I just picked up a Nintendo 64 today, and I'm wondering what games to get for it. Is there a best of list somewhere? In particular, what 2D games are good (if any)? Also, what's an average flea market price for a loose cart?

So far the only game I have is Turok (came with the system). It's a perfect example of the kind of game I HATE.

Thanks!

Just thought I'd add that this is the most modern console I own!

Mischief Makers is a 2D fighting game. And is actually quite fun. It had amazingly poor sales as well, as that one *could* be a rarity ina few years. It's made by treasure as well.

I've heard lots of good things about Mischief Makers (another 2D Treasure game). You probably shouldn't bother with Yoshi Story, though.

I forgot about Yoshi's story. It's very short, but a good game if you have about an hour free.

Mischief Makers (Yuke Yuke Troublemakers in Japan)
Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaioh (also by Treasure, Japan-only)
Yoshi's Story (utterly boring crap)

That's about all I can think of. Slim pickin's.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy is 2D, but something tells me you'd hate that too. :)

'Tis true... the N64 library isn't well stocked with 2-D games. Here are the 2-D games that come to mind. Some have 3-D visuals but are played along the lines of conventional 2-D games.

*Asteroids Hyper 64 (crap remake of the classic... too busy!)
*Batman Beyond (utter shit side-scrolling fighter)
*Bust A Move 2 and Bust A Move '99 (great w/ N64 controller)
*Clayfighter 63 1/3 and Clayfighter Sculpter' Cut (crap fighters)
*Dr. Mario 64 (not much different from SNES game, still fun)
*Goemon's Great Adventure (don't confuse w/ 3-D Mystical Ninja)
*KI: Gold
*Madden 2002 (contains "classic" mode of Genesis games)
*Midway's Greatest Hits (Robotron, Defender, Joust, Sinistar, Spy Hunter, and the ultimate... Tapper!)
*Mischief Makers (bizarre platformer from Treasure)
*Mortal Kombat Trilogy (crap)
*Mortal Kombat Mythologoes: Sub Zero (utter crap)
*Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness (addicting game, plus the original)
*Namco Museum 64 (Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Pole Position, Galaga, Galaxian, Dig Dug)
*The New Tetris
*Paper Mario
*Pokemon Puzzle League (better than expected)
*Rampage: World Tour and Rampage 2: The Great Escape
*Rat Attack
*South prk: Chef's Luv Shack (bad bad bad)
*Space Invaders (boring)
*Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth (vertical shooter, 2-D gameplay)
*Transformers: Beast Wars (my word this game sucks)
*Wetrix
*Worms Armageddon (AWESOME with 2 or more players!)
*Yoshi's Story

*Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaioh (Japan import) is a really fun little shooter, but not as good and much more expensive than the DC port (Bangai-O!)

Pick up Goemon's Great Adventure if you like platformers. It has 3D looks but plays out in 2D for the most part. Wacky and a lot of fun.
