First of all, I did not post this to offend or p**s anyone off but rather because I would love to hear everyone's input about my situation....ok, that out of the way...

I'm about one month off from receiving my yearly bonus at work and been thinking about going on a shopping spree. Been spending a lot of time looking at what to buy...as for now I'm considering one of the following investments:

Japanese Sega Saturn with all must-play titles.

Dreamcast with all must-play titles

Turbo Duo-R with all must-play titles

Rebuying a Super Famicom with all my old-time favourites.

What's your views...especially on the Saturn vs.Dreamcast collections...where should one start? Also, any other thing/system/series/whatever that you would buy.

Seriously dude it's your coin buy something youve always wanted to.Me if I had the cash I would build myself an arcade cab.

Been thinking of getting a MAME cab actually...just difficult because of space issues and the fact that I move quite often...

Just posted because I did not want to go spending a lot of cash and then afterwards think of something, which would have been even more fun to buy...hmm.

But between the two...which to go for first...does the Saturn have any good RPGs in english?

Instead of a Dreamcast or Saturn, I would buy the following...

Neo-Geo AES with all six Metal Slugs.

the saturn didn't have a whole lot of exceptional/traditional rpgs.

dragon force was an interesting strategy rpg, and shining the holy ark (i think that was the full title) was a great dungeon crawler, shining wisdom was a terrible terrible zeldaish game
then theres um...virtual hydlide...which I liked...but everyone else thought it was crap..
the 3 hard to find rpgs that came out near the end of the saturn's life were shining force 3, that one just didn't come out very good in 3d..way too short for what you'd have to pay for it, they were trying that stupid strategy of splitting a game up into 3 releases so you'd have to pay more for it..but they never released parts 2 and 3.
panzer dragon saga is spose to be really good..but i can't give much insight on it as i never got it. and last is magic knight rayearth, if you like cutesy anime girlies running around stabbing stuff..it was alright but praobly not worth its current market value.

the saturn wasn't terribly good for rpgs.
the dc had a few more and might be a better choice if you like rpgs, i've noticed the only really good games for the saturn are mostly shooters overall (and i'm to understand mostly japanese to boot)

hopefully that helps some ;-)

don't forget about albert odysey and Legend of Oasis for saturn RPGs. If you like old style final fantasy rpgs then Albert Odysey is the way to go. Legend of Oasis is sort of a zelda-style action rpg but its lots of fun. Panzer dragoon saga is in fact a great rpg but it costs lots of loot.

Go for the Dreamcast. Plenty of good RPGs on that and iirc it's not lacking anything from any of the other genres.

Out of your choices, I'd go with the JPN Saturn. There's tons of shmups (one of my favorite genres) to choose from, including spendy titles like Radiant Silvergun and Battle Garegga, as well as other non-shmup arcade ports and arcade like games (I.E. Cyberbots, Elevator Action Returns, Bubble Symphony, The King of Fighters 96 & 97, Guardian Heroes [probably cheaper then the U.S. version] etc.). Theres tons of arcade style games for the system if that's your kind of thing. Those types of games would be a wise investment, especially if you don't know a lick of Japaneese.

However, if this were me, I wouldn't hesitate for a Neo Geo AES and some expensive, complete AES games. Get the pricey ones out of the way first, then focus on the more budget friendly ones in the future.

EDIT Although, the PC-Engine did get a lot of cool games too, that would also be import friendly. Just counting the shmup genre alone, there's well over 100 titles to choose from. If you do go with NEC's console, I'd suggest just picking up the Japanese PC-Engine Duo instead. As you said, money isn't an object, and the JPN system got so much more then the U.S. Turbografx-16. I realize that the CD part is region free, but there's tons of exlusive JPN Hu-cards worth owning too.

If money was no object I'd drop it on JP Saturn as well. Great variety, FAQ/translations for the best RPGS (Shining Force Series), tons of great shooters... Much better than US Saturn.

DC would be my other choice -- either US or import. Neo Geo would be nice, also -- but I just can't drop the necessary scratch on AES. CD or MVS is the way to do it.

I assume you mean 'money not an issue' to mean a reasonable amount of money, not $10k+. If you're talking that kind of money -- crazy money -- AES would be great, coz you could get so much cool stuff.

Turbo Duo-R with all must-play titles
Heh, that's almost exactly what I was thinking when I read your post's title. Since money is not an issue, throw in some video mods on that console too.

Of course, I'm biased because I already have a Japanese Saturn (well, US Saturn with region switch), a Dreamcast (missing the must-play titles though), and a Super NES with the tabs removed so I can play Super Famicom games. If I DIDN'T already have those and had to pick one, I'd go for the Super NES/Super Famicom. I gotta have my super Mario All-Stars, Castlevania IV, Space Megaforce, and Super Metroid.

Arcade/MAME cabinets would be up there, but would be too bulky for me right now since I will likely move before too long.

Other things I'd consider:

S-Video modded Atari 2600.

A better dedicated gaming TV. I have a 52" DLP, but it's a bit big for the classics. Maybe import a Japanese RGB TV.

Extra PC dedicated to MAME and DOSbox games with whatever hardware is necessary to output to the TV.

If you do go for a Neo Geo, go for MVS or CD. There's no point burning money unnecessarily.

You've then got two options - consolize or Supergun. At least with a SG you can play some other JAMMA boards, and get that TV on its side for some Tate shmupping.

Unless you have the room for a cab?

Hmm interesting topic to say the least, so must buys if I had no limits on spending cash, pfft easy. LOL

Sega Saturn with a lot of shmups, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, other fighting games, Dracula X Nocturne in the Moonlight

Import PSX and PS 2 with more shmups goodness, Bubble Bobble/Rainbow Islands (Acclaim) (also working on that particular one right now), Taito Legends 2 (US release date still hasn't been determined), and the two Taito Memories packs.

PC Taito Legends 2, don't feel like importing, awaiting to snag it off Ebay from a US seller if ever I can find one.

Edit: Also a Dreamcast (one that doesn't overheat) and the shmups and fighters on it.

I would buy every single video game ever made, every copy, and every computer, server, hub, everything that's anything consisting of video game intellectual property.

Screw a MAME cab, if money was no issue I'd buy all original cabs and--dammit--not just one CPS2 or MVS cab, either, one for each game. Then, of course, I'd buy a house with a nice huge room to put them all in. That'd be pretty sweet.

Only after that would I think much about buying consoles.

As for your question, I'd definitely recommend the Dreamcast over the Saturn. The Dreamcast has a strong selection of games in almost every genre and meets or exceeds the quality of Saturn's selection even in the Saturn's strongest genres like shooters, fighters or racers. I'd personally also go for a killer SNES collection before a Saturn collection, too.

All three are great systems, though (the three best in my opinion) and there's no reason to have only one of them. All three systems with good collections would seem preferable to just one even if you had "all of the must-have titles" for it.

1. Duo
2. Saturn
3. DC

no real great explanation other than thats the order i enjoy them in. alot of the great (in my opinion) DC games are available on other systems and i dont think i would put any DC RPG in my top 200 games of all time.

Yeah, I personally would buy a Turbo Duo RX with tons of great games.

Then again I already have a Neo-Geo AES with tons of great games. The AES has games on a different level of good.....if you want an excellent selection of great games to play that would be the way to go!

As some people said, I'll buy every system, games and prototypes ever made. Then I'll buy a warehouse, or small building, and create the biggest Video game museum ever built on the face of the earth. And if money doesn't matter, it will even be free to get in.

More reastically, if I got a bonus like you, and wanted to spend it all in games. I'd pay myself a trip to Japan and a couple of big suitcases and visit all of the bigest Video game shops there. I was in Japan three weeks ago, and this was my wish.

The first game-related thing that came to my mind was a bunch of Drummania arcade machines.

Edit: But, er, on the topic of classic gaming I'd probably get a complete DC collection first.

I would buy a ton of midgets and play mario kart against them.
:above me:

I'd probably buy (not lease) a vacant building, close to the nearest local interstate interchange, to build a retrogaming museum, fill it with real live vintage coin-ops and systems, set a low cover charge (and have some t-shirts and stuff made up), advertise a bit, and then just sit back. Even if people stop showing up, I've got a paid-for building full of old arcade games! Everyone wins. :D
