Wow, that is awesome. I just wish it was more clear, to really be able to see all the games behind the counter. Looks like a Kay-B-Toys. I remember they used to always have certain games marked down with really big stickers on them. Man, what a great time, 1992. Lots of great games available at that time. It bring back some great memories of buying Genny and SNES games and opening them for the first time and being super excited to play some brand new game.

I wish there was more of this type of footage lying around and wish it was clearer to really see things. Kinda suprising that they let this dude bring a camcorder into the store and just start filming shit. They probably wouldn't allow that nowadays I'm guessing.

You know whats funny, is that in the near future, people are going to have High Def camcorders and when they take footage like this, it will be saved for ever in a High Def format and 20 years from now, people will be able to look at a game store with Xbox 360 titles on the wall in perfect clarity!

Cool... but I get zero nostalgia from that since I am an old fart and judging by the amount of Genesis / SNES games, I was already a working engineer and pretty much the same person then as I am now!

In other words, it's probably how you'd feel looking at a video of N64 games on a store rack. :hmm: That scene literally seems like not all that far from yesterday and just a part of the current gaming scene if not only by a few years. I guess the older you get the less things seem to change. x_x

That's true. A dude with a Camcorder back in 1992 was something of an oddity. That's probably why they didn't ask him to turn his camera off, cause they were caught off guard and hadn't had something like that happen to them. I wonder if the date on that Camcorder was correct. Most people have an incorrect date on there. It has to be relatively close though, looking at the games that are on the shelves there.

Hey, E-Swat was only $29.99, what a great deal!! lol.

I saw a Genesis core system in the background. I didn't know Sega had a core system out already by then.

I know there was a core system out for sometime before November of that year because i got a core system and Sonic 2 on "Sonic 2-sday".

I spied "Road Rash" in that video....RR2 was still a few months away from being released.

I remember those times. I also remember checking the backs of certain games like popful mail and Shinning Force CD thinking to myself "eh, I'll get them some other time" a lot of the games that are worth a little change today, I can distinctly remember always looking at those ones in the store and not picking them up. I wish I would have picked up all the saturn games in the bargain bins when it was going off the shelves back then.

That stands to reason. Also, maybe he bought that camcorder that day and was just taking it for a test drive. At least, that seems logical enough.

Talk about a flashback. I distinctly remember all of the hours I spent at malls, blockbusters, and various game stores glaring at video games. I wish I could go to a store these days and see a wall of genesis boxes. Now your lucky enough to find a bin of carts. *sigh*

Exactly. It's cool, but I'm just a bit too old to feel misty and nostalgic (that was my first senior year of college). Ten years earlier, though, would really tug at my heart strings--I'd love to see some footage of all those closeout tables at Kaybee circa 1983-84, and even more than that, some arcade action between 1979-1983.

Still, that's cool for a lot of people, and I'm not doggin' on it.

Same here....

If this were a video of Toys R' Us or Barrel of Fun arcade circa 1982 - then I'd be a helluva lot more sentimental. Being 19 (and a mallrat) In 1992 - I cared a little more about girls than video games.

You know, I was just looking through some old magazines, and I saw an ad from some video game place where they were selling VHS videos of the 1994 Summer CES for like $24.99.

I wonder if any of those old tapes are floating around somewhere? It would be really cool to see video of old CES shows or like the very first e3 shows.

Why Colorado ruled

Here in CO, back in 1992 we ahd a great store called Incredible Universe. It was radioshacks try at a big store.

Anyway the videogame section had SNES, Genny, Sega cd, Jaguar, 3do, 32x, CD-i, and a little later saturn and PS1. But god damn that store was great with all the different systems and large stocks of games.

That was my fav store of all time, they closed about 5-6 months after the PS1 launch :(

Everyone here in CO should remember that store though.[/i]

Reminds me of the time I was browsing through a bin of SNES games about a year after the N64s release or so. I disctinctly remember seeing a mostly purple box with a fancy looking "III" on it for $24.99.

Alas, I was just waiting for a friend to buy something, and in my mind there was no reason to spend money on a super nintendo game now that I had a Nintendo 64.

The things polygons will do to your mind...

Now I try to think with my head, not my analog stick.

Ah, yes...1992. Not a good year for The Pantechnicon. And frankly the contents of this video were a big part of that.

`92 was right about in the middle of my "gaming limbo" years which ran from 1988 to 1994. My Atari 2600 was long gone; taken without my approval. All I had was a Gameboy which I liked well enough but this never served as any sort of extension into the SNES/Genesis era, although it probably should have.

Believe this or not, 2600 and 7800 games and consoles - possibly Intellivision as well - were still available at this time. I can clearly remember being in a ToysRUs in 1992 and weighing whether or not I should buy that 2600 Jr for $40 (I didn't :-() . Commodore 64 was still being offered in the Sears Christmas Catalog, too. In a sense, 1992 was the last year that a lot of retro stuff hadn't quite become "retro" yet, but was being slowly crowded out of the shop spaces by these then-newer systems. That's pretty much how I was feeling: Crowded out by these systems and games that represented an almost alien style of gameplay that I could never fully understand.

This was also the year I got out of the military, into undergrad in a state other than my home one, and into a horrible familial situation. All of this transition, combined with what in my mind amounted to the death of Gaming As I Knew It, led into the longest and worst 18 months of my life.

Worry not. All this maudlin reminiscence is purely subjective. I have since come to appreciate this gaming era more than I did at the time. The Dark Days ended, and now my Sega Fanboy Quotient is second only to my loyalty to Atari. If this video is good nostalgia for some of you then more power to it.

It's not that much different from today.

You still have to read reviews and talk to other people to find out what games are good and which suck.

The internet has just replaced the magazine (for reviews) and meeting at school/with friends has been replaced with forums e-mails and IM's.

That's pretty much how I was feeling: Crowded out by these systems and games that represented an almost alien style of gameplay that I could never fully understand.

1992 is interesting to me for those reasons. I could still go into Babbage's and buy Amiga games. The 64 and the 2600 were still around, although they were fading fast. I actually remember going into a K-B in 1992 with a friend, going to the back of the store, and paying 75 cents for a NIB 2600 Asteroids cart. I wish I knew where that was now.

1992 was the year I turned 18. There were other things going on in life besides video games. When I get nostalgic, I definitely think further back. For me, 1982 was the pinnacle, 1983 was good, but it was mostly downhill from there until after I graduated college. I think the "best year" for gaming has as much to do with what else we were doing in life as it does with what games we were playing on what systems.

I guess I'm more interested in studying 1992 than reliving it.

^ Interesting thoughts Dave. For me, my best years were 87-95... not surprisingly, NES-GEN-SNES rocked hard those years, and those are 3 of my favorite systems ever. Life was just dandy. I was in my childhood, then by 95 going through puberty. It was just the best time for me. Best friends, endless family friend sleepover parties, endless NBA Jam/Bomberman 4 player sessions (at said sleepovers), crush on the two hottest 5th grader girls in the school, best 5th grade teacher ever, everyone in my family still in their prime, toys, cartoons, WWF Wrestling, Godzilla going through its HEISEI era, I remember the weather being gorgeous-perfect; cloudy lazy Sunday afternoons that you wish would never end, RL Stine's Goosebumps series which me and my best friend Nelson loved.... etc.

Man, life was beautiful during those years.

87-95 were my fav years as well. Steven I would bet we're about the same age because that's how I felt during those times as well.

I remember the gaming wars in my class "SNES vs Genesis" everyday someone coming into school saying they discovered a new code for Nba Jam and Mortal Kombat, renting NES games and talking about how they were.

My life around 6th,7th,8th grade were games, X-files, hockey, baseball, 3 stooges, wrestling and playing baseball.

I remember my uncle bought a genesis and I bought games for it to take to his house to play and I had a SNES. He also had a master system and I had an nes so I was covered in all those areas.

I remember going to Hills and playing SNES display and it's games like Mario Kart, Contra III, NCAA Basketball. I used to make excuses to get there to play Mario Kart before I had it. No pressure from school or a job.

I'd give anything to go back being that age.

1992-1993 was the year/time when i feel my gaming was at its peak. Reading EGM & Gamepro, playing NES, Genesis, and my (then) friends SNES, and renting games every weekend from Blockbuster. Ahh good times, good times.

1992….what a time. I got my SNES in the summer of 1992, along with it Final Fantasy II. I was going into my Freshman year of high school. I would have to say that 1991 to 1994 (possibly 1995) produced some of the best game sever made. There were tons of games to rent and I had tons of time to play them (I bought my own TV at the same time so I had my own private system!).

I too remember getting EGM and Die Hard Game Fan (possibly that came out in 1993) every month (my buddies and I bashed GamePro though….). I couldn’t wait to get each issue, there was no Internet to get info from so my access to the gaming world was limited to magazines. As a matter of fact, my buddy has a picture his mom snapped of my buddy and myself sitting on his porch crowding around a new EGM (taken in1993). He showed it tom me a few months ago and it brought back memories.

oh man the last several replies really hit home with me... I feel like standing up and saying "KUUM BAH YAAAI" haha.

Yup, I was in the 5th grade when I liked those two 5th graders ;)

Aaron, 87-95 I was 4-12, so a bit younger than you my friend. I would love to go back to those years, but more like revisiting it. It IS in my past now, and I wouldn't want to go back "forever." But if there was a time machine where I could relive (or be there in spirit form as an observer at my current age of 22)... man I'd pay a million bucks just to do that.

And yes, BTTF was a great flick (of the 80s... oh man what an era that was) ah man nostalgia can be so strong sometimes... I was just looking at some NES sites and man, what great memories.

smokehouse oh yeah I def. remember reading the magazines. GamePro was hated on in my gaming group as well, lol. I remember my brother's friend, whom we endearingly called Sushi X (for his immense love of SF2/all things 2D fighting) he used to go to supermarkets with me, my bro and our mom, mom would be buying food as we're in the mag section. Me and bro are reading the "free" mags out in the open. But some had the plastic wrapper on you recall.

Well, Sushi X, every time, unrelentingly, without mercy, picked that issue up, ripped the cover off, and proceded to sit down and read that magazine.

Me and bro would look on like UH UNH HE DIDN'T JUST DO THAT! :eek 2:

LOL

87-95.... times when internet was either non existent or in its infancy. We relied on magazines and friends to know what's what. And remember RENTING video games? Oh man. I'm gonna stop, this is too much of a nostalgia wave, but man are we ridin' it! :)

Yea I'm 24 so It's weird too how I can remember some things like yesterday and others I cannot.

My buddies also shoot the bull about the old days. I remember my one buddy and I would have a Mario marathon and try to beat all 3 in one day but either we couldn't or we'd give up.

We'd play homerun derby and the ball would always go on the roof of people's houses.

I want a shirt that says "Old Days"

Wow this brings back alot of memories. I remember going to the local Toys R Us (now RIP), and looking at the beautiful Saturn graphics. I distinctly remember seeing the game Knights or Nights (I forget how it's spelled) and being blown away by the 3D graphics. Before that I remember seeing that TG-16 and looking at bonks adventure. There was a Hills store that had a gigantic wall of NES games back when I was young, that was always a great site, and a fun trip

Those were the days, we didn't have a fancy Wal-mart back then, had to travel a bit for a good selection
