I was thinking, wouldn't it be kinda cool to somehow develop a fantasy football type thing, but with gaming predictions instead of football players? For example, I'm sure everybody has a feeling for who they think is ultimately going to come out on top in the huge battle between Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. Sure, we all know it's going to be a tight and interesting race, be we know that only one can ultimately claim the top throne.
I would love to put money into a thing about gaming predictions, and then see if I can win some $$$ based on my handicapping of the particular situations. Predictions can be made on all sorts of things, so that we aren't just waiting around for 5 years for the final tally between Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft. It could be 3 more years or more before we really know who will ultimately claim the No.1 spot.
But there are tons of other predicitons to be made, and coming up much sooner. Like the price of the Wii in the United States. The price of the virtual console downloads, the release date, the price of first party SCEA games for the PS3, all kinds of things to possibly predict on. We get award points, and the points turn into cash. I'm not sure how to setup a system like this, but I could figure one out if anybody is interested.
Hey maybe we could have a huge list of a bunch of predictions, we get 33 people to put $20 in the pot. The person that gets the most points due to accurate predictions, wins a brand new Playstation 3 at launch. That would be pretty sweet. I would put 20 snaps in the pot. The thing is, we would have to come up with tons and tons of predictions, and you would get a choice to either predict yes, no, or choose to pass. If you predict yes or no, and you are correct, you get 5 points. If you predict yes or no and are incorrect you get -5 points, and if you pass you get -2 points. So you have an incentive to try to predict on as many as you can. The point system doesn't have to just be 5 points, some predictions could be worth 30 points, or 20 points or 10 points or 7 points, etc, etc. Of course, they are also minus in the other direction.
I think if the rules are the same for everybody, and everybody has a even chance, then why not? We just need 33 DP members and somebody will win a free PS3. If we get more members, then maybe we can have more "prizes".
I'll give some examples of questions to predict on, and possible point values for the various questions, etc, etc:
1. Will the Nintendo Wii be priced $199.99 in the U.S. (20 points)(-20 points) (-7 if you pass)
2. Will the Nintendo Wii launch in November 2006 in the U.S.?(20 points) (-20 points) (-7 if you pass)
3. Which console video game will have the highest sales for the month of November 2006 (30 points) (-30 points) (-15 points if you pass)
4. Will 3rd party Playstation 3 games cost $59.99 each? (10 points) (-10 points) (-4 points if you pass)
5. Which next gen console will sell the most units in the USA in November and December 2006? (50 points) (-50 points) (-25 points if you pass)
6. Which handheld game system will sell the most units in November and December 2006? (30 points) (-30 points) (-15 points if you pass)
You know, something like that. Everybody puts their $$ in the pot, we all make our predictions and then we kick back and watch the point totals.
Yea or Nay?
