At the markets this morning I found a copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for SMS. It's shrinkwrapped. I'd just like to know if SMS games were ever actually sealed to begin with?

I always thought they just had those SEGA stickers on the side.

If it's a re-seal, I don't mind - I only paid $3 for it anyway and it's quite minty nonetheless. :-P

I think your correct. They would have to have SOME type of sealing on them, or they would be to easy to open and have someone steal them.

The answer to your question is yes. In fact all of their games were sealed upon delivery to the vendor.

I know that US Master System games were shrinkwrapped.

Canadian Master System games on the other hand were not shrinkwrapped, but were sealed with a "sega" sticker.

Don't know about other regions, but it sounds as if the sticker sealing is in Australia as well ;)

Good call, I should have said all US games were sealed.

Due to the poor quality of the sealing, it looks re-sealed to me.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing.

Well, I unwrapped it and yeah, whilst it's in almost new condition, it's not perfect. Some scuffing on the plastic that wouldn't be there if it had been sealed all it's life.

Oh well, it'll replace my rather dumpy looking copy of SMS Sonic 2. :)

Dreamcaster I can tell you that I live in aus and when I bought my
Sonic 2(at release) It came with the Sega Seal and not shrinkwrapped.

I was under the understanding that all SMS Ozisoft releases
where done this way but I am checking with an authority
on all things SMS Aussie related and will chase an anser for
you tomorrow.

I'm pretty sure all SMS games released here came like that. I've got quite a lot with the Sega seals on them (broken of course, but the two remaining halves are still there).

The re-sealing did look dodgy, although I probably would've unsealed eventually anyway. I don't understand the appeal of sealed games. :P

Or you know....ebayed it.

US games were shrinked, Euro & Australian ones weren't.

That Sonic 2 will just have been shrinked by a games store at some point.

all of the new SMS games I got as a kid were sealed with the little hang tag up and out so it could be hung on the racks behind the electronics counter. I got most of them from the same toy store too.

Earlier this year the toy store closed and was replaced with a chinese buffet. They got pretty good food.

well for thoose still interested I contacted a supplier of mine
here i australia and He used to work for ozisoft.

He stated that ALL SEGA sms distributed games came unsealed
yet some third party releases in australia that they didnt handle
did come shrinkwrapped although very very few, this would
defenitly rule out Sonic 2 :D

Sorry to resurrect an old topic here, but I've actually been curious about the shrinkwrap on SMS games for a long time. Is there a foolproof way to determine if a US SMS game is factory sealed or re-sealed, similar to how you can determine that for NES and SNES games? To my knowledge, the factory seal on US SMS games is usually a very tight wrap and the seal is only at the bottom of the box, with a hole on top (around the hangtab). Can anyone provide more clarity?

Try this again - anyone have any input? I know there are sealed SMS collectors out there.

To my knowledge, the factory seal on US SMS games was usually a very tight and thick plastic wrap and the seal was only at the bottom of the case, with an opening on the top portion around the hangtab. The same can be said for US Genesis games shrinkwrapped from the factories in Japan. However, I do not know exactly how they were reshrinkwrapped in the US if they were redistributed.

I do know that UK SMS games were never shrinkwrapped; they just had the SEGA seal/sticker on the right hand side of the case where you open and close it.
