Dragon Force.

I think I hated just about everything else they did. I liked Dragon Force because of the storyline and combat, which I don't think Working Designs technically had anything to do with.

Just my $0.02.

Curse you for stealing my post. Fine, I'll vote for Iron Storm. Honestly, I'm surprised they didn't throw in some animuphile crap in it :)

To further throw some positive juju at Working Designs (who, for the most part, I outright hated and was glad to see die off), they did improve Alundra a good bit for the US release. Screwing with monster tables and such is normally a good way to fuck up a perfectly good game (example: Exile 2, also localized by Vic), but cutting the boss fight lengths in half was a damned good thing.

...and I know they're not a super big name developer, but if you could find it in your heart to give a day to Monolith (the No One Lives Forever guys!), I'd love you forever :(

i enjoyed most of the games that Working Designs brought over. i didnt get instantly excited when i saw their logo on a game, but i did look forward to what they would do next. my favorite game developed by would probably be

Dungeon Explorer

I'd say either of the PSX Lunars or the Growlanser pack for the PS2.

If I can sorta cheat and say any game they were associated with, I'd say Silhouette Mirage. Mind you, i've only played the JP Saturn version, and I understand the PS port is pretty bad, but I quite like the game.

It's not the Playstation port that's bad (it's not as good as the Saturn version, but it's pretty damn far from bad), it's the US localization of the Playstation version that sucks :(

Piggybacking on Exile, that game was pretty damn awesome. I should play through the end portion again to see if that small graphical glitch during the ending is still present in the newer builds of Mednafen.

Shame about the second one. Even Vic admits that he royally fucked up the localization on the second game, which is really telling since that assclown was always super defensive over his work.

edit - oh wait, you ARE talking about the second game. How on earth could you enjoy that unbalanced fucking mess? Hell, the core game wasn't even as nice as the first ...it seemed like a lazy sequel, with cut and paste town designs and generic music. Plus, the hitbox was seriously messed up on your character, so ducking was absolutely pointless because you were still going to get hit.

Of what I've played, I'd probably go with RayStorm. Yes, I am nuts about RPGs, but I feel Working Designs was often scraping the bottom of the barrel as far as what Japan had to offer (that is, what wasn't already picked up for localization by bigger companies). While I still haven't played several of their games, so I admit ignorance on some, the RPGs I have played didn't thrill me that much.

Mine favorite game published and translated from them is Lunar 2: enteral Blue -ps 1

Day 2: I love you!

Tron 2.0

My third favorite first person shooter ever and easilly in my top 10 games ever. Inventive use of the license (really expanding on the universe) with that special "Monolith look" in the characters and animation. As is par for most Monolith games, it's got some flat out amazing level designs (hard drive format!) and creative weapons (nothing beats the claw!). The game encourages replayability without resorting to Rare-like tactics and has a truely memorable final battle.

If there's one thing the game could be faulted on, it's the ending. The game was set up for an expansion pack that it'll never get because the game sold like complete shit on both PC and Xbox :( You can't go wrong with either version!

Disclaimer: I've yet to play FEAR or Condemmed because I have a ghetto PC. That'll be rectified next month

Actually, I did mean the first one, I just confused myself. Although I don't think the second is as bad as people say.

Toaplan = Batsugan, a Saturn shooter that i am actually pretty ok at. mainly because its one of the easier ones. someone will say Zero Wing because of the "all your base" stuff i am sure.

Day 3: Toaplan

Toaplan used to make arcade games and a couple game console games.

Here is a list of the games they made.
http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/company/46146.html

Some of these games on that list, you may recongize on game consoles, Like Zero wing, Twin Cobra to name a couple.

My favorite game is M.U.S.H.A. -Genesis. Truxton, Snow Brothers and Hellfire close behind.

j_factor
07-04-2006, 01:51 AM
Day 3, Truxton: Grind Stormer.

Day 4, Psygnosis: Wow... really tough call here. I'm a big fan of Psygnosis. They were one of the best around during the Genesis/Amiga days and then the Playstation days. As much as I love Shadow of the Beast and Roll Away, I think I'm gonna have to give the nod to Fatal Rewind. That was one seriously intense game.

DigitalSpace
07-04-2006, 03:19 AM
Day 1: Believe it or not, I've never played a single Working Designs game.

Day 2: Ditto with Monolith.

Day 3: Fire Shark (Genesis). My third favorite vertical shmup of all-time, behind Ikaruga and Space Megaforce.

Day 4: Destruction Derby (PSX). It's especially fun in multiplayer.

Also, to the OP, I suggest listing the companies you selected for the previous day in the first post, for those who missed out on them but wanted to respond. Saves a lot of time scrolling through the thread to figure things out (not that I don't encourage reading through the thread, but you get the point).

Day 4: Psygnosis
Wipeout XL without a doubt! I can't say enough about this game. It's the reason I bought a Playstation. There just isn't any compliment I can give it that you haven't heard from 5-10 people in the last 12 months. That tells you how damn good Wipeout XL is. 10 years after its release, you still can't go any extended period of time without someone mentioning its music, style, mechanics, battle elements and graphics all in the same sentence.

Midway & Sony did WO64. How did the Sony/Psygnosis thing go? Did Sony aquire the Psygnosis team? Heck, Psygnosis may have done WO64 in that case.
You prefer WO64 over WOXL?

Kid Ice

Psygnosis is one of my favorite developers. Wipeout XL.

I don't remember who did WO64 but it wasn't Psygnosis. And yes they were absorbed into Sony.

CORRECTION: WO64 was developed by Psygnosis and published by Midway. Sometimes it's easy to confuse the publisher/developer thing.

I thought it was Midway & Sony that did WO64, which is why I asked how the Sony Psygnosis thing worked. I wasnt sure if Sony just aquired the name, projects & licenses from Psygnosis or if Sony actually kept the Psygnosis team too.

That GameFAQs list doesn't include McDonald's TreasureLand Adventure. Probably won't be anybody's favorite Treasure game, but it's a good one.

My favorite Treasure title has to be Ikaruga. I can play that over and over. I entertain fantasies of becoming an Ikaruga master, but I know it's not gonna happen.

Ironically I just started playing Dynamite Headdy again yesterday; I guess that's my second favorite. That or Gunstar Heroes.

Wasn't too impressed with Alien Soldier, Light Crusader seemed OK, not spectacular though. Haven't played Radiant Silvergun, unfortunately.

DigitalSpace
07-08-2006, 05:04 AM

Day 1 Working Designs: I have almost all the WD games for SCD, Saturn, PS1, PS2 so it is really tough for me to pick, but I will go with Dragon Force. I have played through 6 or 7 of the scenario's on that game.

Day 6: Treasure

Without a doubt Radiant Silvergun, it is hte best shooter ever.

Another great one no one has mentioned is Sin & Punishment for N64. I just got this and it is pretty dang cool. Not RSG or Ikaruga cool but close.
