I had a couple of files on this at one time now the ones I have are outdated and with different numbers.
Anyone have an idea what the number of releases were for OFFICIAL NES titles in NA?
I know the number of unofficial throws the final tally off (Alladin Deck Enhancer 50in1 carts etc etc)
Same question again but with SNES as well. Any feedback appreciated

Does that include all the unlicensed games? Wisdom Tree, Panesian, etc.

Yes, it includes all unlicensed games. Remember, the unlicensed games aren't pirates or illegal or anything...they are just not licensed by Nintendo.
The 771 does not include Sachens, though.
Funny thing...I always thought it was 768. Where'd the other 3 come from?

I always thought that there was 772 released games. The one off of Joe's number might be from some game that most people don't count like Cheetahmen II or something like that. Not sure though.
But I think with Panesians, Cheetahmen II and the Myriad, it reaches 772.
rbudrick, you're "other three" probably are the Panesians.

I always thought it was like 838 but I include Sachens as a collector even though many don't :)

I always thought that Cheetahmen II is a real grey area. Since, as far as I know, you couldn't actually buy it during the lifespan of the NES, it wasn't a real release despite the intention for it to be.
That's just my $0.02 though. But it's something I'm wrestling with as I've just decided to go for a complete NES collection.
774 was my number for years, based mostly on Mike Etler's list. The DP list stands at 772 if I counted correctly.
ME has four non-games on his list, but doesn't have NWC1990 (gold or grey).
DP doesn't count both the licensed & unlicensed versions of Tengen's Pac-Man, RBI Baseball, and Gauntlet. Nor does DP count both NWC1990 cartridges. However, DP recognizes two variations of Maxi-15 (there were two slightly different sets of games).
Rightly or wrongly, neither list counts the Sachens. That issue has been debated elsewhere. If I were to start collecting again, I'd personally go with 776... DP's list with both versions of those three Tengen games, both versions of NWC1990, and both Maxi-15s. To me, those are more than just label variations. Many may disagree with me on that point, which is fine.
Oh, and there were both black and blue casings for various unlicensed games (Color Dreams? Bunch?). There were several re-released games, like gray cart Zelda and Zelda II, for example. Numerous games had minor program revisions. We could easily get carried away with such differences and never come to a firm answer.
