the Gamewave games a while back.
http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=95017&highlight=gamewave
I got Gemz yesterday, but I haven't had a chance to play it yet. Looks to be pretty standard Bejeweled fare, except for the multiplayer. My girlfriend wants to try it out tonight, so I should have more info about it tomorrow.
If you like NTN trivia or even fast action puzzle games, the system is well worth buying, especially at the $20 mark. I'm trying to find a second one to keep as a backup to mine as it gets used as much as the 360/PS3/Wii in my house (mostly thanks to my girlfriend)!
Ponyone
05-16-2007, 01:58 PM
I wonder if the games can be copied for backups?
Speaking of new ill-fated systems, what happened to the Hyperscan? Target and TRU have the controllers and games deep discounted (all hovering around 5 dollars) but no systems?
I wonder how much they're going for if stores still carry them anywhere.

I was wondering what to make of this system the first time I saw it, took pics with my cell and showed them to people at my work (though it amazes me at how unknowing the people at my work are about games in GENERAL), no one else know what to say either.
My real question: for what it is, and what it's being touted as, is it worth a hundred bucks to sit down with the family and play with? I only saw about four releases at my TRU, and at least one of them was a Bible-based trivia game (which my aunt might enjoy, but the rest of the family... nahh), so even with six possible players is it worth looking at once, let alone twice?

Not sure if it's worth the $100.00 price tag, but for the $20.00 + free game (two games total), I'd say it's very worth it.
Maybe even at $50.00
Great little system though, if priced right.

I went to two TRU locations today in Los Angeles County and both had the system at 75% off or $19.99. Unfortunately, the games were still full price. Not sure why. The sale sign said the system price is good until 12/31/07. Sounds like this is a full on liquidation, but I'm still confused as to why the games are $19.99 each still.

Here's a theory and you can tell me if you think it is right.
By selling the system for $19.99, that means the customer has bought the hardware. This actually forces them to buy games for it, if they want to actually use the system. My point being, why does anyone need to discount games if the customer is going to HAVE to buy games for a new system anyway? Someone is choosing to look at it that way. I don't think the games will drop too much in price until the system is sold out.

I just took a trip to the two local TRU locations where I saw the units on sale for $19.99 (and they still have just about all of them sitting there) and now all the games are gone. I would assume they sent them back, but the employee I talked to didn't seem to know. Is this the same situation elsewhere in the country?

For the folks that are stull hunting this system, they just released another new game. Click this time. It's sort of a hangman/Wheel of Fortune type of game with multimedia clues. I've ordered it from their website, but it hasn't arrived yet.
Also, I did get a copy of Gems. It's a pretty decent version of Bejeweled. The multiplayer is ok, but seems a bit unfinished.
They still have Rewind 2006 listed as coming out, but that's the end of what's been announced so far. Hopefully there will be more, but with all of the retail channels drying up it seems like just a matter of time before it fails completely.

Just picked up one of these at my TRU fro 20 bucks, last one they had. i didn't get a free game, I wasn't aware of that at the time, the guy mentioned it but i guess assumed it meant hte pack-in, I'm not sure if they even had any other games anyway. Gonna go give it a shot.
Anyone know if there is any sort of homebrew/piracy/hacking info on this thing? Hell if I could hack the trivia game up and make my own editions that would be cool.

After having it for a few months, I say pick it up for 20 if you can get it (even 50).
I only have trivia volume one and two, but there is something really cool about everyone playing at the same time. You can have everyone for themselves, or team up. It's really fun for a family or a small get together of friends. Some good old fashion competition. You kind of feel like you're on a game show or something. My family and friends love it.
I'd like to get the other games, but not sure I want to shell out 20 dollars for each just yet.

Im gonna head out to TRU and see if I can find one today. BBQs and get togethers at my place usually find people wanting to play some kind of trivia game. We used to use the Shout About.. series, but since there are none of those coming out any more, this may be a good alternative.

If you were afraid of the $99 pricetag, the actual site is gonna give you 4 free games with it until July 31st... which is pretty much buying the system for 20, plus 4 games (ballparked to $80).
Still 99 dollars, but at least you're getting pretty much all the games for it (the good ones, anyway)

I hate to resurrect a dead thread, but if anyone is remotely interested in collecting the system on the cheap, Toys 'R Us is starting to blow out the games finally . Prices seem to vary by store, but the lowest price I found here in Los Angeles was $4.84 per game last night in Atwater Village. A couple other LA stores had the games for $7.84 and $13.83 which is weird, but look around and your local store should have them in the $5 range. Stores that still have the systems are generally still running the $20 system deal as well, so now is the time to get in if you were on the fence. I'm guessing these games will be hard to find since TRU was the only retailer that stocked them and other than a couple of on-line religious stores and the manufacturer itself, nobody else is carrying it now.

Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately no TRU around here carries these anymore. Anyone want to pick up some games for me for a small fee? I have only these 3 games: 4 degrees Vol. 1, 4 degrees Vol. 2, and ReWind.
I would be interested in any title at $4.84 to $7.84. Let me know if someone can pick up at least 2-3 different games at that price. I would like to get them all, don't know why, but at that price it would be cool.

Who cares? Nobody can force you to collect anything. Some people are completist collectors and frankly, at this price, you can get the entire retail released system and game collection for around $50. Now getting some of the newer games is going to cost more because they never got retail distribution so you pretty much have to buy them direct from the manufacturer. In any event, now is the time to buy if you've been holding out for the liquidaton.
