View Full Version : How often do you find yourself bidding against fellow DPers?

As I was looking through a few newly listed auctions on ebay, I saw that a few DPers had already made an "opening bid" on a few items, and I was wondering how often do you guys find yourself bidding against fellow DPers? do you not bid out of respect for the other DPers? do you declare open war on them and hold a grudge if they beat you out?
Sometimes If it's someone I know who is very close to completing their collection, i'll let them have the auction, but other times if it's someone who is a notorious reseller, i'll bid to my heart's content.

Only eBay ID of a fellow dp member I know is Bronty (congragulations on the Stadium Events =) ).
If I knew more members and what they really wanted, then yes, I would not bid. If it was something that I really needed I would message them and ask if it would be possible to not bid, or tell them how much I was willing to go, at max. If they weren't going to go higher than that, i'd request that they don't bid and make me spend that much in that case. Things like that.
Once again though, I don't really know anybody on the boards, so if I do bid against somebody, =) Sorry.

dr curtis ended up beating me on the most recently ended Hot Slots auction a few weeks back.
I think that was the only time though, as I don't usually buy things on ebay.

Yeah, it happens every so often. Fortunately, usually I don't end up neck and neck against the other guy. If it was something I desperately wanted, I wouldn't hesitate trying to talk with the other guy about it.
So far I have been very lucky to not be up against buyatari or dreamtr yet. LOL

Buyatari sometimes.

It all depends as to what I'm going after. I've backed off things that some have gone after (Dangerboy, QotF and kevincure mostly) and lost out to other DPer's (BuyAtari).
If it's a big enough item i'll make mention of my intentions for it (especially if its mentioned here on the boards), but i'm normally of the persuasion that if someone else wants it and thinks they can win it out from under me, than they can try.

If I know someone is interested in an item, and needs it more than I do, and others pop up fairly regularly (like every couple of months) I'll let them have it. I didn't bid on the hot slots jumpman was going after cuz I still need around 230 nes games.

Rarely, actually. I normally just sell stuff to you guys. LOL
I'm not really into collecting, so I'm happy I don't have to fight against fellow DPers. ;)

Yeah, I'm sure I have. Do I care or use certain rules? Nah. I figure it all comes full circle; you win some, you lose some. I'm a reseller anyway, so if someone wants something more than me, I figure they'll pay a pretty price. I'm not after anything rare either, so it's usually just dime a dozen lots of systems/games that I'm pointing my bids towards.
If it was something rare? Hmmm, yeah, probably, because I'm apt to sell what collections I acquire anyways. I know some people are way serious about this sort of stuff, so I'd back off if they needed something.

I'm usually lucky enough that my psycho obsessiveness over PSX stuff has thankfully allowed me to have a better stab at something than others (I can't believe how many times Stu's let me have something...) but overall my ability to avoid other DP'ers has been okay, sans poor lockshaw and our demo wars ^^;;
Interestingly, lately I've been in bidding wars with the very sellers I'm buying from. The other day I was losing to cardsonline (a really great seller), and then we both ended up losing to someone else. If they win, I usually email them and ask to buy just the item I needed.
Other than that, thankfully my once active ebay stalker seems to have laid off for the better...

I always thought that most of you sniped at the last second. If that were the case then we'd never (knowingly) be bidding against each other.

Few times. I really don't know a whole lot of ebay ids of fellow collectors besides those over at NESWorld and a few here. If it's an item I really want then I'll go neck in neck with another bidder whether they are DP, nesworld, nesforums, or whatever. If it's an item I don't need but would still like, I'll just wait for another to pop up on ebay.

well there are a few that bid before sniping, and when the auction is over, you can always check who you got sniped by...Oobgarm sniped me once i think.

I've run across several DP regulars in ebay auctions. Kind of hard to avoid, I guess.

I do and don't. It really depends on the item.
When I was going after the 10 Million PlayStation that BuyAtari outbid me on, I had numerous bids placed on it and lost out to a 1 second snipe.
Other things i've just dropped down a high bid and held the auction (my old eBay mantra, which has held out surprisingly well over the years for general items) and in some cases when its come to auctions that a fellow DP'r has put up, or a fellow DP'r might want and I don't want to draw undue notice to it, i'll set a snipe and walk away.

Since I don't know the names, I can't tell, heh.
Anyway, my belief in eBay is... all's fair. I don't mind getting outbidded by a fellow DP member, whoever is willing to pay more is the name of the game.

In some cases it's really easy to tell. Like myself. My eBay nickname is the same nickname I use all over. :)

On occasion. goatdan and I were going after Sonic Adv LE around the same time, so we coordinated so as to not bid against each other though. It's rare, but it pops up now and again, so it was no biggie for one of us (me) to wait and not run up the price on each other.

Mr. DP himself has outsniped me in at least 5 auctions alone this past year. It happens. I've bought and sold stuff to DP members as well as outbidding and being outbid by them.

I try not to go up against other people.
I'm junglejuncture, but I try not to bid on anything until the final seconds so it can get hairy. Still, I'll always back off of something (unless it was like a holy grail to me, but there aren't a lot of things on eBay I go after that can't be found elsewhere or that seem to attract DPer attention, being an import fan and all).

I outbid Anagrama on ebay.com.au last year on a copy of Fatal Fury 2 for Megadrive :P
I was unaware i did till the next morning though, the auction finished at 2am, so i put in a high max bid and went to bed...
And anagrama bidded during my sleep time :P

I believe Joe outbid me once, too, though that was a year or more ago, I think. I did find myself bidding against Zach Meston in one auction and I went ahead and continued to bid on it as it was something I really wanted and I did win it. Luckily, the final price wasn't that high. Those may be about the only times this has happened and I doubt it ever will again as I really don't buy on Ebay anymore.
