Most of the games with sequel after sequel are some of the best gaming has to offer. Mario,Final Fantasy Resident Evil , Metal Gear etc

But what about the dogs. All hype and no bite.

No sports games no kiddie games and girl games don't count either or Mary Kate and Ashley might have a lock. I'm looking for a series than has appeared than no less than 2 seperate generational units (ie snes then N64) or even (nes then PS2)

Well, a few of my friends can't stand the F-Zero series, but I don't mind it. Along side of it is also the Extreme-G games, which once again I like to play from time to time, but I know a few people who also can't stand them. Although they fall under racing sports, they are the immediate series I can think of.

the motherfucking "Saga" series! :(

(Romancing Saga, Saga Frontier, Unlimited Saga, Final Fantasy Legends, etc)

The entire series is a trainwreck of broken half baked ideas and and pissed away originality. For every innovative thing the games try, they fuck up at least two basic things.

For the love of god, just let the series die.

It's gotta be Driver. Ever played Driver 3? It's too hard! And let's not forget driver 2, The police in that game are CRAZY! Once, I turned on the Invincibility cheat then went in "Survivor" Mode, and i managed to get caught in a corner, next thing i know the cop cars are juggling my car! LOL x_x

I agree with those hunting games, so damn boring. Same with the american football games.

I just picked up Driver Parallel Lines Limited Edition for $20 because I heard it was the, "we're sorry we fucked you in the ass and stole your money with Driver 2, Driv3r, and Stuntman" edition. Most people say it's pretty generic, which sounds to me like they did wonders on improving the core gameplay after Driv3r!

I never saw what people liked about the first couple of Resident Evil games and they continue still.

The Driver series is a tough series but I like them and think that the racing/action in them is great.

I also thought that Tekken was one of the worst franchises. Not very fun, not original and I've never been a fan of the graphics.

I think that Tomb Raider started out great but got old really quick. They still continue that one too.

Note: I don't mean to offend anybody with my choices, if I do I'm sorry. ;)

-Final Fantasy

In my opinion, the series should have just went out with a bang and ended it at number 8. XI,X,X-2 all seemed like petty cash in's to me. Crystal Chronicles, XII, ect. Have the same feeling of from me. I'm just not interested, and I'm sorry to say it. I do have respect for the series though. Even though I hated FFX, I can give it credit as being an epic story driven RPG with great music and incredible graphics(I'd advise anyone to play through atleast once).

-Crash Bandicoot

C'mon already! This series has been in the toilet since CB:Warped on the original PlayStation!!! It just seems to get worse with each sequel, let it die already people!

-Spyro

Once again, I feel this series has been dead since the PSX days as well. I believe the 3rd Spyro was the peak of this product line.

-Tony Hawk's Pro Skater

I was always a big fan, I loved 1,2 and I still play THPS3 on a regular basis. But I feel that the THPS/THUG/whatever, games have really gone down hill and it's time to kill it. However the new Tony Hawk's Project 8 looks like it might just breath some new life into the THPS name sake. 8-)

I would add GTA to the list, but I still love those games to death(even if they are starting to get a touch stale).

RTS is actually good. It's from the same guys that made Dark Reign II (and uses the same engine, IIRC) and it shows.

Mmh, Final Fantasy IS A NES/SNES series.
Shot yourself in the foot there, didn't you......

Which one you shove up someone's ARSE?

SNES FF2 perhaps???? Might improve the gameplay.

Nintendo users are just jealous that Square didn't continue with FF on their home gaming devices.

Are you serious? I love Rayman! Rayman Arena sucked, and Hoodlum's Revenge is pretty lame, but the 4 main games all rocked.

or why do we need a KAO the Kangeroo 2?

That was pretty random. Nobody cared about KAO on DC, and that was like 5-6 years ago. This sequel came out of nowhere. But it's only two games.

I'll vote for Final Fantasy, FF4 and FF6 are the only ones I really enjoy.

Also the King of Fighters series; every year they take the same game and throw in 5 new backgrounds, then sell it for $350.00 (AES)

Actually there's so many other things I could mention. I mean look at the titles for the PS2 and Xbox 360, half of them are up to part 4 or 5, and none of them interest me at all. But I can't mention them because I haven't actually played them.

Here is a creative answer for all of you.

How about NONE?

Some series are better than others. That is a fact.

My opinion is that any series which is long in the tooth is that way for a reason. Either there are commercial or artistic reasons for a game company or developer to continue down that path. The people behind the game either really love the character and have further stories to tell or the people buying the game create the demand. One way or another, there is always a reason for each series going on.

Let me put it to you this way: Would you get tired of creating new adventures or games for Mario, Sonic or the characters from Contra/Resident Evil/Castlevania, etc.? No, you wouldn't. So why would the people who put these games together?

Most of the series that were stale or needed to "die" have already been put to rest. While I was one of the few who really liked him, Bubsy is a very good example along with many of those other mascot characters which were merely a rip off of Sonic/Mario. Aero the Acrobat, Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel, Rocky Rodent, Mr. Nutz, etc. Battletoads weren't doing anything that the Ninja Turtles weren't already doing in their games. They weren't THAT different.

Someone mentioned Kao the Kangaroo. Even if the first game flopped, someone liked him enough to try again and thought it might have been a hit the second time around. It is always worth a try since you never know when magic might strike. What if nobody ever decided to create a sequel to Mega Man or Street Fighter, neither of which burned up the charts?

Tekken

oi! nooooooooooooo! (surpose your right, the tekken series went crap after TAG)

series that should die:

Super Mario.

yeah it's not bad, but nintendo are going to milk and milk it until it's a load of crap. i think with the release of the new super mario on ds, it's time to throw in the towel.

same with sega's sonic - alltho, that shoulda died when they turned it to 3d, sonic adventure and onward are a right stinking pile..

First and Foremost the Mega Man series - hey I LUV the little blue bomber too but enough is enough.

as Roushimsx wrote the freaking Saga series I mean was it ever good?

the Driver series also although ive heard that parallel lines was OK, but Drive3RRR or whatever stunk to high heaven, its time to end the now wanna be GTA and that includes the True Crime series as well, even though True Crime:New York wasnt near as terrible as most ppl say IMO.

after drudging through the mediocre at best storyline and generic characters of Final Fantasy X I would have said the Final Fantasy series BUT I am looking forward to FF12 once it is released here in the states.

I have to agree with the few that pinned the King of Fighters series also, even though its one of my many favorite 2-D fighters its just time to put it to an end.

FPS shooters- 80% of these should have NEVER been released and are mediocre at best and so freaking repetative , I just dont see what is soo fuckin great about the majority of FPS out there.

so my list is:

Mega Man - not a BAD series it just needs to end
the Saga series - Yeah a BAD series
possibly the FF series if FF12 turns out to be as shitty as Final Fantasy X.
the king of fighters series- just needs to end
and First Person Shooters =most of them.

OK now for asurprise vote, hey everyone luvs surprises.

and....it...is

the METAL GEAR series- of course not a BAD series lol

OK let me explain ppl.

IF Kojima leaves Metal Gear COMPLETELY after MGS4:Guns of the Patriots the METAL GEAR series should end there.

NO KOJIMA = NO REAL METAL GEAR IMO.

and I mean ALL of the Metal Gear series be it original/Solid/spinoffs/metal gear Raiden or WTF ever might come after Metal Gear Solid 4.

Let me reinterate that I think of the Metal Gear Solid series as the greatest videogame series EVER -tied with Zelda of course ;) and I dont want to see on of my most beloved series take the same dark path form being a once AAA videogame to a mediocre has-been wore-its-welcome-out game series as so many other once brilliant game series/trilogies etc have done before.

Without Kojima as both the Director and Producer the series will lose its soul , mark my words ppl IT just wont be the same IF Hideo Kojima leaves the Metal Gear series altogether, meaning no role at all , be it as Producer, assistant this or that, adviser or whatever.

Im in a similiar state of mind about Mortal Kombat right now.

Ive been playing the hell out of MK2 and MK3 lately on Midway Arcade Classics vol.2 but I think the LAST MK I will buy is the upcoming Armageddon on current gen PS2, I mean with ALL of the old and NEW Kombatants Its a must buy for an old-school MK fan like me.

I do think the series will struggle big time with the Next Generation and it might be best if the series did end with Armageddon.

Armored Core is a series that needs a serious overhaul. They add on basically "expansion packs" to every sequentially numbered sequel, and even when they release a new one I get the feeling that, "I have done this before."

Madden realy... EA keeps pumping them out.

Dunno for some reason these mindless !#$$, keep buying them

Don't quite know the sales of EA games directly affects you enough to insult those that purchase the game, except to assume you are an evil 2K Sports programmer (I doubt it but just in case). Some words of advice: take out the charge up feature in most of your games, I don't want to have to mash my buttons to get my baserunner to run hard to first base, not everyone is made of large blocky polygons, and clean up your menus as most of them are cumbersome.

If you had taken the time to read the initial post, you would have noticed that buyatari requested no sports games, but I would have just ignored your post if you had some justification besides just insulting a game (and calling its user base mindless !@#'s) that I doubt you have much experience with or even passing interest in. Most sports games haters don't even have a passing interest in sports, making their points incredibly shallow and redundent.

+1 for you I guess

Why do people rag on the sports games? I think it's silly to buy Madden X in year X when you can get it in year X+1 for almost nothing, but a well-made sports game is great fun. I've had tons of fun with the NHL games, various golf games, and not-so-sim sports games like NFL Blitz, NBA Jam, Arch Rivals, etc. At their best they are good, arcadey fun -- and for real aficianados there's a TON of depth to a modern sports sim.

Anyway, I can't think of too many series that need to go away -- I do wish that Koei would introduce some innovation to the Dynasty Warriors series (although, they did with DW: Empires) like they did with the Three Kingdoms spinoffs Dynasty Tactics...

I really dislike the Myst/Riven games, but they seem do have died recently. I pretty much detest those games, though.

As far as good series that have gone downhill, I'll have to say Megaman (as others have) and Contra. They've tried to get Contra back to the old school goodness as of late, but I wish they would have killed the series in the 90s after the great NES/SNES entries and before the shitfest that was a Contra game on the PS1.

These may be unpopular choices, but this is my personal opinion.

Final Fantasy - the last good one they made was IX... since then it's been so watered down and crapterised (tm) that it's become merely a parody of it's former self. It also suffers from Metal Gear Syndrome (see below).

Metal Gear Solid - MGS1 was superb... then MGS 2 (and to a lesser extent MGS3) fell flat on it's face. Let's face it, the MGS series aren't playable games, they're interactive movies with about as much interactivity as Night Trap on the Mega CD had. If I wanted a movie, I'd pay £10 for one on DVD, not £50 on one that's disguised as a game. And to think, Kojima canned Snatcher 2 to release this crap.

Pokemon - this should Fuck off and die already... it should have been a fad, but for some reason it's stuck with us like herpes.

Tomb Raider - Should have died after TR2 if you ask me, and while TRL was a slight nudge back to form, it's just simply not enough to keep the franchise running.

Tekken - the demented mongoloid incestuous cousin of the beat em up family. It was NEVER anything more than a shallow worthless pathetic button masher, and should have NEVER got to T2, let alone Tekken 6! Why people buy this garbage simply boggles my mind.... it's worse than Toshinden for christ's sake!

Soul Calibur - Tekken with swords and prettier graphics. Crap Crap Crap.

Fifa Soccer - Ugh! hasn't been any good since the original Genesis version... time to put this old 3 legged dog to rest.

Sonic The Hedgehog - Every new game that gets released drags Sonic's name into the gutter that little bit more. I think it's time to respectfully lay our blue buddy to rest now before any more damage is done.

Driver - it's always been total bollocks, ever since the first game. The best bit was in the garage pulling off the moves... once you step outside you see the graphics turn into horseshit along with a framerate that a C-64 would be ashamed of. Didn't exactly light my fire from the beginning.. and it's turn to complete and utter waste of CD media ever since.

I can probably think of more, but those are the ones that spring to mind straight away.

- Crash Bandicoot:
Damn...They need to lay this zombie to rest! It's been 10 years and I have yet to play a single Crash game I liked!

- Spyro:
The first was ok, but it got stale quickly.

- Non-Mario Sports Games (Excluding Mario Superstar Baseball and Super Mario Strikers):
...Remind me why they still make them

- Army Men:
...They still make them?

- Sonic the Hedgehog:
I loved the Genesis games, "Sonic Adventure", and the first GBA game, but everything after those suck. They really need to stop making Sonic games, as STH went down the crapper after SA2:B came out for Gamecube.

- Grand Theft Auto:

Though it might be thought of as heresy by many, Id say Devil May Cry. Yes, its a young series. But the original vision of the series was lost when the director of DMC1 quit, and the simply awful DMC2 was released. Then DMC3 came out, which completely ruined the timeline. The noir-ish feel was totally lost IMO with DMC3 as well.

The Army Men and the GTA ripoffs like Driver, Getaway and True Crime. Runners up being Madden, Spyro and those other "cute mascot in a 3d adventure" types after the 1st sequel.

Soul Calibur - Tekken with swords and prettier graphics. Crap Crap Crap.
If you know the game button mashing isn't an option. People who are well into the control and flow of characters can take out any button masher easily. I've seen some pretty scary people playing in this game.

I agree with most FPS's.. but some are a helluva lotta fun. FEAR was a great game, and I can't wait for Prey or STALKER. I'd say the same for Duke Nukem Forever.. but aside from being tired, it can wait a bit longer. I'm not that hungry.

A series that they should bring back would be more 2d Worms games. I never played Worms 3d.. and I don't really plan on it unless anybody has something good to say about it. Either way, if they continue to go in the 3d line with the worms games, that is a series that can just end.

And for the love of God stop the Star Wars games unless they do something really interesting and different with the universe. Pleeeeaasseeee

Someone mentioned DBZ, the games on the Super Famicon are actually pretty good. Only NEW DBZ game thats good is Budokai 3 cuz I can hear then in Japanese and not the whole english bullcrap. Worst series, in my opinion, is the Megaman NT series.

PS - Leisure Suit Larry r0xz! New game is not as great as the old ones.

Ackman, i'm surprised you dislike the SH series so much.

anyhow:

Survival-Horror is my favorite genre, beat 'em ups taking second place (until they can get steady releases again). i don't understand how anyone could dislike a genre with so much potential.

as for Resident Evil, i prefer the older "carbon-copy" games as opposed to RE4. they could have kept making games in the vein of 1,2, 3, CV (and Outbreak) and i would have been a loyal customer. i just hope Capcom re-inserts the "survival" elements into RE5 and not make another action game with the RE name on it.

Grand Theft Auto

I"ll second/third/fourth/whatever.. the GTA vote as well.

The OP mentioned NO SPORTS games and it has to be a series on at least 2 generations, so whoever said Devil May Cry, it doesn't count since DMC has only been on PS2. There will most likely be another one on the PS3 I believe which has yet to prove itself. Anyhow,

I personally like the LSL games. The only falter was when it switched to actually being on a console. The older PC version are funny and have a cult following.

Some others series that I vote to subdue include:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
James Bond (007)
Tom & Jerry
Harry Potter
Army Men
Driver
