View Full Version : Issues with Forgotten Worlds for Genesis?

A couple weekends ago I attended Midwest Gaming Classic. Great show, lots of neat stuff. I practically wiped out my "wanted" list for not a lotta dough. One of those games was Forgotten Worlds for the Genesis, which I was able to find (after a bit of shopping around) for $10 complete and in good shape.

I finally got a chance to clean the cartridge today. I popped the cartridge in and it started fine. Pressed Start to get to the menu options then Start to begin the game. It went through the opening screens and then went black, music still playing. There was a flicker and then I get the Game Over screen, bringing me back to the title.

I didn't have time to open the cart up to do some heavy cleaning, but I just wanted to know if anyone had a similar issue. I'm using a Sega Model 1 (no security lockout) attached to a Sega CD Model 2 and I'm using a Sega brand six-button control pad. When I get home tonight I'll test it on my Genny model 2.

A long time ago, I was at a ... well, former friend's house. He also had a Forgotten Worlds cart, and he said it was unbeatable. I called him on it and said I could do it.

Well, the same glitch happened. I dunno why, I guess it's an issue with certain Genesis models... I thought it was a cart problem but now I'm not so sure.

Try using the mode button on your 6-button pad. You could also try using a 3-button pad. I had the same problem and that fixed it for me.

Yeah, I ran across this in the awesome-in-a-bottle that is the DP Knowledge Base. To quote the solution:

This game is only compatible with certain Genesis controllers. In order for this game to run properly, you need an original Genesis controller with the red letters on the ABC buttons. Some black-lettered controllers will work, and some six button controllers will work if the "Mode" button is held down during start-up. Getting your hands on a red-lettered controller seems to be the only sure fire way around the problem, though.

Y'know...even though the link is staring me right in the face in the menu on the left I never thought to look there!

Thanks for the tip (thanks to Mr. Smashy for the original controller tip) and thanks for the reminder!

I've had that same issue after recently buying the game, apparently the mode button on my 6 button is shot as holding the mode button does nothing. Looks like I have a Genesis 6 button pad purchase in my future.

I also read about this issue while googling about it awhile back, and all that time I thought I had a faulty cart.

Weird, as I have the same problem with TWO copies of Forgotten worlds. I play on my Sega Genesis NOMAD and I get that same game over screen. WTF? Are you sure it's a Controller thing?

It's definitely a controller thing. I've had this game returned to my store for this very thing, and showed the customer the "magic trick" of holding the mode button down (or trying a different controller). I never knew about this glitch before, we stumbled into it at a NAVA meeting not too long ago.

Other old school GEN games need the mode trick as well. To mind comes DeCap Attack. But there are a host of others...

Anyone have a link to these? It would come in really handy.

I got it from a sega newsgroup. Can't find it now but you can take a look for yourself on google groups. I did find the following however posted on 2/20/06.

Ironic huh?

I ran into the same problem with forgotten worlds.I was looking through
digital press one day on my pc when I spotted a question about a person
not being able to play forgotten worlds. They said the solution was to
use the original red letter abc button controller or the black abc
buttons could also work.It fixed my problem. They also talked about the
mode button on the six button controller but they could'nt state it's
reliability.Used 3 button genesis controllers are very easy to get. Most
game shops handle them.I bet if you use a 3 button controller DeCap
Attack will work.Digital Press IMHO is a very reliable an informative
publication.Hope this helps.

Ahh! That's why it worked before! I must have done that by accident!
