Getting 360 To Start the game??

I am trying to start up my 360, and when I turn it on it shows the language screen and I am trying to get my controller to start but nothing happens. I put the batteries in the controller and I can't get it to start. Anyone?? Is there something you need to do, like a setup or something?

Did you turn the controlller on by pressing the guide button for a second?

Thanks it worked. I didn't hold it down long enough for it to light up.
