I am trying so hard to like the PSP. I really am. I am in love with the the ceramic white one. But I can't seem to find games that are really worth dropping $200-$250 on the system.
I tried to justify the buy with homebrew and emulators. But from what I hear, the current fimware wont support that.
What does the PSP have going for it right now? Ever since the DS picked up on sales, I haven't heard anything about it! [/i]

It's got some good games, but I dunno if your personal tastes will justify these titles with spending $250+ dollars:
Lumines (can be had sub-$20 now)
Field Commander
Pursuit Force
Virtua Tennis
Daxter
Ridge Racer
Gradius Collection
Lemmings
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
Plus upcoming titles like:
Super Ghosts & Goblins
Lumines 2
Loco Roco
NCAA Football 07
Micro Machines
And there are plenty of titles that I didn't mention that you might enjoy-there are some that didn't do well in reviews that I've found to be a blast, like Street Supremacy.
Firmware 2.7 won't do emulation/homebrew yet. I'd think PSPs in store are 2.5 or 2.6 models...which should handle 95% of games out there right now.
The only catch to homebrew with newer systems is the fact that you must have Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories to get it to work. Kind of a hassle, but not too overbearing.

I picked up a PSP with several games last November. I played it a handful of times, then went back to the DS. I kept the PSP because I just KNEW that the good stuff was still to come. Every new game that I wanted, I bought (very few). Every new game that I bought got played *maybe* twice.
My PSP stuff was sold away last Saturday, actually. I kept waiting and hoping that the joy was coming. It wasn't.

Actually, it was just announced yesterday that 2 PSP homebrew coders were able to unlock the kernel mode on 2.5 and 2.6 firmware. This will make it possible for those firmwares to be able to run EVERYTHING 1.5's can play homebrew-wise, including ISO's. You'll still need the GTA disc to access it though. They said an official release of the hack will be available in the next week or two.
In the meantime, you can still play homebrew on 2.0+ PSP's with the kxploit method. You'll only be able to play about 80% of the homebrew apps out there with it though.

There isn't much to like on the PSP, I'm afraid. Most of the games on the system is shovelware. Only upcoming original games for it are Loco Roco and Hot PXL. Sad.

Having Cool games like Syphon Filter, GTA, Lumines, Burnout, Taiko Drum Master, EXIT, Loco Roco, Daxter, Megaman Powered Up and Mercury (some of my personal favourites), Music, Movies, Pictures and tonnes of Emulation AND a web browser AND some old PC shooters just for kicks in one tasy package is awesome in my opinion, I love my PSP, I play it on a daily basis.

At the moment I currently would not buy a PSP.
I was hyped beyond beliefe for the PSP, and picked one up right away on launch. However it was mostly a letdown, and I haven't even played the system since November! :embarrassed:
Within a years time I would say the PSP will be a pretty solid system however. But I am considering selling mine, because I just got a car and I need to put a CD Player in it. ASAP! LOL

There are only 2 things that have stopped me from selling my PSP, GTA: Vice City Stories and Loco Roco.

I am happy with my purchase of the PSP that i got on launch day. I have the version 2.7 that I believe comes with Metal Gear acid 2. But I am happy with what they have available now and what they are going to be comming out with in the future. I'm all about gettin' a copy of Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth and Final Fantasy: Crisis Core when they come out. I aint gonna be getting rid of mine unless a re-model comes out.

Plenty of great PSP stuff out there. Syphon Filter is probably one of the best games the system will ever see. You can check out the DP review section for a ton of great games:

I got my PSP on launch day and can safely say, it's the least played and most disappointing system I've ever had. Most of the problem is due to the ridiculous $39.99 price point for sub-PS2 quality games.
That being said, playing SOCOM multiplayer online while lying in bed is still pretty cool. I haven't given up on the PSP yet.

You can manually downgrade the firmware to support emulators. But games I had fun with
Metal Gear Acid 1&2 (metal gear: portable ops coming soon)
Street Fighter Alpha 3
and thats really about it lol. Sony really can't justify the battery life.

Someone else mentioned it, but Exit is a fantastic game most people have passed up on. It's like a very stylish Prince of Persia minus the sword fighting.
Puzzle platforming excellence.
Mega Man Powered Up is awesome too. Two words. Level editor.
Add Lumines and Me and My Katamari (excellent despite repetative levels and an awkward control scheme) and you've got a decent set of top flight games.
Street Fighter Alpha 3: MAX and Darkstalkers are excellent fighters, obviously, but you'll need to deal with the D-Pad somehow to play them in any enjoyable fashion.
I just got Monster Hunter Freedom... um... the jury is still out. I want to like this game but it plays like a block of government cheese.

Just wait till the psone titles are available for download - thats what I'm excited about. I'll finally be rockin SOTN on the subway. GTA LCS has got me excited to see how R* is gonna treat Vice City Stories too.
I don't regret buying the thing yet.

For me the PSP library is all about 2 games:
1. Taito Memories Pocket
2. Space Invaders Pocket
The rest are all fluff :P
I have a few games for my PSP, but the only one I really sat down and played was Tales of Eternia. I probably won't get another PSP game until either LocoRoco or Silent Hill.

I can't believe how many negative comments I see regarding the PSP. To me, the PSP is a joy of joys. The emulation is just awesome. I know that the emulators aren't quite perfect, and that there are some issues, but the screen is so damn good, the sound is good, and you can emulate a lot of stuff on that thing. And that is just the emulation.
I think Daxter is pretty damn amazing. To be able to play a game of that quality on a little portable unit, with graphics that are virtually PS2 quality, is pretty astonishing to me. GTA is pretty damn pimp as well. Wipeout is one of the best. There are many other great games, it's just amazing to me that people try to find everyway possible to mention something negative about the PSP. I do wish it had two analog sticks, and rumble and a dramatically better D-Pad.

Agreed. The whole "PSP has no games" thing is beat. Get over it fanboys. There's a ton of great, exclusive games on the system. I'm sorry you kids can't afford one, but I'm a working adult and I don't want to raise dogs or play Sodoku to kill time. The upcoming PS1 emulation is going to absolutely rock, and I pity the fools who let overzealous Nintendo fans keep them from some of the best gaming around today.

I had a PSP as well. Once I got a DS, I never touched it again. Sold it to get a DS Lite. With flashed firmware and a Supercard SD, I can emulate to my heart's content. The real fanboys are the ones who won't admit there's a drought of good games on the PSP -- It's nice hardware, but there are so very few games that make it worthwhile.
If PSX emulation is amazing, I will surely be happy to acquire another PSP down the line. I just can't help thinking of "Sega Smash Pack" over and over again. :(

Yes, because no one who can afford the machine can't think it's too expensive, right?
I play a buddy of mine's whenever I visit. It's a great little machine. The screen is fantastic. The games, that he has, don't really grab me anymore than my DS games, or any less really. It's just too much for what you get. When it comes down I'll def. be getting one. Till then, I'll make do with my other portables.

While I agree with your overall view, I do think it's funny you choose to fight fanboyism with comments like that.
Also, for the record, the PSP has two Sudoku games on it now.
And as far as the upcoming PS1 emulation goes, it's way too early to tell what it is they're going to try and do. For all we know it'll be Battle Arena Toshinden and Blasto available for download for $9.99 each. Hardly anything to get excited about.

I have never used my PSP for anything other than emulation. I have not seen any games that compel me to go run out and buy them. But, the Capcom collection and the Gradius Collection look quite nice...but $40 per game? I just can't stomach that kind of expense. I know game development cost are high, but UMD's can't cost that much to make. I just feel like I'm being gouged on any game I'd buy. I'm waiting for bargain bin and used PSP games to be like PS2 games so I can snag them up for $7

Sony is the pimp and you are his bitch :P
I keed, I keed...
That said, I guess I AM rooting for Nintendo these days. I love the Playstation, have come to like the PS2, but think the PSP and it's games are overpriced. I own a DS, but there are plenty of PSP games I'd like to play once the price of the system goes down like Lumines, Ridge Racers, Wipeout Pure, Exit, Me and My Katamari, Gradius Collection, OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast, Worms: Open Warfare, Loco Roco, Mercury and PQ: Practical Intelligence Quotient...
Cheers,
Ben

The big hurdle for the system is price, I don't think it should be 200 dollars, I think 100- 150, is more reasonable for the system. Yet the system is great and has a lot of under appreciated games, like Astonishia Story, the MLB 06 game was such a great translation of the PS2 game its almost errie..lol, not to mention the outrun port... holy crap.. now thats a great port. Anyway, the system is pricey, but it will drop hopefully once more this year, making it more affordable, and thus more desireable for more people.
