View Full Version : Cartoon Network ripping off-of Nintendo?!?

Anyone seen the good ol' network lately? I have, and it may not be all that pretty. to clear some things up, I have sent a message to CN about my distress:

dear CN,

I have recently observd a commercial for your cartoon fiday's cartoon block, and noticed something very odd. In the commercial, you used sprites (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_sprite) from varoius video games. amoung them I have observed a human figure dressed in karate clothes. I can confirm with 99.9% proficiency that this is the main star from the Nintendo Entertainment system game "Kung-Fu" So my question is this; did you have permission to borrow these sprites from nintendo?

also, the sound-effects in one of your games based on the show "my gym partner's a monkey" has certain sound effects that sound dangerously close to the ring chime sound in the various early "sonic the hegdehog" games.

copyright infringement is a very serious crime. please report back to me with your response

-a concerned retro videogamer

I wish I could get that same commercial so you could see what I mean.

try e-mailing them yourself, as I'd like to see your results :)

I have recently observd a commercial for your videogame clocks and noticed something very odd.
In the commercial, you used sprites (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_sprite) from varoius video games. amoung them I have observed a human figure dressed in Red Overalls. I can confirm with 99.9567% proficiency that this is the main star from the Nintendo Entertainment system game "Super Mario Brothers" So my question is this; did you have permission to borrow these sprites from nintendo?

Dear Cartoon Network,

I recently observed your series, "Robot Chicken." I can confirm with a 99.999995% accuracy that this show is not funny at all, and simply makes references to obscure late 70s-80s cartoons and television series, while wiggling around poorly constructed action figures. Which also brings up the point that it nearly rips off Action League now which was actually funny.. While again, I must mention this, Robot Chicken is not.

Please do something about how unfunny this show is.
Thank you, and goodnight.

Okay, first of all, I used the term "retro video gamer" because I assumedthat they had no idea that the NES or Digital Press even existed.

second of all, the butter thing is getting a little too out of hand. I can understand if my letter sounds kinda funny, but you don't have to be an ass about it. geez, I did'nt realize they'red be such a big hubbub over "99.9% proficiency" (although in retrospect it was kinda out-there...)

I think you're missing the point. People aren't making fun of you for odd writing, they're making fun of you because you sent a letter in an attempt to put the kibosh on CN's use of retro-gaming imagery, as if it directly harms you. Thus the use of the butter meme.

Posting something like that is just asking for it, especially since countless other shows has done the same kind of thing, but all hell breaks loose when CN does it for a stupid promo.

Anyone remember the Futurama episode with Fry fighting the Space Invaders? The entire epsiode had references (Planet Nintendo 64!), sounds and even characters from games being killed off. If anything it's free advertisement for whoever, since some people will have the sudden urge to play Ms. Pacman or what have you.

In summary, suck it up it's only the internet.

Somebody at CN's promo department is a serious retrogamer. They used to have a promo (I think they were the commercial bumpers for one of their programming blocks) that was seriously ColecoVision-themed. It had blocky spaceships, pixilated explosions, and '80s-style rainbow stripes everywhere. At one point I'm fairly certain you could see Cosmic Avenger in the background.

Later they had a series of bumpers that showed a figure in a spacesuit running though a videogame-like landscape. It was obviously inspired by Metroid; the terrain reminded me of a mix between the NES original and the first Game Boy game. I shoulda taped those spots.

Wouldn't surprise me if they guy who made those bumps is reading this thread right now...

Actually, it can go either way. Commonly, yes, it's video gamer and video game. However, combining the two into a compound word, videogamer and videogame, is still stylistically acceptable, unless previously established in the newspaper/magazine/publisher's in-house style book.

And don't even bother to argue the point with me, as I just looked up this style point today for a college-level text I'm editing.
