I know that out in the world, there are a ton of various knock off NES systems. Some even resebling Ps1 (http://nesworld.com/pirate/mplay-1.jpg). Some look actually pretty neat (http://nesworld.com/pirate/asahi1b.jpg).
Now, I know the NES hasn't been around for quite some time. By now, technology is a billion times more powerful than this age old system.
In the future, do you think there will be bootleg Xbox/PS2s/Gamecubes or possibly, one of those systems on a chip?
Think about how advanced video games will becoming 20-30 years from now. It's almost unimaginable.
When do you were playing pong, or donkey kong, could you comprehend all the American FPS or RPGs that we have now? I'm pretty sure it wasn't even a twinkle in someone's eye.

In 20 or 30 years? Sure, it'll be possible. You've got two issues, one is a chip that will be powerful enough to emulate those systems, and the other is storage space. Modern PSX emulators can use ISO images instead of actual CDs and I'd assume someday in the future Xbox/PS2/GCN emus will do the same. The other thing it'll need is storage. I have a 4 gig USB drive hanging from my ID badge right now so in 20 years how much space will be in portable storage? A lot, I'm guessing.

The other issue is that if it's truly a bootleg, someone has to reverse-engineer the original technology first. We don't even have reliable Saturn emulation in software yet; who is to say that any of the current systems will have technology easily duplicated by would-be bootleggers?

Thread moved into Modern Gaming, where it belongs way more than off-topic.

Oops sorry, I was unsure where this topic fit in. Thanks though!

I would think that XBox emulation/pirate systems could be closer than many of the other current gen stuff, if only due to the similarities to off-the-shelf computer hardware. GC, DC, X360, PS2 -- not so much, I think. But give it 25 years, sure.
The question is if anybody will care or not. Looks like in the near future game delivery will move if not primarily then at least somewhat to online or non-physical media delivery. The Wii's online back catalog may condition people to playing older games on current hardware (yes, I know it has been done extensively with DC, PS2, and XB, but it's still not really a 'mainstream' thing but more of a hack) -- legally -- so if in 30 years the latest consoles have the ability to DL and play what's current gen now, there may not be much of a demand for pirate consoles.
NES has been highly pirated hardware for a variety reasons -- the patents either expired or were non existant, and the games were super popular just about everywhere... I don't think any console since then has been pirated as much....

i doubt it - im not to sure that this gen would have a large enough retro following in the future
a bootleg xbox would probbaly be easy to make but I doubt there would be a bootleg ps2 unless somone at sony leaks the info about the chips
i wouldnt be surprised to see bootleg all in one systems though -- like nes , snes , genesis, tg16 combo with 500 games
