View Full Version : When they going 2 bring back the old Point & Click

All the graphic adventure games that use to have the old style of "point & click" are becoming 3D like Leisure Suit Larry and Monkey Island. In my opinion, I prefer the old versions over the new ones. For some reason, they are more funner, which is kinda weird cuz you'd expect a 3D game to be more funner than a 2D game. Like there was a rumor that Full Throttle is gonna be 3D as well as Sam & Max.
jajaja

Both Sam & Max 2 and Full Throttle 2 were canceled a long time ago, thank god for that hehe. Pulling these games to 3d is a big mistake. I did enjoy Monkey Island 4 alot tho, even if it is in 3d :)
I also miss the good old 2d point-n-click adventure games :( Before there were alot of them, now its hardly any. There is a new adventure game comming soon, called Runaway 2 (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/adventure/runaway2/index.html?q=runaway%202). I played through Runaway 1 and it was a great game. Looking forward to checking out the sequel :)

Hmm, I can't believe I missed that game. LOL I got almost every single 2D point & click game. The most recent one I got was Tony Tough and the Night of the Roasted Moths (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/adventure/tonytoughandthenorm/index.html) and that game was released '02. LoL

Well, maybe someone will dig up the Sega CD versions of the Indiana Jones games and Myst from Lucasart's Dungeons and give them a release.
I'd certainly buy them.

Actually, Telltale Games acquired the Sam & Max license, and are working on a new game starring the duo. The website is here: http://www.telltalegames.com/samandmax/
It is in 3D, and a little creepy looking, but Steve Purcell is working on it, so I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

They were supposed to make a new Space Quest game years ago but that got cancelled too. The space quest games used to be my favorite point and click games. The last one the made in particular. The Neverhood for the PC is pretty good too, I heard that game is hard to find now, is that true?

I think the closest "point and clicks" in the console world lately would be the Syberia series on the Xbox. I can't vouch for the gameplay but the graphics sure look pretty.
Also, The Longest Journey was the last great point and click that I heard about coming out for the PC. I understand that its sequel came out recently (Dreamfall? or something like that) and I heard that it wasn't very good. :(

Dreamfall is a great game for its story and atmosphere. Longest Journey fans might be disappointed at its lack of puzzles though.

Yeah, a lot of the old point & click games are hard to find. Amazon.com probably got a bunch most likely so I'm gonna buy some on there.
I know a couple of fans started on a sequel for Zak McKracken & The Alien Mindbenders but idk what's the progress on that. Recently, I've been playing the Monkey Island series. Once I beat Curse of Monkey Island, I'm gonna play Leisure Suit Larry. :D

I'm glad they got the story and atmosphere right, that's 80% of it for me. I'm sure I'll play it. Eventually.

I remember enjoying Kings Quest 5 quite a bit, despite the piss poor organization of the menus..
And no, not the mind numbingly horrid NES port :/
Sam and Max was probably the best one Ive played along with the Monkey Island games.

I actually like the earlier point and click adventures--the one's with no pointing and clicking. I like using the arrow keys to control your character and typing in commands by hand. My favorite it is the original EGA Lesiure Suit Larry.

Well there were two projects and only one of them was complete from what I know. I played it for about 15 minutes until I got stuck and then gave up. It was a nice little game tho and shouldn't be hard to find with the use of google.
Altho it might not be a point and click game, D was a nice 3D adventure game, I remmeber having to call a tip hotline for that back when I didn't have the internet.

Yeah the typing adventure games are fun cuz they make you think more. Luckily Leisure Suit Larry Collector Series (http://www.mobygames.com/game/leisure-suit-larry-collection-series) has both EGA and VGA version of Leisure Suit Larry: In the Land of the Lounge Lizards. The 1st Leisure Suit Larry game I played was Leisure Suit Larry 5: Passionate Patti Does a Little Undercover Work (http://www.mobygames.com/game/leisure-suit-larry-5-passionate-patti-does-a-little-undercover-w) on the Macintosh (which is WAY better than the DOS version in my opinion)....when I was 9, 10 or 11 LOL . By the way, that's one cool lego version of Leisure Suit Larry. How long it took you to make it?

Point & click adventures were probably the first games I really got into, I loved the Monkey Island series & Leisure Suit Larry ones too!
I just got Sam & Max & Zak McKracken & the Alien Mindbenders for £0.70 each so think I'll have to play thru them.
I wish they would start releasing new 2d ones too, not go all 3d on us!

Story and Atmosphere were nice, but the fighting and stealth were awful and the puzzles were too basic, it turned me off playing :/

I didn't think that VGA remake of KQ3 would ever be finished! I looked at the site maybe a year ago, whoa I'm downloading it right now!
Now waiting for Quest for Glory 2 vga won't be so bad. http://agdinteractive.com/
Dreamfall is an excellent game, I'm almost all the way through it I think. The combat is a little simplistic, and maybe should have been left out all together, but the story is amazing!

Man...I'm trying to play the VGA version of Leisure Suit Larry 1 and its a bit laggy with DosBox and with VDMSound, the mouse is a bit laggy in response sometimes. I did what they told me to do with LSL 1 on Dosbox but when I'm at the Casino, the game STILL lags a bit. I noticed someone else experienced this same problem when I was reading the game replies under the "Games" tab at DosBox's official site. I know the game isnt that slow because when I played the game normally thru Windows XP (without sound ), the game ran in its speed. I remember it being that fast on my old computer too, which sadly I can't play on because we are missing parts for it. :/
NickmasterX
06-24-2006, 07:24 PM
Well, I'm sure there's a way to fix it in dosbox, but if you said it runs fine in XP you should download VDMS sound: http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound/
Now it will work with sound.

For the love of god and everything that is holy, if you enjoy classic adventures then you need to play 5 Days a Stranger (http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/5days), 7 Days a Skeptic (http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/7days), and Trilby's Notes (http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/notes).
The series starts with 5 Days, which won a bunch of awards because it kicks ass. Trilby's Notes takes place 4 years later and is the immediate sequel (and was just released today!). Totally bucking the trend, the game uses a parser interface to great effect. 7 Days takes place 400 years after 5 Days (and has a mouse interface). The writing is totally top notch despite the amatuer graphics, but pretty much everything was done by just one guy. One guy!
Seriously, great games. Great free games.
I'm biased, though :(

Aye, the genre is alive and well with these freeware AGS games.
There's lots of cool stuff out there that I haven't played yet: Out of Order, Night of the Razors, No Action Jackson, Ozzie and the Quantum Playwright, The Adventures of Fatman, Garfield: Attack of the Mutant Lasagna, and of course the aforementioned 5 Days a Stranger and 7 Days a Skeptic. The list goes on and on.

I noticed that a lot of these old school graphic adventure games are REALLY expensive. I tried to buy a copy of Day of the Tentacle (new) on amazon.com and the game is $100+. Heck all the new ones are over $100. :o

I always loved the Quest for Glory games and was bummed when Sierra never released the expansion to QfG V they announced. The 4th one was always my favorite in spite of all the stupid bugs. It had excellent voice acting, a great story, and was much darker than the other games. Some people have been working on a VGA remake of the 2nd one, which I cannot wait for. It's in beta testing at the moment. You can find out about it here and download the remakes of King's Quest 1 & 2 here:

If you're looking for old style 2D point and clickers, there are a lot of people who make homebrews/remakes using AGS (Adventure Game Studio).

Since this thread was originally started, a lot of new games in the genre have come out.
I haven't played any of the new Sam & Max games yet, so I hope I can get some opinions on that.
For my DS, I have Trace Memory, Hotel Dusk, both Phoenix Wright games, and Touch Detective. All of them give me a good fill.
I'll also tentatively recommend Still-Life for PC. It has an absolutely fantastic story and atmosphere, and most of the game was very enjoyable. Some of the puzzles are quite frustrating though. You might want to refer to GameFAQs if you get stuck. Also, the ending leaves some loose ends, which I didn't like, but it's out there.

Recently, I was checking up on adventuregamers.com and came across a game called Resonance. It seems pretty cool and the controls for the game is point & click. This is really cool imo because it answers the question I put as the title.

I played a few Police Quests, Space and king quests back in the day. For some reason Gold Rush is the one that I remember the most.
Point and clicks are ok... but what I want to know is when they will bring back space shooters like Tie Fighter and Wing Commander. Those are the ones I miss most.

I really enjoyed "point & clicks" back in the day, although the name is something of an anachronism for some of them - King's Quest I-III and a lot of those early ones were controlled with a joystick or keyboard. I don't really enjoy them any more, though, and don't have a real desire to go back and play them. The real reason is, I think, that those games are very restrictive in the solutions that they allow people to come up with for the various "problems" the game presents. These solutions invariably try to get the player to "think like the designer" - sometimes in some very bizarre and non-intuitive ways. The classic example is the "NIKSTLITSELPMUR" puzzle from KQ1 - who's going to figure out that you have to spell RUMPLESTILTSKIN with a backwards alphabet, really?
I much prefer games nowadays that give me a set of tools and many different solutions to a problem and allow me to utilize some amount of creativity in discovering the solution - as opposed to just banging my head against a wall until I find the one particular brick that happens to have a crack in it.

Remember the Sierra Hint Line? It was this phone number you could call that charged by-the-minute that gave solutions to those difficult puzzles.
Of course it's all gone now, but I can't help but wonder if the developers were encouraged to make puzzles just a little bit more obscure for this reason.
