EDIT: Only a couple days after the 2.6 firmware version of Devhook was released, a 2.71 one comes out. Now 1.5 PSP's can officially do EVERYTHING!

PSP homebrew keeps getting better and better. Today a new version of the Devhook was just released that allows you to launch v2.6 firmware on your 1.5 PSP! This is great news for people who want to play current games and be able to use the current OS features without giving up the ability to play homebrew on their PSP.
Of course it also allows you to play ISO's too (but that would be wrong). I love it because now I can finally watch my Rock 'n Roll High School UMD that requires 2.6 to run. :P Best part is that the firmware is loaded directly from your memory stick and NOT the PSP's flash memory, so you don't have to worry about bricking your PSP if something goes wrong.
Read all about it here:

Ouch. There is still hope for you though. A couple weeks ago someone released a downgrader for 2.5/2.6 firmwares. From what I hear, 2.7 is a tough nut to crack but if they can do 2.5 & 2.6, I wouldn't be surprised if 2.7 follows soon.

The LocoRoco game only need 2.6 apparently, so this might be a way for me to play the game and not give up my 1.5 firmware :)

This says you need 2.7 (http://www.pro-g.co.uk/news/25-04-2006-2643.html) I never really pay attention to the stuff I upgrade...I am sure it's 2.7 though. :roll:
Meh...I didn't enjoy the demo anyway. :(

You can actually run LocoRoco on your PSP with the older 2.5 firmware version of Devhook. Got it on my PSP right now. You just gotta rip the ISO and replace some of the .prx files in it with ones from a 2.7 game.

Downgrader, here I come. 8-)
Just hope I can play NCAA without upgrading, but I'm not holding my breath. :roll:

This is the easiest way to do it. Download a pre-made Devhook pack with all the necessary firmware files here:
http://rapidshare.de/files/25483108/Devhook_0.43_2.60.rar.html
Open that up and put the 2 folders inside the MS_ROOT folder (dh and PSP) on root of your memory stick. Once those are on, launch Devhook and make the following settings in the Devhook menu:
UMD MOUNT = ISO ANYUMD
UMD VERSION = 2.xx -> 2.00
FIRMWARE = 2.6
CPU CLOCK = any
BOOT SELECT = reboot XMB
OTHER - PRELOAD address = 0x88E00000
After that, press start and 2.6 should launch. If you want to go back to 1.5, just reset your PSP.

So wait a minute. Last time I checked, I was screwed because I had a 2.0 PSP. So I can downgrade that now??? If so, and I can boot 2.6 from the memory stick, then there will be a downgrading party at casa de Jibba tonight.

Oh yeah, you can definitely downgrade to 1.5 from 2.0. It's actually been possible for a while now. I've done it for a couple friends when they got their Gigapacks for christmas and it's real easy. Just make sure you follow the instructions CAREFULLY and put all the right files in the appropriate places.
1.5 is great

But this still uses the GTA exploit right? So if I don't have that game then I can't do it... Correct?

You mean the 2.0 downgrade? No, it doesn't use the GTA exploit. You just need to download a couple files and put them in certain spots on your memory stick. It's all explained here:

yeah, i downgraded from 2.60 back to my lovely 1.5 (i gave up 1.5 to play mmpu) now im loving my psp the way i used to! and to all those that need gta to downgrade- do what i did, rent it! and theres a way to tell if its the gta you need, as it was patched later this year so that a exploit cannot be used..

I want to downgrade mine from 2.6, but I'm kinda lost on the Downdater's instructions. It tells me that I need someone to pass me a FW1.50 folder that the program has complied for use in the downgrading process. Is that something I can find online somewhere? Is downloading a dump of 1.50 going to suffice? I really don't want to risk bricking my system.

There are a lot of places online that have pre-made downgrade packs with the 1.5 firmware already included. Just search around and you'll find one. Try the PSP-Hacks forums and look for the big thread on the 2.5/2.6 downgrade. I'd bet money someone posted a Rapidshare download link with the 1.5 firmware in there somewhere. Usually someone always does when a firmware hack like this comes out.
You'll of course need GTA to do the 2.5/2.6 downgrade too. Just make sure you get an older copy because it looks like new ones have the exploit removed.

Funny you say that, Oob. Devhook 0.44 was released today with full 2.71 support!
See my post at the top of the thread for info. For those that don't know, 2.7x firmware adds Flash viewing capabilities to the PSP web browser. Can't wait to try it out! I'm loading it up on my PSP right now. :P

Now NCAA Football will be no obstacle for me. I just need a bigger memory card, since I'm still using the 32MB pack-in one. :embarrassed:

If the last time you checked this wasn't possible, you're waiting *way* too long between checks my friend. I had a 2.0 PSP and downconverted *months* ago.
Lesson learned for anyone interested in this stuff: check often! You never know what you're gonna miss!
(As a matter of fact, I was pleasantly suprised to see a new Atari 8-bit emulator was available as well when I saw this stuff happening. Star League Baseball, here I come!)

I assume you bought it as a 2.0 and then upgraded it for playing a game?
Another lesson learned for others out there though - do *not* upgrade your firmware if you're thinking of doing this stuff eventually! Stay where you are and the hackers will catch up eventually.
