The part that I liked best was that one dude as the head of Saint's Row. That one actor with that voice. The voice acting is going to be really interesting with this game, and I think it's just going to be so amazing to play this in full 720p on a nice ass HDTV, with some good surround sound, because although this is a definite GTA ripoff, it's a GTA ripoff in a shiny new set of clothes and some next gen sound as well. Should be a tour de force, and then there is the whole online play thing too. August 1st, COME NOW!!!

at first i wrote this game off as another lame gta attempt but it looks like it will cause rockstar to really amp up the next in the series if they havent done so already.
kinda funny micheal rapaport (sp?) is in this since he was in GTA3. also its nice to see micheal clark duncan have a role in this. i loved him in pulp fiction

"the girls are all pretty and they don't have STD's" lmao
Micheal Clarke Duncan?! This game is going to be great! lol
Can't wait to play the demo on August 1st but of course it isn't going to be there thanks to microsoft :) I just really hope the game has good driving physics unlike GTA and it's nice to see a new graphics engine on a game like this. I used to play Red Dead Revolver and my brother walked in and was like "I didn't know they made a GTA western." Rockstar rode out the same graphics engine for like 5 years. But hopefully this is a good contender against GTA because some of the features I am reading about this game sound quite nice, such as the ability to rob stores, the different gangs, and of course the character customization. I just hope it's good and I hope it's a quality game that can be played for a long time.

Hopefully this game will get a patch to use the Xbox camera so you can put your own face on your character. That would be pretty damn cool. I wonder how many players will be able to play online at one time?
This game is going to suck up my life even worse than Oblivion, and that's saying something.

It's pretty.
And it looks like it might stand a chance against the GTA juggernaut.
I don't really folow this genre of games, I never really got into GTA, but this one looks pretty damn slick. I might check it out... if and/or when I buy a 360.

I really hope the xbox live multiplayer is fun and innovative and not stale and cheesy. I would love you have like 16 players running around the city doing whatever the heck they want to rather then just have the standard 8 vs 8 team deathmatch or deathmatch.
And it would be nice to see a co-op, both splitscreen and online. Where both players can be anywhere they want in the city causing chaos and still be able to talk to eachother and meet up and do some co-op missions or formulate a plan where both of you can rob a bank.
Idk that would just be fun

I like the character design.
I like the voice acting talents.
No load times
NPC look more lively ( Haven't seen the final product though)
The Radio reflects ingame actions.
Cons
Do I really want another GTA journey from an unknown?
Combat looks a little broken
They say its next gen, but it looks like it could have been done on the xbox.
They say it's completly new, but your still doing the same stuff as you would in all 3 GTA games.
I'll have to wait, and see more. Otherwise it doesn't look like its 90% worth my time & money yet.

Yeah, there are alot of people out there that find it envigorating to consider GTA type games to be worthless trash. Part of it might be the connection with Hip Hop culture, etc, etc, and the person just can't stand Hip-Hop. Or part of it could be like, "I don't play that trash....That's for the Joe Sixpack and Jerry Springer crowd". For the uncivilized.
Personally, I find the huge worlds and do anything type gameplay to be a nice breath of fresh air. I will admit however, that at a certain point, they do start to get boring, and sometimes the missions feel like chores. But playing this game online? How could it not be a blast?

Yes, it's definitely online. The question is how many people simultaneously, and what kind of multiplayer modes will be available?
I'm guessing 16 players at a time, with various multiplayer modes like:
16 player free for all
two rival gangs of 8 players each
four rival gangs of 4 players each
Stuff like that. It would be absolutely spectacular if they could somehow get it to 32 players, but I seriously doubt that, and it would be pretty damn dissapointing if they can only get 8 players working with it.

I was talking with somebody yesterday who was interviewing the lead designer for the game, Chris Stockman. His response to the people who said it looked just like GTA was a question: Why shouldn't people take the sandbox gameplay idea and run with it? The game will end up being far more fleshed out than R*'s PS2 hit, and the folks who will end up benefiting most from the releae are us, the consumers. It will be a challenge for them to shake the notion that they're old news, but a high quality release should do much towards that end.

Just a side note, I was speaking with an (ex) member of Volition recently, who quit the Saint's Row project. He cited poor management, organization, and said that production of the game has not been going well (it was originally slated as a launch title). He also didn't seem very confident in the current release date. I'm not saying anything one way or the other in regards to the game, but just perhaps take caution.

Well I picked up a demo today from gamestop. I like I like.
I has alot of gta influence (what games don't) but in this one you can have a partner and the drive bys in the car are funny. To me the city is more interactive. The acting seems great.
I predict this one will be a seller.
The only drawback is the whole gangbanger cussing theme. Some people might be a little tired of the been there don't that. But if you are into that then I think you'll like this one. Gta on steriods.
One more thing when you go to freckled bicthes pick me up a hamburger:) The Demo's worth the preorder.
I don't think they will put this on live for download unless edited. to much cussing and killing.

I watched an older video on this yesterday, and was impressed by the sheer size of the game world. It's basically what a GTA game would be with higher power behind it, and that's what I'm expecting out of it. I was more impressed with the character creation tool, which is something I see motivating Rockstar to improve the GTAs. I did some some stuff that worried me, like floaty car physics on big trucks, but stuff like that doesn't bug me unless it gets in the way of major missions.
They seem to be taking the "sandbox" game idea to a new level by making such a big world, making it loading-screen free (according to the old vid anyway), and letting you tackle as many or as few missions as you want for a given style of mission. That's the kind of stuff that will further the genre, and result in better games due to competition.

I think that if anything it will improve any GTA that will be released also Saint rows looks like a good game but I don't know I think the driving physics in GTA are alot better but that the character customization for saint row is alot better so we will see especially since it's the first game, but competition is a good thing

Yes, especially if they actually test for bugs unlike the True Crimes, which were never taken seriously in large part due to their many game-killing glitches. One thing that stood out to me is that this if I hadn't seen the title, I really would have thought it was a new GTA - which is a compliment to the developers. If folks can get what is essentially a new GTA without the name or long wait between titles, then Rockstar's hand will be forced, and they'll have to innovative and continue to improve the games extensively with each outing.

However I sensed a lot of framerate issues with a lot of slowdown in the footage shown. Hopefully that's not an issue.

I picked up the demo today at GameSpot. You have to reserve Saint's Row for the 360 with at least a $5 deposit. So I went ahead and slapped $5 down, just to get my hands on the demo. I have absolutely no intention of buying that game from GameStop, but I was just way too impatient to wait for the Demo to hit live. I figured $5, what the heck.
Anyways, I played the whole demo tonite, and I must say that I'm dissapointed that I finished it. I wish there was more of the game on the demo, but it's definitely enough to get a little taste of the action. The demo also has some other stuff on there, like a video on the making of Saint's Row. It's pretty cool.
Ok, my take on the game is this. Certain things about Saint's Row are very dissapointing, and certain things are amazing. It just depends on what you are looking for out of the game. Also, this demo is just a small taste of the game, so trying to form an opinion on the whole game off of just this demo is probably not the best idea. As for the dissapointments, the main thing is that this just basically kinda like San Andreas in 720p. I'm kinda dissapointed in the fact that once you get beyond the HDTV visuals, you are basically playing the same game. Of course, the amazing part about it, is that this isn't such a bad thing.
I mean, I'm dissapointed because I thought that Volition was going to really take things to a whole new level, and based on this demo, I don't think they have. Again, I could be completely wrong. The demo is a very small slice of Saint's Row, so it isn't a sure thing that I can really get a good judgement of this game just off this brief demo. The thing is, still, this game is damn good, and damn impressive, and certain things will make you say, WOW, that is sweet!!. The explosions and the fire and the sound effects and the 5.1 sound of the game are all outstanding and really take things to a new level. The fact that you can get out of the car and go into a building and the whole thing is 100 percent seamless is pretty damn awesome. The scope of the City is pretty awesome.
There is no question that I'm going to be spending some serious time with this game come August 29th. Man, late August is going to be a bitch with both Madden and Saints Row coming out on consecutive Tuesdays, all of this on top of the fact that I already should have Dead Rising and be totally engrossed in that. It appears I should play alot of retro games now, cause in late August, I'm going to be playing a ton of 360 games!

The leader of the Saints is voiced by Keith David. And the general consensus is that he rules. I happen to fully agree. 8-)
As far as Saint's Row is concerned, it looks spectacular. I don't own a 360, but I really do plan on owning one primarily for the Neon synth, but Saint's Row would be a nice addition.

Anyway back to the game. I also think Keith David voice adds to the gameplay. Gamespot had a preview of an almost finished build. There are something like 36 neighborhoods and when do sucessfully take over one the rival gangs will try to take it back. Interesting. It was a good read it talks about songs and stuff.

Yesterday I got this demo from GameStop for $5, and I played the whole entire demo last nite. I followed the various missions and finished the demo. It was pretty amazing but very short. In some respects I was slightly dissapointed, in other respects, I was impressed as fuck.
Anywho, today I fired up the demo, and my whole interest was to just freelance it, and explore the game world, without following any missions as much as I could. When you first start the demo, they want you to meet up at the Church, but the thing is, you can immediately start doing whatever you want, and just not go to the church. The game world is 100 percent open. (Well at least the sections that are available in the demo). One really cool thing, is just to go to a busy street, on foot, and just sit there and watch the people pass. Watch the cars pass. Watch the cops pass. People will say some crazy things, and stuff will start taking place right in front of you. You will see other gangsters running around involved in things, with the police chasing them. It's pretty cool. The City is very interactive, in such, that things are taking place whether you are around or not.
I didn't mention much about the graphics of Saints Row, but on this 720p TV, I can say they are damn impressive. Especially the shadows from the trees and the lighting in the game. For some reason, the game gives me this vibe of East Coast cities with the brick buildings and the trees and the shade. It's hard to explain what I mean, but those that have played the demo know. It's kinda got a Chicagoland feel to it.
The 5.1 sound could end up being award winning. Due to the extremely hot weather conditions, I haven't been able to play this on my Garage Theater, with the 7.1 sound, but in my little computer room, on a mini 5.1 system, it's still impressive as hell. There is alot going on in the surround channels. I like that. Also, when you are on foot, and cars are passing you, you can actually hear the songs playing in their cars. Sometimes you can even hear the cars bumping down the block, some much louder than others!! The really cool thing, is that the bumping will fade in and then out, via your surrounds and main channles, and it sounds incredibly realistic and accurate. Impressive indeed! Another really cool sound effect are the Elevated Trains that go by. I mean it sounds like I'm in Chicago, hearing the EL go by, and my apartment is like a block away. Very realistic.
The one thing that I'm not seeing, that I was really hoping to see, is to be able to somehow have some more interactivity with the people on the street. Like being able to kind of talk to them, ala Oblivion. You will see women walking around, actually wearing cute outfits, and I feel the need to try to hit on them, and when are we going to see a game where you can actually hit on a hoochie on the street, spit some serious game, and get her to come back to your apartment? When are we going to see some adult shit in a game. Like if you make it to first base with her, you get a certain bonus, 2nd base a certain bonus, 3rd base, etc, etc. If you actually hit it, and seal the deal, then it's like completing a mission. You should be able to have a stable of honeys that you see on the side! Why not? Japan has tons of dating sims, we can americanize it a little bit, and it's just trying to pick up on chicks and bang them, why can't that be a sub mission in one of these games? Or would it have to go from Mature to Adults Only? Why in R rated movies is sex and stuff acceptable, but once you put it in a video game, it has to get the XXX rating?
Bottom line, Saints Row is at the same time slightly dissapointing, but also pretty damn special. I know that sounds like a contradictory statement, but I honestly think it's the best way to explain it. It didn't quite take things to a dream level that I would like to see, but it's still a very good imitation of a great game, on a much more powerfull system with all the bells and whistles. If you are a hardcore GTA fan, this is going to be a fun diversion, no matter whether it meets your possibly high expectations.

So it's finally out. IGN gave it an 8.5, and gamespot still doesn't have a review up yet.
Not sure if I'm gonna pay $60 for this game, but the IGN review makes it sound pretty good, especially since that even though it's a blatant hardcore rip off of GTA, it supposedly surpasses GTA and fixes some chronic problems of Rockstar's baby.

Kind of ignorant if you don't try it first don't you think?
Wake me up when people remember their opinions don't mean jack shit, and learn being humble is just passing by something that you are not interested in, and not placing a comment on it.
It's a game you just blow crap up, and no matter what the theme is, alot of people like it.

The guy from Contra and Frank from Dead Rising are both genuinely cool indeed 8-)
However, the black dudes I see in the photos\videos of Saints Row have the sort of "artificial coolness" a bad hip-hop MTV video clip has, and that makes this game look like another confident cash-in to me.
Note that I wasn't targeting black characters in general, but the way they're portrayed by todays superficial hip-hop pop culture. Garcian Smith (Killer 7) for example could kick all their sorry asses anyday of the week 8-)

Finally picked this up last night. And since the only GTA game I ever liked was Vice City (I'm a total 80's freak....) I was a bit skeptical, too. The demo, IMO, was just too short.
Lo and behold, I am having a blast with this game - literaly and figuratively.
I like the way the missions are layed out. And the whole city is wide open from the get-go. The voice acting is excellent and not over the top sarcastic (like GTA). It tries to be a little more serious than GTA. The auto-aim is way more forgiving than most other games of the sandbox genre..
In a nutshell - GTA:SA fan will adore this game. If you aren't - then I'd still suggest a rental. It's still a fun game - GTA similarities aside...

I have a couple day long rental of this...lots of visual glitchs (on my copy anyway) where the charcater in a car is all of a sudden just floating along (car disappears) or music stops, digital lines as well.... weird and lame for a "next gen" super system....
other 360 games are ALL clean in running.
a tad too silly (kill the neighboring gangs off) and boring story-line like for me as well... the whole gansta thing is getting WAY too old for me... maybe growing up surrounded by these folks in detroit (with lame-ass real gangstas) pisses me off so much that it is now "cool" to act like this in a game... i guess being harrassed and stolen from and threatened in real life does not carry over well for me in a game...
and as well the blaxploitation ticks me off... race relations in this country are bad enuf without CG morphed stereotypes for middle american suburban white kids to pretend to be "cool" with via trash talking side-ways shooting societal trouble-makers.... i am glad i just rented it...
The online games are just plain crap in both graphics and in just what they are...
an overall just plain copy-cat GTA LAME game... with a lame-o story
I am no censor fiend but come on game-makers... get at least a little bit more creative here...

I have a couple day long rental of this...lots of visual glitchs (on my copy anyway) where the charcater in a car is all of a sudden just floating along (car disappears) or music stops, digital lines as well.... weird and lame for a "next gen" super system....

Man, lighten up, the game is supposed to be funny, not serious. Volition is making fun of the whole psudo-ganster fad, not promoting it.
It's a satire, plain and simple, just like GTA and most other games of it's ilk.

well games.
I myself am enjoying this GTA clone, lots of funny stuff going on all over the place, huge amounts of stuff to do, and online as well, not bad.

This, currently, is my GOTY. I LOVE the open world genre, and Saints Row gave me more than any GTA/GTA ripoff ever did. Everyone has an opinion. This is mine, so bugger off :P.

Wake me up when black guys with guns stop being cool please
What if white guys with guns start being cool?
Hrmm, thats an interesting point. Isn't Frank from Dead Rising cool?
hell yeah! he's covered wars you know...
got my copy yesterday from the enticement of a mode called "big ass chains". gave singleplayer a shot.
opinions time! may contain spoilers...but not much
likes
-GPS-like waypoint system
-Insurance Fraud Missions
-Freckled Bitch's (it made me laugh when I realized it's real world counterpart)
-warping to shore
dislikes
-player creation, now hear me out I really dislike creating characters in game...it's like work to me and when tying this character into the game's storyline he doesn't add anything. (Literally, your character picked up off the streets...kinda lame.)
-graphical glitches, so much screen tearing it hurts my eyes.
-the inablity to climb on objects.
-Keith David's very speedy manner of speech for Julius...Goalith never spoke so damn fast.
still a very fun game

I'm starting to get really pissed at the "disappearing car" glitch. I pray they patch this soon.
This has screwed me up on several missions.

Well I was gonna rent this game from my online service, but then I got $50 free from my BB rewards zone card. So I'll probably just buy it, unless some one can convince me that it's not worth $11.95.
Don't know if you already bought it but Best Buy rewards members can print a $5 off coupon on the myrewardszone.com site. The coupon is a regular one but says the cashier is supposed to scan the memership card along with the coupon.

I kind of thought the same thing until I saw some peoeple creating look alike characters on another forum. An Abraham Lincon character with the top hat and suit and things like that. made me kind of appreciate the intuitive system. I like how they added 'plastic surgeons' so you can change your race and features whenever you want for a small price.
I saw a lot of people trying to make General Lee's out of their bootleggers too.

I've played Saint's Row for over a week now, and I must say it's a pretty damn good game. The voice talent is superb; Keith David, Michael Clark Duncan, David Carradine and Joaquim de Almeida are a few of the stars you'll hear.
More importantly the graphics are just gorgeous... in HD. I won't play it on anything less. Stilwater's districts are as diverse as the people that live there. There's projects and industrial areas as well as ritzy suburbs and high class business plazas.
The gameplay is engaging. Nothing satisfies like seeing a car crash victim fly through his windshield onto the street! The explosions are nice and messy. I was actually killed by a flaming car chassis that landed on me from 30 feet in the air.
My only gripes are the glitches. Sweet God, there's glitches! Plus the Mayhem activity... what purpose does it serve other than forcing the player to run rampant and destroy everything?
Still, the Row is truly a sweet gaming experience IMO.

Finally got this game in the mail from my rental service (since BB reward points apparently take 30 days to reflect o your account), and have been playing it for a bit, I like it.
The presentation is great, especially the visuals for this type of game, the missions are fun, the aiming is great, lots of options at the shops, and the side stuff is also really fun. In a lot of ways it's better than even San Andreas.
Though there are a few problems that would prevent me from spending a full $60 on this game:
-glitches
-story isn't all that interesting, or at least not as good as SA
-city is very small
-not enough vehicle variety
None of which are giant problems, but when you consider that this is supposed to be next gen, and it costs as much as it does, and doesn't even feature all the things that something from the last genereation did, it makes the price tag a lot harder to swallow.
I mean really, take off the fresh coat of paint and this game could be on the PS2, which for me means no purchase till it's $30 or below.

I had played the demo twice and was looking forward to this game... except it doesn't have subtitles. That's a deal breaker for me. More money in my pocket then!

How is the online mode?
I am contimplating picking it up but I still haven't decided, just wanting some input on the game, it seems pretty cool especially with the Online Mode

I'm having a lot of fun with the Protect tha Pimp mode online, although you will run into a laggy game or two/cheaters more often than not. They're working on the patch though, which I hope solves most of this. It's just taking forever for them to release it :P.

OK, i've had Saints Row for awhile now, And I got to say..
It's just another gangsta game.
Sure, You can do more stuff, Like go and rob a store at night Or start a hold up during the day, But, other than that, I'm getting burned out on gangsta games.
The online mode has been horrible to me. Why do people think they have to freaking imitate gangstas in this game!! ITS JUST A GAME!!! Also most of the people online with this game are AWFUL! I've been burned online too much with this game that I am never going to use the damn online mode with it again (Unless it's with REAL People)
The graphics, For a sandbox game, Are next gen, But then again all Sandbox games look awful for the console they are played on.
The missions, to me, Are the same thing again and again.
Since I played Dead Rising, I have no idea how I could play gangsta games.
As soon as I beat this game i'm sending it back and am going to get Dead Rising again.

I was very dissapointed with this game, the demo was alot more fun then the game I am not to far into it but do I have to do a side mission to get enough respect to play main story line mission everytime.

You have to. Kind of adds to it, You can go steal a Vegas car and rob 3 stores at night then use the cash made from the theft to mod your car.
Oh and you can't use the money you earned in the game for buying clothes online. You have to play a LOT of matches online before you can buy any decent clothes.

When I got my 360 last week I asked for Saint's Row as part of the bundle. But they didn't have it in stock, so I went with Dead Rising.
I downloaded the Saint's Row demo and I'm glad I didn't buy it. GTA has some funny wit in it like pedestrians saying "Ma mother's ma sister". The Saint's Row pedestrians don't say anything more interesting than "Fuck this shit." Overall it just seemed like what would happen if GTA went down the Need for Speed route. Need for Speed was a great series, then they turned "urban".
If someone is going to try to rip off a good game they could at least use some of what makes the other game so great. In this case, humour. "Yo, Dawg. I be pimpin' my hoes fo' sho' " just isn't funny. Also, is the entire city as boring as the area in the demo? Everything is beige and there aren't any landmarks.
