I visited Shanghai. Ask an english speaking local about the "shopping district" and just walk around, man. Hong Kong is the real gold mine but I remember seeing a ton of bootleg shops in China. If I remember correctly those bootleg shops had some real stuff too. Sorry I can't be more specific but I've never had a hard time finding cool things in Asia. You should keep your eye out for a chess set too. I regret passing up on all those nice stone carved ones you can find out there for like $50. Again, Hong Kong was the real gold mine for that too.

Never seen any shops that sell legit items when I went there. Becareful though, everything is pretty much a bootleg.

I'd say 0% percent chance of finding non-bootleg stuff in Beijing, maybe a bit better in Shanghai since it's their "showcase city". One thing you may want to look for is iQue stuff -- I got my iQue player loaded with Sin & Punishment there, no problem. (I had a friend help me, so I can't give specifics, but you are quite likely to find such things at a Carrefour or other large shopping center).

iQue stuff is legit and sold in many places. I don't think the iQue GBA or GameCube stuff would be of much interest, but as I said you can get S&P for the iQue player, and it's actually a pretty cool piece of hardware.

Don't expect to find any classic gaming goodness other than that, though! Hong Kong's the only place in China where you're going to find good classic stuff.

In Shanghai I visited a video game store called "Jacky" in one of the cities Carrefours. (its like a shopping mall with a gorcery store-alot of forgeign expats go there) The shop actually had some recent Japanese and US imports but most of the shop was chinese translations of other games (I picked up a GBA Naruto game!) If i remember correctly they had some older items as well, like they had a Japanese Mega Drive in its original box. I also saw some legit Asia region games at some Sony kiosks near larger department stores.

Beijing I dont remember seeing anything legit.

Enjoy your time in China!

Sounds more like a trip to collect bootlegs more than anything. LOL
