View Full Version : How were pack-ins "packed in"?

At the moment.. I'm trying to "reconstruct" a couple of my boxed systems with their pack-in games. Most of my consoles are loose.. but a few are boxed but didn't come with their pack-in games.

I have a pristine 32X; boxed, complete with all the cables and even the metal gaurds and the spacer.. but on the outside of the box it says it came with Doom and Cosmic Carnage (I think it may have been a factory refurb).

I also have a boxed SNES that came with the Donkey Kong cart and it is missing.

What I'd like to know.. is when these games were packed-in.. did they have boxes/cases and manuals? Manuals.. I'm assuming.. but the funny thing is in both of these cases I don't even see how they could fit the games in.. let alone boxed. The Donkey Kong edtn SNES doesn't seem to have a place in it's foam form for it and the 32X was in a "bumpy cardboard tray" thingie so I can't see how two games would fit in the box.

What about Genesis and NES pack-ins? We should get some kind of definitive list going here. On a side-note.. I tossed my Jaguar box years ago and lost my Cybermorph cartridge. A few years back I bought a boxed Cybermorph game.. how rare is that? ;)

the original deluxe nes set had a slot for two boxed games in it (gyromite and duck hunt)

the jaguar didn't always come with cybermorph mine was a bare bones system, so the stand alone cart is proably just as "rare" as super mario bros or super mario world.

The NES action set had an SMB/DH cart packed in an NES sleeve (the ones that had the red Nintendo logo on them), and included the manual.

The SNES set with Super Mario World (I forget what this set was technically called) included an SMW cart, the clear cart sleeve, and a manual.

I'm pretty sure the Genesis Lion King bundle that my brother had just included the cart and manual, as I don't remember my brother ever having a box for that game. While Sega's previous pack-ins were CIB, Sega was getting cheaper with the packaging around this time (a short time later they started packing games in cardboard boxes).

My brother's Megadrive came with Sonic in the usual plastic retail box.

I got a 32X at launch and it didn't come with any games with it. It was just the system and the fixings. I did get Doom and a bunch of other games, but those were bought seperate from the system. I've never seen any factory 32X's ever packed with any games.

Yeah.. that's why I'm thinking mine is a refurb unit. It's in excellent shape though; and the box clearly has a sticker on it saying the games were included. Looking at it.. I can't see how the games would have fit in the box with cases (or in this case.. boxes [32X games]) so I'm just gonna' grab a couple of loose carts with manuals and call it "good".

The 32X bundles (there were at least four) were cart and manual only. I've seen it with Star Wars, Virtua Fighter, Doom and the Doom/Cosmic Carnage. The single game bundles were not refurbs, don't know about the two cart one.

My Genesis (model 2) came with Sonic 2 in the retail plastic case.

My Ice Blue GameBoy Pocket bundled with The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening had the cart already in the system and the manual was in the box next to the system manual.

Those are the only systems I've purchased that had pack-ins.

The Turbografx-16 with Keith Courage had the game in a normal jewelcase, with manual, and plastic sleeve just like a standalone Turbo game (minus the cardboard box Turbo games came in). I am guessing later Turbo packages (like the "Bonk Superset") were similar. I don't know how the Duo packed all the games it came with since I never owned one.

Thanks to everyone who contributed so far. I can contribute about the Turbo Duo. I have a complete boxed Turbo Duo (minus only the manual.. anybody want to sell me one?). It came with the pack-in games Gate of Thunder; Y's I & II; the two Bonk's and Ninja Spirit. I don't recall (unit's in storage) how the CD games are split up but they're on two CDs with 2 JC & manuals for all games and were both placed in a thin cardboard box with two holes in it that let you see the fronts of the CD cases. The Ninja Spirit game comes with the hucard in the little plastic sleeve and a manual but NO hucard jewel case.

I'm still wondering how the Donkey Kong Country game came packed in with the DK SNES bundle. Anyone can help?
