Wow i was suprised. Good music, good gameplay, not just your run-of-the-mill FPS like Quake 4.
360 demo should be coming out next week.
I did a blog post on my first impressions (http://www.njiska.com/mt/2006/06/prey_demo_first_impressions.html#more)

I'm still holding out some hope that the 360 demo arrives tomorrow... probably not going to happen, I guess.
I'm looking to put both demos through their paces, and really see how the 360 stands up to the task.

Nothing like hearing Don't Fear The Reaper while being abducted by aliens... Seemed fitting.

Not bad. Quite like the look of it. Enjoyed the opening introduction quite a bit. It is the first FPS I've ever played that stops the conversation with the NPC if you walk away (they even call you back). Nice touch.
I'm sure this will be quite a fun game, but it doesn't bring anything new to the table from what I've seen.

I beg to differ. Gravity Walks and Portals add a lot to the gameplay and experience.

I feel sorry enough for anybody trying to grab it off Fileplanet...there's far better download choices out there. Actually, torrents are moving it right along faster than the conventional download method, so if you've got a good enough connection that's the way to go.
Anyway, I played it last night. From my first autosave to the last was from 8:42 to 9:52. Last puzzle was very easy, but it seemed to cause trouble for some folks. Great demo, except for the stabby stabby bit ;O

For better options than just FilePlanet (Which I really don't like) then try this:
http://www.3drealms.com/prey/download.html
Also (like Ed Oscuro said) torrents will work great.
I'm downloading now and will check it out. Was pleased with the footage seen at E3.
This one's pretty fast:

I enjoyed the 360 demo more than I did the PC demo.
I actually liked the 360's controls, better than I did the PC's for some reason.
My one and only complaint with the game is with whoever does the voice for the main character. A few more acting lessons are in order. :)

I've only tried the single player. It seems that often times games have issues with their multiplayer modes. That's too bad. The single player is pretty damn good though, at least what I've seen of it so far. Sure, it's just another FPS, but it looks to be an enjoyable FPS romp.
I can tell you that I'm going to be sending two of my games back and putting this and NCAA Football at the top of my queue. Those will be two nice releases to check out.

1 player: based on demo it started out awsome, I thought it looked great and all, but then once u got inside the ship it just felt like every other FPS, and reminded me alot of quake 4. Online is your standard unreal.quake afair, but the more I played it today the more fun I had w/ it all, especialy the spirit walking and all.

i definately thought the demo was pretty sweet but I'm starting stay away from the FPS games for a while because each one just seems to be the same game but different guns, gimmicks, and story line. I may just wait till Halo 3 to play/purchase another FPS. I did like quake 4 though, I don't know why, I just thought it wasn't that bad.

What a shitty Disc holder. In the LE edition of Prey (which is worth it for the pewter figures) the disc is held on with a rubber circle. Directly behind the disc is the metal box.

that is a funny statement as Halo is as generic as its comes
in single player, take away guns, storyline and gimmicks then
there is nothing much to a FPS let alone Halo or its shitty second
game.

I had a customer complain that the LE didn't have a game in it. I told him to calm down and open the back lid. I then gave him detailed instructions where the back lid was. Then he started to yell at me for hiding the game and not telling him about that when he bought it.
Also, I'm borrowing a 360 copy since Chromehoundss is a day away from our store :(

Sadly my first multiplayer experience with the retail game was as bad, if not worse, than the demo. Njiska hosted, we started with 3, but it rose to 6, and then people, myself included, got disconnected. Njiska said some more than once.
Granted, the next couple MP games, each with 4 or less people, worked fine. But it supports more than 4, and first impressions are important.

Were other people just stuttering around or was it smooth? I've done a few deathmatches and they were all real jerky, like teleporting short distances forward instead of walking around.

I completed the single player on PC in anbout 6 hours, but I loved it, so many "that's so cool" moments, I couldn't pick a top 10!
I especially like the moments that where you see something lifted from earth in the sphere, sliding down the tiles of a bathroom and then landing in some alien tentacles is very cool.

That, my fried, is an understatement.
Pete wanted my opinion on the MP, well I have played it enough to form an opinion.
Anything over 5 players has serious issues. Anything with 4-5 players seems just fine, with minimal jittering, jumping, or frame rate issues.
I played a number of 8 player matches, many multiple times. Only one 8 player match was playable, with minimal jittering and jumping. But most times the jumping was so bad there was no way to snipe anyone, let alone target even with the acid gun.
At the worst, the frame rate bottomed out and it felt more like a still frame slide show, 10 fps or so. Trying to walk through a corridor continually for a minute on end while jittering about is no fun either. There was also shooting someone 10 times yet missing them every_single_time even though it looks like you should have killed them. Frustrating.
I read on the 3DRealms forum that Venum is working on a patch. That is a very good thing. This game needs it, pronto.
Outside of actually playing MP, I had a lot of connection errors trying to get into matches, but this was mainly trying to use "Quick Match." I have since stopped trying to use that, and just search for DM.
The MP in Prey is no where near as frustrating as CoD2 before its patch, but it is not good.
When the MP works, it shines. It is the most fun FPS I have had on the 360. CoD2 is a standout, but the mechanics of Prey present great game play in MP.
Sticking to 4-5 players seems to be good, but it is always more fun with 8. Considering that I was in a 8 player match with minimal problems to speak of, the rest of my 8 player experience being total shit, I am left baffled at the cause of the problems. I am not sure if it is the host or the game. But I am sure it must be an evil combination of the two.
The good news is that the developer knows about the problems and is actively working on a patch.
Until then I will play 4 player MP and enjoy the superbly executed single player.

Prey is a great game! I already beaten it on normal difficulty :) Too bad you cant choose the hardest difficulty at once, you have to unlock it. Brag brag, i know hehe, but i usualy always play FPS games on the hardest difficulty.
The atmosphere in this game is great! It really feels like your in an alien spaceship, atleast for me. Really sweet gfx, nice sound and cool weapons. The begining is also creepy, with the torture stuff etc. I recommend everyone to check this game out!

Indeed. I would like to hear about the MP on Windows. How many players max, is it restricted to 8? Is it as bad in MP as it is on the 360?
good story, maybe they'll patch it soon for the MP? Reminds me of Quake 4... good story, crappy MP, and thats really hardcore considering its a QUAKE game!

that would make sense, its a 2k game, and their sports titles have been ridled with problems like that, freezing, does it freeze to where you can only power down the system, and by that I mean, the controller silver x, can't bring up the "dashboard" menu. if so , this is vintage 2k.

Yes! Prey has frozen 4 times in the 3 hours I've played. That includes twice in single player and twice in multiplayer. The last time it screwed up my 360 so bad that I had to unplug everything from the console and wait for a minute, plug everything back in and it still glitched for awhile on the dashboard. The last time it froze in multiplayer, it screwed up my cable modem for 2 hours before the modem could reset my IP address. Scary. I'm kind of nervous to put the disc back in.
I played BF2MC for 2 hours right after this and it played perfectly. Something about Prey and my 360 just doesn't jive.

I also had random freezes on the PC version. I had to click alt+ctrl+del to get the task manager up. Then the game contunied to play, but alot of textures was missing so i had to reboot the game every time it happend. Didnt take very long tho, but annoying when it happend. Not a big problem for the PC version, but i guess it takes longer time to reboot the xbox 360.

I played through the 360 version without it ever freezing up. The multiplayer is very fudged, but it has some potential if it's ever fixed.
I enjoyed the single player greatly (and it did sound like Art Bell, I'd guess it was really him). I thought it could have used some better health or amor power-ups, sometimes I died too ewasily and I thought there was too small a punishment for being killed. You just respawn exactly where you left off.
Story was good; the jukebox sounded like Grand Theft Auto, the game machines could have been cooler...if they only could have integrated XBOX Live Arcade games.
The achievements did not feel earned...is there an achievement for beating the game on the tougher difficulty?
The rubix cube like device drove me crazy but othewrwise just a darn good game.
Hopefully we'll get additional downloadabale content that continues from the end of the game...or will it be a sequel?

Oh - that was great! That's where I thought the story was gonna take a huge turn. But it worked out (literally) in the end... I guess. But it did lead to tons of questions, though. Namely the encounter before you enter the very last portal in the game... That's all i'm saying. No spoiling!
And that certian boss whoops your ass, too. I ran out of power refills about 2 minutes into the fight.

I'm a little on the fence about this, to be honest. I mean, it renders quicksave redundant... and when you consider that this is a very linear and, dare I say it, easy game anyway, then the quicksave feature was already pretty useless.
I picked up Prey on Saturday (on PC), and I'm about a third of the way through. I'm really, really enjoying it thus far. It is easily the best use of the Doom 3 engine to-date. The weapons, in particular, look unreal, and they're a real joy to use.
The game actually reminds me of AvP a little: Spirit Walk, complete with bow, reminds me of a predator. Wall Walking (which I love!) reminds me of an alien. And the rest of the time, you feel like a marine (or sorts).
I can't get the multiplayer to work, though. It just doesn't show up any servers in the list, which I'm guessing is because I opted not to install Punkbuster. most games still show the servers that you can't join, though, so perhaps something else is to blame.
Is it worth trying to get the multiplayer to work, guys?
Edit: I'm about halfway through, now. The scale of some of the areas you visit are very impressive. One part I've played through tonight reminds me of Independence Day. All I needed was the cigar!
I also realised tonight that the death mini-game has a little more purpose than first thought. The red flying things (dragons? eagles?) represent health, and the blue flying things (elephants?) are Spirit.
But I bet you all knew that, right? :)

I thought the first appearance of the airplane was very cool...zooming through the ship...

Yeah stuff like that made the game BIG.
I just hope they can keep those little touches coming, for the downloads and sequel's and such.
*protip* as with all games... wait for the credits to end.

Whoa. Just... well... whoa! I thought I had, like, an hour or so left to play through tonight... but I took a three hour ride to Hell, and... erm... I guess I'm back. Whoa.
The use of colour was just amazing. The skies were stunning! The ending was just a rollercoaster! Even the credits were great!
I've played quite a few great games this year, but I'm putting Prey right up there.
It was worth the wait.

Great game so far, I'm playing through it on Xbox 360 and it hasn't froze yet.

Damn, Cherokee Mode is hard!
I've gone through the first 3 stages without seeing a single health refill. And the hunters have alot better aim, this time around.
Whoever said the death mini-game made quicksaving unnecessary obviously hasn't played this mode yet. You definitely need it here.
Too bad they didn't make this mode avalible from the get-go.

Thanks for the tip, nik. I probably would have done this anyway... if only to listen to the music! 3D Realms love a song during the credits. Max Payne 2 had a great one, too.

I don't know how you do it :) I couldn't play through Prey again so soon. It was such a draining, intense, one-off experience... that I really had just about enough by the end. I thought the length of the game was ideal for me.
I would have played through the harder mode, had it been available from the start.

While I was forever pressing F5 during the game (it is a habit I can't seem to break), I never once needed to reload the game.
So, I'm curious... why do you feel that quicksave is more important on the harder mode, diskoboy?

Weird, that harder mode was there right at the start on 360, wonder why not in PC?

That is strange. I had read in reviews, and on various forums (including this one, I think), that on both the PC and 360 versions, the harder mode was not available from the start.
When I tried to select the harder mode on the PC version, a message popped up telling me to complete it on normal first. Perhaps you didn't try to select it, hence you didn't see this message?

Funny, right after I made the post saying that it hadn't froze I beat a level (got the acheivment even) and it froze on the load time to the next level. So I had to redo it.

As I stated - throught the first 3 stages, there are absolutely no health refills, so far.
If you don't save a few times before you learn to spirit walk, you're in for a tough time.
I haven't played in a few days - I'm loving Cloning Clyde.

Must of been why then!
