Who else thinks it is the single greatest game ever created? I never get sick of playing this game. The atmosphere, graphics, sound, and perfect gameplay are second to none IMHO. There are other greats that i love, like The Legend Of Zelda, The Legend Of Zelda The Wind Waker, Super Mario Brothers 2, Super Mario Brothers 3, and Castlevania Symphony Of The Night. But for me this game takes the cake. Who else agrees? Discuss

It's in my top 10 because of the exploration and music. The atmosphere in the game is wonderful, but it does not have the greatest replay value for me personally.

I enjoy the hell out of this game, but I like to stay away from it for a year or two. That way when I come back to it I've forgotten where everything is, and it's kind of like playing for the first time again, sort of.

One of my fav all time games as well. I just started a game the other day. One of the funny things is I never have got the best ending or 100% items. I always just beat the game at my own pace.

i still think the original is a better game for it being open ended. the later games are too linear, though i certainly agree the polish on super metroid is top notch

super metroid is still FAR more open ended than Zero Mission or Fusion on the GBA. those 2 basically hold your hand through the entire game... that's not to say that they aren't also great games, but they're somewhat more simplified.

that being said, i love Super Metroid... i've only played through it twice, but i think i might have to do it again soon... it's been 2 years maybe.

Ditto. I play through it about every 2 years for the same exact reason.

Super Metroid is one of those games that I was fortunate enough to be around when it came out. Unless I’m wrong, wasn’t it spring of 1994? Anyway, I remember renting it and being blown away. Everything about that game is top notch. The graphics, gameplay and sounds are right on the money. It’s due to Super Metroid’s greatness that I was so disappointed with Metroid on the Game Cube.

I remember getting that game on my 9th birthday and spending hours trying to beat it. It wasn't until 6 or 7 years later that I finally got the "best" ending.

I was slightly dissapointed with Metroid Fusion and completely dissapointed with Metroid Zero. It felt like they were trying to recreate the magic of Super Metroid, only they failed horribly at it.

This is one game I really need to re-visit. I don't remember being blown away when I played it , but I missed it the first time around in the early 90's , I didn't have a SNES back then.

I've got it sitting here, gonna have to give it a go soon

Really? I was disappointed with Fusion, especially at how that guy walked you through it. But I loved Zero Mission, it was a lot like playing Metroid again. It was a little more linear than Super Metroid, but I really enjoyed it.

Well given Fusions story, the linearness was more forgivable than in Zero. I don't understand why they ruined the entire exploration aspect that the original had and turned it into just another simple game. Also, them slapping "Zero Mission" annoyed me as well, I was expecting something other than a crummy re-make.

this game is definately on my top 10 all time, and its my all time fav snes game. This game represents a time for me in gaming, the 94-98 era which brought alot of great games, and systems, the saturn, ps1... and the genesis and snes glory days.... ahhh the memories. Now back to Super Metroid.... this game owned a bunch of my time back when it was released. I remember devoting hours and hours to this game until I finally conquered it... great game, so much to do and see, this game is (imo) the best in the series. Great game, and to anyone out there who hasn't had the privilage of playing this... PLAY IT... and remember to PLAY IT LOUD!!! (sorry, SNES gaming motto of the mid 90's...)

I still haven't gotten even close to 100% on this game, out of the decade or so I've played it.

DYK: I have never ever played Super Metroid. I will sometime this year. :D

I also have yet to play through Super Mario World, Mario All-Stars, Zelda Link to the Past, all 3 DKC games, all the SNES RPGs, Blackthorne etc. Man I have a lot of SNES goodness in the future ;)

BTW, interesting story on Super Metroid. A DP member sold it to me for $7 shipped, I offered 8 but he said "Shipping ain't that much, make it 7." Hey I wasn't going to complain lol.

But, he took 3 weeks or so to send it. And stressed me out all the while.

When the package came, I found out he threw in Mario AllStars to make it up to me. Game was a double for me, and in so-so shape, I still managed to get $12 shipped out of it off eBay, and he ended up paying $5 for Super Metroid... essentially! :)

Ruining the game? Well, load the ROM into the tile layer and paste the new sprites.

http://acmlm.overclocked.org/board/thread.php?id=19042

I remember when I released it everyone said she looked like Mai Shiranui :/ ... One guy on the Metroid Database forums even accused me of cutting and pasting Mai's KOF sprites into Super Metroid. O_O

Anyway, just Google up "Auximines" and "Metroid" and you should find the patch for the ROM.

As I've mentioned on the board before, Super Metroid is my favorite game of all time. It's a shame that Nintendo hasn't ported it to the GBA - it would be great to see it as one of the "final releases" on the console. But the GBA did see a new Metroid, and not only a port of the first Metroid, but a remake as well, so that's better than nothing.

I've played through the game twice, and the last time was about a year and a half ago. I'm really into the first Metroid right now, so there's a good chance that I'll start playing through Super Metroid for a third time in the near future.

Steve, you always get the best deals. Was it the original or players choice edition? I only have the players choice edition as of now. But i have heard that the original version is actually more common. And as far as the original Metroid game goes, it is hard as heck. I can not seem to defeat that game. Zero Mission was easy, but in the original enemies are relentless.

Steven

original. Best deals? I'm sure there's a handful out there who's been more lucky than me, but yeah, looking back at my game acquiring "career," I've been lucky. Esp. with Saturn, where over a span of 5 years I received more than 50 free games from 6, 7 different people...

I just got this game about a week ago. I was never too into metroid but I played the original this spring and got hooked. I had always heard how good Super Metroid was, but I hadn't gotten a chance to get it until recently. Anyway, I'm stuck. But the game is truly a classic. I believe the word "polish" is perfect for this game, because it's just oozing it.

Super Metroid was fun as heck when I first got it, but now it feels like a missed opportunity as there's no challenge to it (and thus little replayability). That's nitpicking, as it was designed for uncoordinated ten year olds, but if there were a harder mode I'd likely play it more often.

Oh, and for that hand-holding in Metroid Fusion, I take it somebody didn't see the hidden message? The endgame was a bit tough as well (hated the story elements but there's no ignoring that there are some freaky goings-on).

Certainly one of the all-time greats, but for me it serves as a reminder that so much more can be done with the medium.

I am having a terrible time finding this game for some reason. :/

I went out one day with 10 bucks hoping to spend 4 or 5 on a loose cart, hit a pawn shop, goodwill, salvartion army, several garage sales....nothing. I've asked in a few trades i've had since as well and no one seems to have a spare sitting around. Crazy.

I'll let you know if i like it if i ever find a copy. For the record I like both Zero Mission and Fusion.

Is it just me, or is the first Metroid so dang hard? The enemies are relentless, and it seems like hits do more damage. I was playing it tonight and for some reason, it made me think of Kid Icarus. There are some weird things in each game that remind me of each other, even though they are two totally different games.

I did access the secret message, as a matter 'o fact. That still doesn't change the fact that the game told you where to go, how to get there, and what you needed to do when you got there. To me, Metroid is about exploration and discovery, not an action RPG (Oh this computer reminds me of my dead mentor who meant a lot to me...ZOMG they implanted his personality in the computer!!). Adding story elements via dialogue or interface panels (ala Prime or Marathon) is fine. Fusion's was just too ...forced and guiding. You were a task runner, not an explorer. I think the plot development could have been handled a lot better, perhaps through interacting with dying scientists or something.

*shrug* These are just my opinions on it, though - everyone can certainly disagree with me :-)

That's intentional. Metroid and Kid Icarus were released on the same day (in 1987 IIRC). They were the first "Password Paks" for the NES, and are "companion games" of a sort. The temple areas of KI require Metroid-style exploration, and the later cloud stages of KI feature enemies that look a lot like Metroids.

Funny how Metroid went on to future greatness, but KI just kind of faded away. Just one Game Boy sequel. At least Pit will make an appearance in the new Wii Smash Bros. game.

Yeah I was on my 8th grade middle school trip to DC the day it came out. I wasn't a metroid fan really at all but the guy at the EB we went to in the mall was like you have to get this. So being a fourteen year old punk (now 26) with lots of dough that my pops gave me for the trip, I spent (I believe 60 bones) the cash for it. BEST on a whime purchase ever. So glad I bought it. I remember reading the box and it saying something like biggest boss on a video game ever. (something like that) Was so imprest with the game. I love it. On a seperate note, buying games when you were a kid felt so much more special. Probably because you don't have a lot of dough. Now I buy games all the time. Doesn't feel so special anymore.

The wall jump takes practice. When you're touching the wall (make sure it's a front flipping jump, too) hit the opposite direction and Samus will briefly pose like she's going to vault off the wall. This is when you press jump. It takes a little practice to get the timing down.

As for bomb jumping, I've never been able to do that at all and I've almost 100% completed the game (one damn missile tank) so don't worry too much.

I have probably played through Super Metroid more times then any other game I can think of. I'd almost say it's my favorite game ever. One of the main reasons I've played through it so much is because I'm obsessed with doing speed runs. My best speed run is completing the game in 1 hour and 5 minutes with 100%. My ultimate goal is to beat the game at 100% in UNDER an hour...even if it's 59 minutes and 59 seconds.

I just watched the 36 minute speed run video. That was the most awesome performance i have ever seen! He was bouncing off of everything flawlessly. Floating and hovering everywhere, my mouth was wide open through all four parts. On a side note, what was going on in the fight with Mother Brain's? Everything was glitching, and Samus was vanished? Very Very weird stuff.

That's a glitch people call the "Murder Beam". You can kill Mother Brain faster with it (and I think it works on some other bosses too...I forget). I never use it myself...cause I read somewhere if you do it wrong, you risk the chance of corrupting your saved data. Plus, I'd rather not use a "glitch" to help get a good time. Although, I guess the Mockball technique where you move faster in ball form if you morph right after a running jump, is considered a glitch...and I definitley use that one.

I used to play this game a fair bit back in the day. I found it so impressive. My friend had a copy and I used to spend hours wandering about in his save file. I didn't really know where I was going, but the exploration was fun and awe-inspiring.

Tonight I finished the game for the first time. I've had this copy since 2002, but I haven't felt compelled to try finishing it (my save file mysteriously deleted itself a couple years ago so was kind of unwilling to play again).

Nothing wrong with the cart though, must've just been some dirty connectors. Anyway.

Got 88% completion in about 6 hours, 30 mins. It's an awesome game that I would love to play through again sometime. None of it's sequels are anywhere CLOSE to being as good Super Metroid.

^^ Yeah you could argue that those three are the best ever.

Here are my ten favorite games ever created:

1. The Legend Of Zelda (The ultimate adventure, i still never get tired of playing through this game
2. The Legend Of Zelda The Wind Waker (For some reason this game brought back the feel of exploration and adventure from the first Zelda, better than ALTTP and OOT did. Plus it is such a beautiful game. I think it is the greatest game of this era)
3. Super Metroid (Probably the perfect 2D sidescroller)
4. Super Mario Brothers 2 US version of Dream Factory: Doki Doki Panic (I love the alternate world, plus Wart is cooler than Bowser)
5. Super Mario Brothers 3 (The best platformer ever created, and a better game than 2, but 2 brings back better memories than 3 for me)
6. Castlevania Symphony Of The Night (The second best 2D sidescroller)
7. Guardian Heroes ( greatest beat em up ever created)
8. Dragon Quest VIII (The greatest turn based rpg ever created)
9. Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic (The greatest western style rpg ever created. And greatest Star Wars game ever created))
10. Snatcher (The greatest Story and atmosphere ever created in a video game. It sucks you in and does not let go until the end)

Honarable mentions in no particular order:

1. The Legend Of Zelda A Link To The Past (Second best game on the Super NES)
2. Super Mario 64 (The game that redifined 3D platforming)
3. The Legend Of Zelda Ocarina Of Time (redifined 3D action/adventure games)
4. Mega Man 2 (The Blue Bombers greatest game. The second best platformer ever created)
5. Nights Into Dreams (A beautiful and unique railed platformer that everyone should play)
6. Archon (The most addicting game ever created)
7. Super Mario Sunshine (I think it is even better than Super Mario 64, but the impact was not the same for me)
8. Beyond Good And Evil (Amazing game, with one of the best stories and atmosphere's ever created)
9. Keio Yu Gekitai Katsugekihen (Amazing Japanese style platformer, with the most beautiful 2D graphics ever created, along with Atelier Iris Eternal Mana)
10. Castlevania 2 Simons Quest (The music and atmosphere still creep me out to this day. The original Metroidvania)
