I've recently picked up a GBA and a bunch of games. I usually try to follow all of the games that don't make it stateside on consoles, but since this is my first real handheld system, I have no knowledge of what those could be. Are there any really good games that we never got, that don't have heavy Japanese language requirements?

not really, i follow gba releases pretty close, the only ones i can think of are:

in japan, they had more 'classic nes' series of games, they also were available in big red collector's cases that hold i believe 8 or 10 games, that have '20th anniversary' etched in gold font on the cover.

also Mother 1+2 didnt make it stateside, but that has pretty heavy japanese in it of course.

i cant really think of any must play games that we didnt get, nintendo or whoever did a pretty good job of getting games here. there are some anime games that didnt make it, but screw that noise lol.

Brilliant puzzle game, easily on of the best on the GBA, unfortunately it's a bit hard to find these days. Here is a PC demo (800kb) (http://www.msephton.plus.com/champ.zip) that will give you a good idea on how it plays (use z and x to rotate the picture, up to fire a block, down to retrieve it).

Mr Driller Ace. Best portable version of Mr Driller.

Kururin Paradise.

Ah, i didnt know there was a sequal for Kuru Kuru Kururin :) I love this game. One of the few games where i had to unlock all stuff hehe. Was hard. Have to make all levels without hitting the walls, not even once. Now i must pick up Kururin Paradise too.

Handhelds are non-region specific? Or am I totally wrong on this.. I heard that they weren't, and this would most definitely be the best place to find out whether I've been played for a moron or not =D

There are no region stuff on handhelds.

Thanks, guys. Kurkuru definitely looks like something to grab. This'll go a long way to making my subway trips seem less long and boring.

Yes to KuruKuru Kururin - its one of my favourite games of all time - European and Japan exclusive.

Kururin Paradise in my opinion is not as good but still - its more kururin loveliness, Japan release only - adds a lot of new stuff to the old Kururin formula. I actually have a spare copy if anyone's interested, i'm in the UK though

Holy crap that Kuru sequel looks gorgeous!

Is the Mr Driller anything like the DS version or is it better? Worse? Longer? Shorter? I love Mr Driller. :)

Super Mario Bros 2 from the famicom mini line. There's a boatload more that got released there but not here worth noting.

If you can read the basic japanese written languages, the three Mother games are worth the effort.

the Goemon game(s) released for the GBA was pretty ok, not a must have but if you can find it cheap its worth picking up.

Hikaru no Go 2. (http://www.danielthomas.org/pop/videogames/go.htm)

Always has been one of my favorite GBA games; ironically, now that the comic it's based on is appearing in the States, we've moved on to the DS. In a perfect world, Konami would have brought it over here so everyone could have a play.
