Hey everybody,
About an hour ago, the last game I needed to complete the NES library arrived. I'm absolutely beaming with joy at the moment because I've put so much time and effort (and money) into completing this and it's finally done.

Originally, I had completely planned on complete a loose cart collection. However, half way though I started to pick up boxes cause I thought that they looked cooler on my shelves. I eventually plan on getting a CIB collection, but that might not be for a few years because I plan on moving on to other consoles right now (SMS, 32X, N64 and SNES). But getting all the boxes/manauls will always be in the back of my mind though my travels, so I might just pick them up here and there as I go along.

Anyways, here are some brand new pictures of my complete NES collection.

Overview of the shelves that hold all my NES games (and a few boxed SNES and SMS games).
I have about 300 and some boxed NES games. The rest are loose.

Highlights:

Caltron 6-in-1 and (unforunately), a loose Cheetahmen II

I'm not really sure why I took a picture of this. I guess it just stands out more than some of the other things I have. Complete Dragon Warriors 2, 3 and 4

Also, (if you can believe it), I kept a record of every single person that I've bought a NES game off of from this forum. I did this because I predicted that on this day, I would want to thank all the people who had helped me reach my goal.

The list is in somewhat of an order, where the people who helped me out the most are at the top of the list (and the people who sold me 1 or 2 games are at the bottom of the list). But nonetheless, THANK YOU ALL!

Great job! How long did it take you to complete the entire collection?

Originally, I had completely planned on complete a loose cart collection. However, half way though I started to pick up boxes cause I thought that they looked cooler on my shelves.

Doesn't it always start out like that.

Somehow me wanting a few select genesis games I use to rent has turned into trying to get a complete collection.

Do you play all those games?

I have yet to play anywhere near all of them. I fully intend to play all of them someday.

But how come you didn't also pose personally with the Panesian set? ;)

That picture is too explicit to post

but the real question is which one is your favorite to play?

Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
I grew up playing those games and they were virtually what got me back into video game collecting to begin with. Still, the most fun games for me to play.

Great job! How long did it take you to complete the entire collection?

It only took me a year and a half to complete. :D. I was very lucky on a lot of things, though.

Question: What game was the most expensive? I assume Stadium Events, but just making sure.

Question: What game was the most expensive? I assume Stadium Events, but just making sure.

Actually, to add to this, I think an occassion such as this deserves a whole list of stats. What was the most expensive game? What is your favorite game to *have* in there (not necessarily to play)? What game has the best story behind obtaining it (and what is that story)? If unique from the previous, what was the luckiest find/score along the way? Were any big trades made to score some of the rarer carts?

Share some more stories of the journey to get there - I think that's the most interesting part!

Congratulations, Jumpman! I can only imagine what it's like to put the last game on that shelf, and then to stand back and just admire everything for the first time. :) Thanks for the thread and pics! The more I see feats like this, the more driven I am to have a big collection.

The Dragon Warrior series is definately on my list. How much did those complete Dragon Warriors set you back?

Congrats! :) Which game did you recive today, that was the last you needed, Myriad?

Jumpman Jr.
07-10-2006, 06:20 PM
That's it? Wow, a collection like that I would've thought to take a bit longer.

Yeah. One reason why it went so fast was because I had a lot of money to blow on NES games. Since January, I think I spent on average over $1,000 per month just to finish off the last few hundred games that I needed.
Also, I was able to get a tremendous amount of help from CanadianZombie and albailey (hence why they are on top of my list of “thanks”). CanadianZombie had 400 or something carts when I only had about 200 about a year ago. He ended up getting out of NES and I got a whole lot of stuff off of him. Albailey (who is also very close to completing a NES collection now), helped me out a lot as well because he would buy big lots of NES stuff off of ebay and sell me whatever he already had.

Question: What game was the most expensive? I assume Stadium Events, but just making sure.

Good question.
Well, I have to admit that I have absolutely the best parents in the entire world. They actually bought me a copy of Stadium Events as (my one and only) Christmas gift this past Christmas. Here’s a general run-down on what I spent (in US dollars):
Hot Slots (sealed): $725
Myriad: $660
Bubble Bath Babes: $550
Peek A Boo Poker: $550

What is your favorite game to *have* in there (not necessarily to play)?

The sealed Hot Slots has a real place in my heart. Because of the fact that there is probably only a handful of people (I only know one other person) that have it sealed, it’s pretty nice to have.

What game has the best story behind obtaining it (and what is that story)

Hmmm… I don’t know, really. I was actually able to get all the games without much of a problem. Stadium Events was pretty cool simply because I got it for Christmas. Oh! I know. When I found my OWN copy of Bart vs. The Space Mutants at a pawn shop. By “my own copy”, I mean I used to own the game back in the day, and sold it off. Now it’s back to the original owner with my last name still written on the cart

what was the luckiest find/score along the way?

I didn’t really have any lucky “scores” really. I think the luckiest thing that happened to me was the fact that when I was about 50 games from completion, wrldstrman was about 50 manuals away from having all the manuals/boxes or whatever. So, he’d pick up complete copies of games to replace his loose ones, and sell me the cart he didn’t need. I was really lucky with that. He helped me out a lot.

Were any big trades made to score some of the rarer carts?

I actually bought every single game in the library I believe. There could have been maybe 1 or 2 games that I traded to get, but if there was, I don’t remember them.

Congratulations, Jumpman! I can only imagine what it's like to put the last game on that shelf, and then to stand back and just admire everything for the first time. :) Thanks for the thread and pics! The more I see feats like this, the more driven I am to have a big collection.

The Dragon Warrior series is definitely on my list. How much did those complete Dragon Warriors set you back?

You have no idea. I’m actually more relaxed now than I’ve ever been in a long while.
As for the Dragon Warrior series; if you added it all up, it would probably have cost me $200 or something. Maybe a little bit more.

All those NES games... and so few SMS games :(

As a matter of fact, I actually almost have a complete boxed SMS collection. I’m currently missing 8 boxed games to complete it (and will hopefully be completing it within a month or so). Here’s a picture that I like that I took of some of my games:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y68/JumpmanPOE/sms.jpg

Congrats! :) Which game did you recive today, that was the last you needed, Myriad?

Yep, the Myriad was the last game I needed, and it came today.

Yup, congrats jumpman, very nice. How much % would you say came off eBay?

Also, I think it's cool you wrote down every DP member you bought stuff from. About 5 months ago I made a topic here at DP wondering if anyone else keeps a running log or tab of their game buying? I have a log of my SNES purchases which began 7 months ago, writing down who I buy from, where, when, how much, any juicy stories behind it, etc. It doesn't take up a WHOLE LOTTA time, but put it in a binder and read it one day say, a year from now, man it's gonna be sweet. It's so worth it, esp. if you buy a lot.

So, now that you've completed your NES set, what's next for you?

BTW, I too have a lot of NES games I have yet to play/test... are you, like me, somewhat worried that you may find out later some aren't working and that rubbing alcohol can't save it? For the most part rubbing alcohol is a God-send but I found a few SNES games where the contacts looked mint, yet it refused to work, even after Rubbing Alcohol was applied. I hope that won't be the case for you.

I know it's hard to test each game though, because you're getting so much in it's too fast a clip. Also, I dunno about you but I like to play a game to play it, to me testing it and turning it off -- I can't get into that any more. I have to sit there, watch the intro, and act as if I am ready to PLAY THROUGH the entire game. I only hope, as I said earlier, that all my games will prove to be 100% working.

Yeah, that's a real cool story about the simpsons cart :D

Neat that your parents bought you SE too. I can recall my own parents buying me a run of 50 or so 1970s Iron Mans back when I was younger and I collected comics and even though I'm scared they probably overpaid it was pretty cool of them to do.

Congrats on the set !!

07-10-2006, 07:53 PM
re CIB games, I'm not too surprised about that... having collected one thing or another for so long, I knew when I started collecting video games that I would eventually care about condition - which is why I rarely buy loose carts. A tattered loose ex-rental doesn't look like much against a mint in box complete, although there is definitely something to be said for the affordability of loose carts. Better start looking for that myriad box and instructions! :)

Thanks to all who have congratulated me thus far.
To answer some more of your questions:

Yup, congrats jumpman, very nice. How much % would you say came off eBay?

I’d say somewhere in the range of 1%. Actually, it’s probably less than that. I got the Myriad off ebay, as well as maybe 3 or 4 other semi-rare ones. Oh yeah, Cheetahmen II came off ebay as well.
So 5 out of 772 isn’t too shabby.

So, now that you've completed your NES set, what's next for you?

I think I’ve answered this before, but a lot of people seem to be asking me this, so I’ll write it again. I’m currently 8 games away from a complete SMS collection and 2 games away from a complete 32X collection, so I want to finish off those two first.
Then, it’s been my dream (even before I started collecting NES), to have a complete NES, SNES and N64 collection, I just never thought it would be possible. So, I’m going to try to complete the SNES (already have 200 games) and N64 libraries (already have 100 boxed games).

Haha pretty sweet that you found your own cart :) How many years had it been in the wild?

We must have sold it back in the early 90’s or something like that.

Where did your parents find the Stadium Events cart?

8bitnes (a member on DP) was selling one. I told him to e-mail my parents.

They do take up alot of space! Congrats looks great. I am going for a boxed collection myself but i am done with my SMS and 32X many years ago. I have been working on my boxed NES collection for about 10 years and for the most part only have above average boxes. Only over the last 6 months have I gone on a big push to finish. I need about 30 more boxes to finish! Many people on your list are people who I have sold to and done trades with :D

Jumpman Jr.

I'm curious what caused you to start your videogame collection?

I had surgery on my foot and couldn't walk for 2 weeks (2 years ago). So I decided to pull out my old NES, SNES and N64.
That is (as I sometimes tell people), how the madness started.

Are you going to go after NES accessories as well or gonna concentrate on games from other consoles?

Meh, NES accessories have never had a place for me. They are cool to have, but I'm not going for them at full force or anything like that.

Awesome! @_@ Congratulations!

Relatively common games that are REALLY hard to find (off the top of my head):

Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt
All the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons games
Die Hard
Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle & Friends
Cowboy Kid
Motor City Patrol
Sqoon

Those are very deceptive. Whenever I see a 'wanted NES list' of somebody's they are always looking for those games. If you are looking to complete a set, don't pass up those games if you find them in the wild.

None of the rare games were THAT hard to find (considering). Naturally, I had to resort to ebay a couple of times, and all the others were from member's of DP.
Within the last 6 months of completing the collection, I just bought 1 really rare game a month or something, and eventually ended up with all of them.

I go by the US released DP guide for what I think constitutes a complete NES collection (minus NWC of course). Sachens don't count for me. I don't have a viable reason why, other than most people don't consider them part of a complete collection either.
I got my loose Cheetahmen off of ebay. I'm looking for a box for it though. Ugh, we'll see.

Because the box spells it "Cheetahmen." I don't know why there is a difference between the box and the sticker on the cart.

@Hounder - Yeah, I know. I was talking to him about the box he has. 8-)
And to where I found my sealed Hot Slots: I was directed to a guy who was selling one over on gametz (which I am not a member of, that is just where he was advertising his sale).

very cool, congratulations. however, there is something to be said for getting a complete collection without spending tons of money on it. I think that is the real challenge. $1000+ per month, I can't even magine. No wonder it only took you a year and a half. For me it will be that much sweeter getting a complete collection having not spent a dime. I've still got about 300 games to go, but so far so good!

Don't knock em too hard.

There is something to be said for working for the deal. You will find games for cheaper if you try hard enough. However, the days of finding ALL the titles for $5 or less are over. Your better off hitting the lottery window as the odds and the stakes are better. Keep track of the hours per game and the dollars per game.

Everyone's time is worth something. At some point its in your favor to bite the bullet and pay the price if you want to complete the collection for the last few titles.

Exactly.
It took a LOT of time out of my day, every day, to be scavenging the internet for anybody that had something I needed for sale. Once you get down to the last 100 (or the last 50) and so on, they just start getting impossible to find, and when you finally do see them, you don't want to let them get away. That's when you have to start paying the price.

@ -hellvin-, of course I remember buying stuff off of you. That was actually pretty recently as I recall (within the last few months of me completing it). I'm racking my brain to try to figure out what I bought from you as well, but I can't think of it. Gemfire might have been one of them, but I'm not sure.

Congrats on the great collection and I was happy to help!

You (mainly) and many others here at DP helped fund my trip to Africa. Although it was a memorable experience i am very sad that most of my collection that i worked so hard on over the past 5 years is now gone. I am however quite happy that a big chunk went your way and is now part of a larger collection

Complete collections like this motivate me to start up again....

one day, one day.

awesome man! im at the point now, too, that i have to start just buying off of ebay and paying retail for games. im down to 30 NES games needed after 5 years of collecting, with the heavy hitters still unaccounted for. i just cant bring myself to drop that much on a few games...maybe when theyre the only 6 or 7 i have left...

are you complete with major variants too? (like the impossible mission II games and both last crusades, etc.)

good luck on SMS, SNES and n64!

I believe so. It’s been a while since I’ve checked. I think I remember picking up some of the major variations a while back.

Well done! You WIN!!

It isn't often we see actual NES completes so now you are one of VERY few people on the planet to say, "I have every NES game ever released to stores."
