I bought a greatest hits copy of San Andreas for the PS2 yesterday and I have a memory card file that was used in the first version of SA and it doesn't seem to want to load with the greatest hits version. Is there any way to fix this without having to find an old copy (BTW, are these things hard to come by at places like gamestop, etc.). Thanks.

The greatest hits version is most definitely version 2.0.
I'll bet that Rockstar's lawyers demanded they must eliminate any possibility of innocent eyes from seeing anything related to the evil version 1.0 and blocked old saves from working on version 2.0.

You are most likely S.O.L. I never really thought about this occuring but it makes perfect sense. Everytime I see the old version it's always got a rather high price.

Yep, its like that in some games. If the savegames are from another version they wont work on a newer version. I remember this from Medal of Honor for PC. After applying the update patch all the old savegames got deleted (you got a warning when you updated tho).
I'm afraid you need the infamous hot coffee version, which isn't that hard to find on e-bay

dude that sucks , good thing i have the xbox version.
As long as it's not the "Greatest Hits" or "Special" edition, then it should be the HC version. You can also do the barcode check, if the last 4 digets are 7410, then it's the original release.

Thats lame. R* should have seen that coming and made a fix for save files of the original version. They made it work easy enough for MC3 Remix.

If it has a M or A rating on the box is a good indicator too, especially a used copy.

That's the first I've ever heard of something like this happening. I suppose I can understand it a little (it would help fight piracy somewhat), but I still don't like it. Then again, the odds of me having to repurchase another copy of SA because my original doesn't *is* pretty small.
