I've been thinking about this as I work on an article. Beggar Prince has a run of 600 units, but what about those 2600 and other hombrew and retro releases that are sold at Atari Age and other places? How many are usually sold before a game is considered successful?

Not counting your neighbor, personal friends, or parents.

Feet of Fury on Dreamcast had 5500 copies pressed.
The Inhabitants (again, Dreamcast) had 1000 pressed.
Maquipai (Dreamcast...) also had 1000 pressed.
I don't know how many Cool Herders were pressed.

I would think most homebrew authors are not primarily coding for a dead system to really make money. So I would but I would say as long as they recover their manufacturing, packing, and shipping expenses then the game is a success.

I think the price point of Beggar Prince is just about right and if they sell even half the 600 cartridges it is a hugh success. I know there are a number of releases for other systems that I'd love to get, but I'm not going to spend $75 on a cartridge. Sometimes outside factors I think work to limit a releases success.
