I just beat the later but what's the difference between them if any?

Well, I've only played the DC original, but it seems they added a few things.

All the extras that were unlockable by going online with the DC are already available, such as the extra island and giant Looper.

The random battle rate has been dropped a fair bit, from what I understand.

Extra character - Piastol the Pirate Hunter.

That's as far as I know, anyhow.

Supposedly DC has better music, but the GameCube version is considered the best. It has the added "moonfish" sidequest that adds quite a bit backstory. Also when you're defeated in a boss battle instead of "game over, return to your last save" you can just retry the battle. And the Dreamcast version supposedly has a higher encounter rate.

Interesting thread - I was wondering this myself.

I've got the DC version - is it worth getting the GC version?

Only if you really want to replay the game again. It's improved yes, but it's still the same exact game.

Honestly, I didn't notice a difference between the random battle rate between the two versions. In either one it pretty much cycled between too often and not often enough, never hitting a really firm middleground.

The gamecube version is fantastic, unless you absolutely have to have VGA or compoenent output at a reasonable price. The controller is much more comfortable for the game on the Gamecube and all of the extras that you wouldn't be able to have anymore on the DC version are unlocked from the get-go.

The GC version is also a tad easier to go along with the decreased battle rate. At least thats what I think. I was playing it and following along in a guide for the dreamcast version and it said "you should be around level 34 or so for this boss" and i was around 26 and did it fine.

edit: though maybe the guide writer over leveled...

If anyone's interested, there is a DC homebrew utility disk available that contains saves/dl content for loads of games.

It included, amongst many others, the 3 SoA d/ls to unlock the extras. Hurrah.
