I've been recently considering buying a copy of Valkyrie Profile off of ebay because i can't find it anywhere else. As everyone knows, this game goes for over $100 on ebay. I was just wondering if actually playing the game is anywhere close to what the game itself costs. Also does anybody think that the remake for the PSP is going to increase or decrease the value of the PS1 title. I want to see some people's input before i go dropping $100+ on this game.

The game it's self is excellent. So you needn't fear paying a lot of money for a crappy game. Valkyrie Profile is popular for a reason. As for a price drop, it's possible. I have a similar dilemia with Suikoden 2, and if I weren't completely broke at the moment I probably would have dropped the $100 just to be done with it.
I guess it really depends on why you want the game, if you really just to play it you could save yourslef some money by buying a disk only copy and picking up a complete later on, especially if it's rereleased.
Also on the off chance you didn't like the game you wouldn't feel as though you wasted $100. Then again if you do pay full price, and dislike the game you can easily turn it around and get your money back.

I am awaiting the PSP version (sometime in July I think). I am beting on the price falling eventually on ebay since this about the last PS1 rpg I need. The PSP version will have additional content as well...
Of course if you do not have a PSP I'd save the $100 for a PS (preowned even).

Get it. Absolutely. No Question.
It's a fantastic game, but whether you like it or not, you can always resell it and make your money back (or even a profit).
That's my philosophy of retro gaming. I'll spend a thousand bucks to buy a system I've never tried before and a bunch of recommended games, because I know that in a few months or a year I'll get the money back :) Much better than buying brand new games for $50 and then getting half that when you sell them a few months or a year later.

yeah, I'm thinking about waiting to see what the original PS 1 version is going to do on the market after the PSP version is released I think. I think the original is going to lose out on people trying to buy it once people are able to play it on a different system. I know the original will t still be rare, and a collectors item, but i don't think it will be as high in demand due to the fact that its going to be available to pretty everyone who owns a PSP.

If any game is worth $100+, it's Valkyrie Profile.
I don't know what effect the PSP version may have on the value of the PlayStation original, but I will tell you one thing - the PlayStation original is still the better version. I have both, and I still greatly prefer the original. The graphics in the PSP version are often blurry. To get the widescreen ratio, they would zoom in or out on a particular area. You'll notice that the size of Valkyrie is all over the place, sometimes small sometimes large, while in the PlayStation version her size is consistent. Also, the motion blur ghosting effect (AKA Game Gear syndrome) you get from the refresh rate of the PSP screen is REALLY bothersome occasionally. The music doesn't sound as nice (as expected), and the loading times are considerably longer. There's also the issue of the localization. I don't know if they'll be using the same script or voice acting as what's in the US PlayStation version (since the Enix of America branch that originally did the localization closed down long before the Square Enix merger), and even if they keep that stuff, I really can't imagine that they'll go back in and hack with the code like they did for the US PlayStation version. You see, they made some changes here and there, such altering scenes and make the menus easier and more convenient to navigate. While I usually like games to stay as close to their Japanese originals as possible, I have to say that most of the alterations and additions were actually improvements; however, the Japanese PSP release is based on the Japanese PlayStation release, so who knows what we'll get.
Yes, there is some additional content in the PSP release, but it's mostly just the widescreen ratio and some pretty new FMV. Unfortunately, the "additions" would be more accurately called replacements because a lot of old content was removed in order to not conflict with the new stuff. The old anime intro, which I thought was quite cool, is completely gone, as is much of the other old FMV (maybe all?). Other little scenes here and there have been cut too.
So unless you REALLY want that new FMV, there aren't many reasons to go with the PSP version over the PlayStation version. Having a portable version is nice, but not as nice as playing on a big TV with surround sound, especially when it by and large looks better and plays better than the PSP version too.

just to beat a dead horse:
buy it or else I'll beat you like a dead horse.
Damned good game, and I'm gearing up for a playthrough of it via pSX Emulator in the very near future (daddy needs some nice 1280x960 Valkyrie Profile wallpapers!). I got lucky and scored it from GameStop for like $40 or some such a few years ago (used/case/no manual) and I'm happy as hell I jumped on it when I did.
Shame that the PSP port didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped :(

Why am I the only one that couldn't get into this game? It wasn't bad, but I found the fighting a bit boring. For shame, as the graphics (minus the part where you're flying) are lovely.

You're not the only one; I've encountered quite a few people that couldn't get into it. It's unique enough of a game that it's bound to alienate some players. I guess you could call it a "love it or hate it" kind of game, even if it seems like most people love it these days (now if you were trying to find fans right after the game's release in the US, that's an entirely different story; its popularity has really been made by word of mouth over the years).

I turned down this game for around $30 because it wasn't MINT about 4 years ago and haven't seen it since.. :(

I finally found this game in a lot of games for pretty cheap. No case, but there is a manual. I couldn't wait to get this game. So far I've only been able to play for a few hours, but I'm loving it. My only complaint is with the voice-acting. It's pretty horrible at times. Very over-dramatic. It kind of seems like the actors were given the line, not knowing where it went or what the story was. So they just kind of read how they thought it should sound. There is also a long pause between some lines, which kind of ruins the continuity. In the end though, who cares, this game is great.

I picked up the PSP version on day 1 and to me, it is fantastic. Easily the best RPG on PSP. This is the only game I'm going to play until I am finished with it. I really don't see any need to spend the 100+ bucks on ebay for it but if I find it in the wild somehow, I will definately pick it up (depending on the price). This game kinda reminds me of a mix between Castlevania: SotN, Final Fantasy, and Star Ocean. One of the castle stages in Valkyrie actually looks like it would come out of a castlevania game. Thank you Square-Enix for making this great game affordable once again. Looking foward to Valkyrie Profile 2 now, I hope they keep it a sidescroller.

For me, the terrible voice acting is part of its charm! LOL

I got the PSP version when it came out a few weeks ago and I have no idea whats going on, it's a pretty game tho.
Hated it traded it. To complicated and the game does not tell you how some of the systems work, so your kind of going blind for the first few hours.

The PS VP is only worth 100 bucks if you are an rpg fanatic. I doubt anyone else would understand or like the game.
Then again, anything is only worth the 100 bucks if you think it's worth it. Therefore, the only way to know is by... well, paying 100 bucks to find out.

I bought this game in mint condition from eb games a LONG time ago. One of the first psx games I bought. I hate it so much. I've tried many times to restart it and try and see what everyone loves so much about it but I've failed every single time. I've gotten about 8 hours in which isn't really that much for an RPG, but I couldn't take any more. I don't know what it is, but it just doesn't mesh with me at all. Different strokes and what not. I don't think I'll ever sell it though seeing as how it would cost me 100+ to get it back and I only spent 25 on it from EB. I've NEVER come across it in the wild again.
I did like the fact that most of the main characters are murdered or commit suicide in the first hour or two.
Oh...yeah...spoilers and all that.

I've NEVER come across it in the wild again.
Last year when I managed an EB, I had one traded in... so of course I put it aside for myself :) Knowing I got a good deal tho, when I let it go I sold it on here for $80. Took about 2 minutes to get an offer hehe.

It is, it just has 3D graphics now (which in some ways is disappointing but it's expected and it's still very pretty).
I actually think the voice acting is pretty good compared to most RPG dubbing out there. At the very least, I think Valkyrie is done well the majority of the time, and since you hear her the most, that's very good. With anybody else, you can just choose to not use them if the voice is too bothersome. Anyway, you can only expect so much from the Pokemon voice cast. :P

I'm gonna be honest, DP. I downloaded this game.
If I had $100 to spare, I would drop it in a heartbeat. The game is just that good. Everything about it is good, especially if you're one of those RPG guys that loves to exploit things to their full potential.
Be sure to play on hard mode. It's not really hard, but that's how you get the goods. I have only seen one copy in my life, personally, ever.

People have been talking about seeing this in the wild... Its not as crazy as it sounds.
The irony is that I passed on this game in the wild because I usually don't check the plain jewl cases since it usually involves me pulling them off the shelves to look at the disk, or in the instance they have been gutted I have to read the labels. Because of this laziness, I passed on a copy in my local EB for MONTHS (and even the clerk whom told me about the copy had himself not realized he had a copy) untill it was too late the PS1 section of the EB was removed.

My name is Trenton Barnett A.K.A. Kankun... Pinche Kankun when I do dumb shit or when people are mad at me!! My opinion to this is this: If I have to pay $100 on Valkyrie Profile in order to get a copy and there is no other lower price, so be it!! However, right now, I am only looking for the Disc 1 of Valkyrie Profile 1!! I really am not trying to spend $100 on a game I only paid $45 for. But one more thing... Just don't spend more than that on that game please, like "$300!!"
BUT YES, THIS GAME IS HELLA GOOD... ONE REASON IS SIMPLY BECAUSE I LOVE WOMEN, AND THIS GAME PROMOTES THE POWERS AND CAPABILITIES OF WOMEN!!

I understand this game. AND I LOVE IT!! I just think that paying anymore than $100 for a playstation one game that the company doesn't even make anymore is a bit off the planet!!

I passed on VP and most of the other Atlus RPGs I don't own for years at a local gamestore. I could have picked up every PS1 Atlus game for under 30 dollars used in mint condition. For example, I could've picked up a complete Brigandine for 10 dollars. Back in those days "Atlus" on the front of the game didn't mean $$$, although it usually meant a good game to me personally. I also owned The Tales of Destiny Games at various times, bought for under 20 dollars at this store. Time sure does make fools of us all.

Yeah you're right >_<. I guess in my head every niche RPG for the PSX is "Atlus".

I'm glad I came by this thread. It reminded me to go get a copy. Just got one on ebay for 85 shipped.
Paying $80-100 for a playable game which originally retailed for $50 and is out of print by almost 10 years is a freaking steal.

Did the game have a low print run? I assume that's why it goes for so much.
After I finish it, I'm selling it. Reminds me of Suikoden 2 and Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. Bought them for forty dollars each on the same day at Wal-Mart. Now they go for insane prices.

I neither love nor hate this game.
I started it. The story seemed promising and intriguing. The battle system was really cool. Sure, things weren't explained, but then again, that's what Gamefaqs is for.
The problem is that even with Gamefaqs the game is a little dense - and it seems like you practically NEED gamefaqs to plan ahead to get one of the decent endings.
I really do dislike games that make you read an FAQ to get the "good" ending. IMO, if you understand the rules of the game and play well, you shouldn't have to go to an FAQ to figure out the exact step-by-step required to get "ending x" or "ending y." I don't have the time to play through a 40-hour RPG 2-3 times; if it's a 5-10 hour game, then that's one thing.

Just want to point out that if your goal is to experience the game, and not own it permanently, it doesn't matter if a game costs $200. Buy it, and resell it again once you are done. Odds are you will either get back all you spent or possibly even make some money. If you lost some money, well, then just consider it a rental.
Oh, and VP is amazing.

I like Valkyrie Profile!
It is a good game. I bought it back in 2002 for great price. Played through 2 times.
I use the strategy guide to get the good ending. I pay more for the guide($41) than the game :embarrassed:
Really good music and nice artwork! I am fan of Tri-ace they are do well games (still working on completion of Star Ocean: Second Story)
