How much would the value increase for a PS1 game if it used the original "long box" packaging?

Probably not a whole lot, because most of the long box games aren't that sought after. Now, I should say, I don't know a lot about the long box collecting, and there are probably some more difficult long box games to find. But as a general rule (games like descent, ridge racer) I wouldn't pay any extra. But that is just me. In fact, I advise you to not take my sole opinion, and wait for some of the "long box" guys to weigh in on this topic.

but probably not

it depends on the game...but, not much, if any.....

Not sure what you mean...if you mean long box vs. jewel case for the same title, like Doom or Loaded, I'd pay more for the long box version. If you mean just in general, it's hard to say without going into specifics.

You've got a very creepy username.

from my experience the jewel case versions of some of them are far far harder to find
isn't the mk3 jewel version extremely hard to find?

I know xcom ufo defense is one of the more expensive long box ones, and resident evil is sought after by fans of that...series.
but one thing i can say for sure, sports games are still worthless long box or otherwise ;-)

Dangerboy's or Papastu's PSX "Spidey Senses" should be going off right about now...

Anyway, it really varies from game to game. Some games are rarer with jewel case, some with longbox. Some only have longbox, and some are just about equal. However, the one thing you need to remember, is to look out for Space Hulk "longbox" version. It is in quotes because I'm not sure if it was ever concluded whether or not it exists as an officially release game and not just mock-up art.

X-Com was never released in a non-longbox version, so I wouldn't count that one. You're right about the RE longbox though. The last time I checked, that one was going for around $20-$30 whereas the jewel case version was about half that.

IMO, the longbox version of D is a lot harder to find than the jewel case version even though the DP guide says the opposite. I've seen 3 complete copies of jewel D in my 5 years of PS1 collecting as opposed to just one, crappy ex-rental longbox copy.

I know Warhawk can go for a good amount.

Where was that list of long box games again?

Hmm..if Vectorman's calling my appearances, does that mean he has a Dangerboy Spider-Sense...Spider-Sense?

The only honest answer is, "Are you kidding me?"

Joking aside, the whole long box value is not based on game per se, but per variant.

First things first, check here:
http://www.game-rave.com/psx/playstation_perfect_guide/longbox/index.html

This is every known variant related to a long box release Stu and I have been able to track down. Right now there are several long box variants that are rarer than the actual long box version. There are jewel case variants that are insanely rare compared to their LB versions.

I've seen MK3's jewel case version twice. 10 years apart. I bought it the second time, incomplete, haven't it seen it since. I'm still looking for the back insert.

Other rare jewel case releases include Hi-Octane, the NON-GH version of Ridge Racer, ESPN Extreme games (NOT it's GH Version of 1xtreme), and PGA Tour '96.

The two hardest LB Variants to find would be the cardboard versions of Tecmo World Golf and Bottom of the Ninth.

I've tried repeatedly to see if Sony or the individual companies kept track of the information, but it seems all is lost (which I don't get, someone would have to have the art files somewhere >_>).

Hope this helps,
Jason

I thought I felt something tingling in my pants earlier, but I passed it off as a testosterone surge from playing GTA:LCS.

Besides DB's in-depth on the money answer and Vectorman's earlier 'lite' version theres little I can add.

In all honesty overall? Little. There are a few 'desired' longboxed games that bring in some good money, and no matter which version (if they've got a version) or are just Longboxed they need to be complete to really get any money. You might get lucky with someone wanting a longboxed Resident Evil or something that got a jeweled release and paying a little more, but thats much more the rarity than the norm.

@norkusa
I've actually seen way more copies of the Longboxed D than I have the Jewel I think i've seen maybe 2 or 3 Jewel cased ones (including the one I own) as compared to a good 6-10 longboxes.

The long boxes I own and are 100% complete:
Doom (5-$15)
Descent (1-$1)
Ridge Racer (1-$3)
Wipeout (1-$3)

*Based off the DP Rarity Guide
Scaricity: Quite common except Doom.
Values: Near nothing, except Doom.
Doom does have a bigger following and therefore demand so it's a higher value. I purchased these games for $5, $2, $2, $1 respectively about 2yrs ago at an EB games. Personally I like the Descent game the most because it's an upgraded graphical version from the PC with lighting effects and all.

...ranting a bit...
Although most don't care about the older Descent games Maximum is the better one clocking in at a wonderful $2 value and rarity of 5. It is in a jewel case title and unlike the first Descent that memics the PC game, Maximum utilizes the same engine, sprites, weapons, and textures of the second Descent game on PC but with completely different levels! Great game for any that stumble across it, but in addition Descent 1 & Maximum are linkable PS1 multiplayer. :D

Most longboxes aren't worth much, but I have a few of them that usually go for quite a bit.. Discworld, Psychic Detective, Braindead 13, D, Raiden Project, Lemmings, and Cyberia. Price really all depends on how much you're willing to pay for what you like to collect, or who you sell them to.

It used to be that you could get long boxes *very* cheaply at Gamestop...I'm talking a dollar or less. But with a lot of those stores clearing out the PSX sections, it's going to be interesting to see what happens to the value of these games.

I've recently started trying to collect all the long box games and their variants. Although most of the games suck, I have been paying a little more for them because it's what I wanted to get. So basically price is determined by what someone is willing to pay for it. I have found though, contrary to a couple of posts, that the jewel versions of D and the original (black label) Resident Evil are a little harder to find than their longbox counterpart. I was lucky enough to buy both of these the other day complete for 22 dollars.

I don't get why anyone would prefer the longbox version of any particular game. I thought everyone hated longboxes.

i thought we determined that space hulk long box was just a promo display thing and that it doesnt actually exist and was never released as a long box, just as a regular small size jewel case.....
