I was sorting through a stack of papers in the basement last night and found a want/shopping list I must have made 2 years ago for either the Philly classic or a NAVA meeting. Nothing on the list was exceptionally rare or difficult to find, just average things I was looking for: 2600 Supercharger, NES toploader, NES multicart, Super Gameboy. I was happy to see that despite misplacing this list that all of these items were indeed acquired since then.
The areas where I failed were a TG express and hu cards. I also listed an assortment of 8 bit atari cartridges, and since then have only managed to score a small subset of them, giving me a barely passing grade in that catagory.
So how do you guys do? Are you a seeker or stictly on oportunity buyer (ie. you see it you buy it, otherwise you don't care).

i have a list of a lot of games i want, divided by systems i have, and then i will usually buy in spurts. buy for like a week and then not buy anything for 6 months. When i do buy its usually a lot and about 90% of the stuff is on my list

I stick to my goals and sometimes deviate off them with one or two items that later are added to my goals.

I'm an opportunity buyer. The only goals I have for myself are to acquire certain random games I want to play, so in a sense I guess you could say that I do have some very small goals. :-D

I need serious help on this one - there are no goals (other than I want it all, and I want it now), and there is no control.
I see it, I buy it (or bid on it).
My only constraints are condition and "do I already have this."

I have a list of nes games that I want to buy. I made it when I started collecting. When I come across one of the games I buy it, even if it is a little bit above a reasonable price. (I usually don't like to pay too much for my games.)

While I do have guidlines surrounding the systems I actively collect for and the games I enjoy playing, I will pick up any good deal if it comes up - mainly for trading or profiteering if it doesn't fall within the scope of my interest.
I do notice that I go through phases, though. For example, if I find a few Sega Genesis games that I've really wanted, my focus will shift on collecting more Gen games. But then, if I come across some 2600 carts, my focus shifts over to more 2600 carts. Sometimes this causes me to miss things that I usually try to find actively, but forget about when caught up in another realm.

Generally for the older systems, I buy whatever I don't have, as long as it is under a certain price point (generally $3 for Atari).
For newer systems, I try to focus on watching a few "key" titles, and then I wait for them to drop below a particular price point...generally, if it hits $20 or less, I'll get it then.
The only time I ever set goals is when I'm going to a show...I know that certain things, I'm likely to see them only this one time in a year...
The last show I went to was Cinciclassic...my top 5 goals were: 1. DP Guide #7, 2. Video Game Bible, 3. No.2 Games Greatest Hits (PC), 4. Atari Lynx, 5. Dusty Diamond Softball for NES...and that was all I was going to buy...
I ended up coming home w/ #1 through #3...and about 3 bags full of TI994A / Odyssey2 / NES games, a free NES system, a Fighting Stick for the Genesis, and a bunch of other random stuff...
Well, I hit a couple of my goals at least :)
I just wish I could get to Philly this year :(

Hmm, I generally get everything within reason. My top goals are DC and NES at this point, but I'll never pass up anything else (everything from atari to game.com and beyond) I don't know how far I'll go with NES, I can't see myself (right now) paying $400+ for one cart. But DC is almost done, so maybe then I'll move to SMS or something.

I decided back in '97 that I will own every US released NES game made. All I need now is 104 more games and the quest is over. I don't know if I'll complete the collection but at least I've got all the toughies (Panesians, Aladdins, AE's, & 6-in-1's).

Are you kidding? I don't make goals, and when I do I break them asap. I set a goal for world domination, but gave up after three minutes and fifteen seconds after I realized it would likely involve heavy lifting.

What are these goals of which you speak? I have not heard of such things...
I just buy whatever I find that looks cool. Sometimes there are certain games I want, and if I get them, cool, if not, oh well. It's a good system for me ;)

I do watch for particular games, but I am not sure I would say I set goals. There are some games I have been " watching " for too long a time. So if it was considered a goal I would have failed.
