I read on Planet Gamecube that Sega plans on porting over Sonic's first Genny game over to the GBA, with a couple of new features, namely the spin dash and the ability to save, at the budget price of $20. Anyone else hear about this? Kinda pointless, considering Sonic Mega Collection and the upcoming Virtual Console, but hey, I guess if it sells...

It's not any more pointless than the numerous other ports. Sometimes people just want to play a game they already have on the go.

Yep! I sure do want portable genesis sonic without carrying around my big nomad, so this is a plus. Now if Sonic 3 and Knuckles can get released on GBA..... 8-)

COOL! We need more Sonic games for the GBA! It would be great if they'd do like they did with DKC and release all of the 16BIT games in the series for it. That would rock!

While that's not a bad way to mark Sonic's 15th anniversary, I wish Sega would have thrown in at least one more game, like Sonic 2. But if this is true, it's still cool, and it's nice to hear that the GBA isn't entirely dead yet.

Oh, wow, if this actually happened I'd be all over it. I wish there was a way to play the original Sonic games on the go. :D

LOL! Yeah really, but I think he meant carried in his pocket.
So when is this game coming out? Shouldn't it be out already? His birthday was yesterday! Where's the game?
I really do hope that this is the start of another new Sonic trilogy for the GBA. If they would give us Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 for the GBA, that would be really great! Especially if they followed them up with Sonic & Knuckles with lock-on tech!
OK, I know that last one will probably never happen, but Sonic 1-3 for the GBA would still be really great to have!

Are there going to be any special editions like the Sonic Adventure 2 10th Anniversary Set? Even if it's Japanese, I'll get it.

Sonic 1 with the spin dash from Sonic Jam in tact? If it has a good number of extras, it may sell well. Why look at Super Mario Advance for GBA, just a simple port of SMB2 from the Super Mario All-Stars Collection, it sold like hot cakes simply because it was a launch title however. Yet the new features added, made it a sure-fire winner.

Budget?
If it included ALL Sonic games (1,2,3,S&K, plus the combos) then I would buy it. But $20 for one fifteen year old game? Nah.

He just needs bigger pockets then.
Honestly though, I've never been able to get my hands on a copy of Sonic Jam, so I'd buy this just so I could play Sonic 1 with Spin Dashing. Sonic 2 however I'd rebuy even without any extras/enhancements.

Yeah, $20 is kinda steep for the first sonic game. Sega should seriously think about putting at least 1-3 on the one cart to make it worthwile IMO.
Unless thw whole game gets reworked with upgrades and the such like with the SMB and FF advance games.

Alright, is it just me, or 15 years ago did you guys think "Man, I wish there was some way to play sonic games on my gameboy! That would be so cool!"
I know I did, the 1991 me is going insane right now probably running around in his Vaurnet France t-shirt, and telling all his friends this.
The spin dash and save feature will do wonders for this game, especially the spin dash.
Oh, and if youre going to get a nomad, I guess you could say that youre going to need some deep pockets in more than one way!
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.
Thank you, Im here all week.

well I just placed a preorder for it on ebay... it's supposed to ship this Tuesday, November 14th... hope it doesn't get pushed back... I preordered the new Hot Wheels game from the same seller while I was at it... it's supposed to ship on the same day... so I should be getting two new GBA games soon... hopefully by the end of the week... the seller ships by UPS ground, so they should arrive quickly...

If it was 1-3, I'd be all over this. One classic game for $20 is too steep for me.

I agree, I hope it has some kind of art gallery, maybe a few music remixes. Yet it sounds like a direct rip from the Saturn's Sonic Jam by giving Sonic the spin-dash

I was at the Digital Life convention in October and they had a number of demo units of Sonic on display. They had televisions connected to the Game Boys so you could watch people playing. The framerate of the game was disgusting. It was running very slowly and obviously showed the GBA is unable to perform blast processing. I seriously hope the developers removed the slowdown or I can't imagine the game being worth owning.

Looking at screens and reading early reports, things don't look like they are faring very well. The frame rate is a major issue for this game because almost everyone has a memory of what Sonic the Hedgehog is supposed to look and feel like. The same thing happened for me with Sonic 2 on the Saturn Sonic Jam. The slowdown totally killed it.
The frame rate isn't even the biggest problem. Sega has decised to go with a 1 to 1 pixel ratio. Pretty, but dangerous. This pitfall is illustrated perfectly with MegaMan & Bass on the GBA. Making jumps and avoiding incoming enemies & bullets is very tough with a huge character and reduced sight distance. It might make Sonic unnecessarily frustrating. This happened with Sonic 2 on the Game Gear many moons ago. The SMS version is excellent, but the zoomed in viewpoint on the GG version makes it an exercise in pure frustration.
Porting the game for the 15th anniversary was a great idea, but all positive hopes may be dashed in the execution.

To me, being a diehard Sonic fan, I love this idea! Even without the save feature I would buy (hell, i dont even use the save feature when I chhose to play Sonic 3 again, I just pick a time (usually a friday night) and play from begining to end). I love the idea of adding the spin dash to this release of Sonic 1, I have always thought that it should be in there.
Now 2(ish) other things along this line that I would love:
More than 1 game, hell we all know they can fit more than one Sonic game on a GBA cart now.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles, heck I would be happy just to have Sonic 3 OR Sonic & Knuckles (Hey, Ya Know What Would Be Rly Rly Kewl? To Release Sonic 3 on GBA and S&K on GBA w/ An Cart Lock Top Like On the Genny!!! Maybe release sonic2 l8er!)!
And as for playing Sonic on the go, it was always a desire of mine, so at an early age I tracked down a Nomad online and got my parents to get it as a b-day gift, I l8er with my own money got a GG and have since bought myself a grt collection of GG games, and I most recently got a Laptop PC this past summer and keep a collection of Sonic games and emulators on it along with a special version of Sonic Mega Collection Plus that is ripped down to save space.
And real quick for those begging for more 15 anniversary stuff, Sega of America did have a limited production run of Sonic 15th anniversary collectors figurines that you could get by preordering the Sonic game for 360 at a GameStop (idk if they still got more, but the game comes out tomorrow so go check quickly. Sadly I dont have a 360, money, and my parents wont support me in this).

the new GBA Sonic is supposed to have a save feature also... I can understand if it has some slowdown... Sonic Advance 2 had some, and it was no big downer for it... but sure don't understand why the Saturn would have any slowdown while running Sonic 2... the Genesis was a 16BIT console... the Saturn was a 32BIT console... why on earth would it have any slowdown while running a 16BIT game?

I thought the same thing, but it really isn't about Bits, its about the Saturn architecture and how it is utilized. I think the Sonic games on Sonic Jam were emulated to save time, but at the cost of optimization. I think there may also be some slowdown in some of the others on the disc, but it stood out the most in Sonic 2 for me. The subsequent ports/emulation of Sonic 2 that have come out have been thankfully minus said slowdown, but it really is irritating on Sonic Jam. Even though all of the games have been rereleased to death with much better results, Sonic Jam is still worth it for the Sonic World portion.
