I decided to buy this game. I have heard it is a decent game and I jumped on the opportunity to get it once I know it got a 5 on the digitpress guide.
The game seems like a lot of fun. I have heard of it being described as a full blown RPG combined with a dating simulator. I think if they pulled it off right that would be a lot of fun.
So has anyone here played it? I payed 35 bucks for a complete copy, is that a good deal?

I only played a bit, but what I did play was rather meh.
The dating sim part was fun, but the battles were really odd and just didn't work for me.
But like I said, I only played a bit (few hours tops).

I've been trying to find a complete Thousand Arms for ages but every copy I come across is always missing the hologram card and/or memory card stickers.
Never played it before but it looks good though. Especially that dating sim part.

Well when I say complete I doubt it has that with it. The guy did say it was complete with case and instuctions but he said onthing off a memory card.

Yeah, it's supposed to come with a little sheet of memory card stickers and a holographic trading card thingy. It's not a big deal but being the completest that I am, I personally can't live without it.

I wonder why there are memory card stickers. Do you mean stickers of memory cards on stickers to go on memory cards. I am guessing to go on because the other would really make no sense.

I finished it in a weekend. The only good part was the dating sim thing, and that got old real fast. Story is bland, and the combat is among the worst I've ever seen. If you're *really* intrigued, then check it out, but if you're just kinda half-heartedly looking for something to play, there's much much better out there.

Yeah, they are just decorative little stickers that go on the memory card. Guess so it's easy to identify which card your Thousand Arms game saves are on in case you have a bunch of PS1 memory cards.
A few early PS1 games came with memory card stickers, mainly RPG's. Raiden Project came with a set though.

I've been looking for 1 of those for so long. I've only ever seen 1 for sale here, NZ, and it was morbidly expensive.
PAL regions get all the luck, huh?

I have I V-Mem and don't have to worry about a bunch of cards. I just have to worry about remembering/recording whats on the v-cards.
I'm intrigued. I might have to find me a copy.

Yay, any RPG takes a while to get into, the first couple of hours are a lot of introductions and back story. If you base FF7 on the first couple of hours, you might think "meh" too.[/list]

What was the battle system like? Everyone is saying it is pretty bad and I am really wondering about it. What is so bad about it?

It was more the battle system that turned me off. But I was really just giving it a quick whirl. And no worries, I don't base anything off of FF7 ;)
Anyways, if anyone would like to see what the stickers and holocard look like, I uploaded them to RFGen a few months ago. Click me! (http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/getinfo.pl?ID=U-061-S-12170-A&)

Yeah it's not until you beat the game that you can truely appreciate how much it sucked.

I've played all sorts of RPGs- Xenogears, Star Ocean, Vandal Hearts, Legend of Legia, Breath of Fire 4, FF7, FF8, FF9, FFT, Front Mission 3 and Mario RPG. Mario RPG, FFT, and FF7 are really the only ones that I would want to play again, although I really got into Xenogears, Star Ocean, and Front Mission 3. But there is something for everyone out there. What RPGs do you like playing?

IIRC, it was incredibly monotanous, even more so that standard RPG fare. Only one character can attack at a time (same for the enemies), and the other chars could only do support stuff. I have a personal beef about not being able to use all your characters at once (ie, you have a party of 7 in FFX but can only use 3 at a time), but just having one effective fighter was ridiculous.

It seems as though you like more lighthearted/ upbeat games. The FF games, Xenogears have dark overtones. So that maybe another reason why you don't like them.

I don’t really think that’s the case. For starters I did like Xenogears, but I wouldn’t consider it a favorite. Besides I do enjoy some very dark RPGs such as “Persona 2”, part of the “Megami Tensei” series which borrows demons and themes from the writings of H.P. Lovecraft and infuses them with the darker side of Christian mythology. I also like “Koudelka” which is an RPG that very much plays like a survival horror game with random encounters, and “Sweet Home” which was a famicom license of an old Japanese horror film.
No I like dark games, in fact one of my favorite genres is survival horror. I certainly don’t dislike Final Fantasy 7 because I found the game to be “too dark”. No I dislike the game because the story was pretentious, the localization was poorly written, and after completing the game I discovered I had no found attachments to any of the game’s shallow two dimensional characters. I also dislike the Final Fantasy series in general because of it’s annoying emphasis on power leveling, inclusion of secrets impossible to discover without the use of a guide book, and it’s continued descent from RPG to non-interactive FMV.
I, too, would like to gather opinions on Thousand Arms. I have been thinking of buying a copy from all the way back when it was first released. However what I've found of it on YouTube was mainly guys talking over the game (or to the game!) so I can't really get a solid feeling for Thousand Arms and its pacing.
Of what is a complete copy composed? Is it two discs, the case, a manual, a hologram card, a multimedia CD, and a set of four Memory Card stickers?

yes it is, just 2 discs ... I have it in all its glory :band:

The multimedia CD was something you needed to mail in for, a complete copy of the game would not include that.

I was under the impression that there were two pressings of this game: one with the multimedia CD included and one which had a send-away offer for it.

It's possible, but the only copies I've ever seen all had the the little red starburst text on the main cover like here.
http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/getinfo.pl?ID=U-061-S-12170-A&type=bf
Which talks about how you need to mail in for the bonus CD. They even say upfront there will be postage costs.
I'm not discounting the fact that it might exist, but if it's a variant I'd think it would have been located and be on Game Rave already. Also, there's no citation for the text which exists on Wikipedia saying there was another release, so I'd take it with a grain of salt.
I do have a complete copy of the game with the holofoil/stickers, the hint guide, the multimedia cd, and the demo cd; and the last two promo disc are in separate sleeves.
According to Dangerboy:
Not that I'm aware of. Just the one black label with the extra stuff (memory card stickers, etc).
So yeah, I'd think that there was ever only one North American release. Or in other words, the Thousand Arms Wikipedia article requires a [citation needed]. ;)

I remember seeing 1 copy that did not have the bonus offer stamp on it, I don't know whether or not it was real or if it was a promo or knockoff case of some type.
BTW A complete copy should have 2 CDs in a double case. It should have 1 lenticular trading card and 4 memory card stickers on 1 sheet. The manual should have a bound registration card and a bound bonus offer card. If you want it complete look for one that DID NOT have the offer redeemed.
This game is definitely good, the battle system is a bit odd though. The battle system only allows for 1 physical attacker, the back row can only use magic and items and even then is a bit restricted. If a character dies he/she is placed at the back of the back row, after being revived. That can make boss fights rather hard. You also have to choose a attack or spell, wait for it to charge and THEN activate it. One warning though, the final boss is more a war of attrition than anything else, the first 2 rounds are easy the 3rd is annoying but the 4th usually gets you, you'll spend about 5 minutes knocking off the first 18000 HP (if you saved ALL of your summons, he has about 20K HP) for the next hour you'll be losing 2-4 turns to his unblockable crystal traps, trying not to lose ground has he heals himself for several hundred sometimes for several turns in a row.
The dating sim aspect can be a bit of a pain, you need to do this to gain magic but you can easily miss some spells, if you forge at level 7 you WILL not get level 1-6 spells unless you already got them. To get missed spells you have to piss of the girls.
The game is one of my favorites but if you haven't played too many RPGs before don't even bother because it is one of the least forgiving. There is only 1-2 save points on the entire second disc and no way to backtrack out of the final dungeon, thus no way to recharge your summons or buy items there is also a boss right before the final dungeon.
