i've been collecting games for awhile now and systems for even longer but i have to admit i've never given alot of thought to display quality. i have 3 tv's with systems hooked up and the newest is at least 3 years old and everything uses composite red/white/yellow a/v connections. I have to say though, after cruiseing the forums lately i'm starting to feel like i'm in the display stone age, VGA box, HDTV, aspect ratios, S-video, red/blue/green component ????

thing is i never noticed a huge picture quality jump between coaxel and composite and i have known of S-video for awhile but never acually seen anything played through it. i hear the quality of these connections is 20% + better starting with S-video and lately i'm feeling like i'm missing out on a much better gameing experence useing older A/V connections, unfortunitly i'm quite poor and as much as i would love a $2,000 HDTV with all the bells and whistles its just way out of my means. can anyone reccommend a good quality TV for under $500 (but the cheaper the better). i know you can't have your cake and eat it to with this but what should i make a priority? HD or better A/V connections like S-video and R/B/G? should i just buy a TV with a VGA connection or would i be better off getting a computer monitor and a VGA box? i'm not looking for a huge screen but alot of the smaller tv's i've seen lack decent A/V connections. and finally is it really worth it? is the quality that much better?

oh, and i plan to use the tv for retro and modern gameing so i suppose something with a variaty of A/v selections would be best

at first i didnt notice a diference between the formats either

untill down gradeing - get used to component for a while and then go back to RF - im sure you will see a huge difference. When i do that - it seems like my vision becomes blurry.

you can find a tv with component inputs at walmart for around 200$

some months ago i picked up a 27" RCA tv with all the inputs and a 3line comb filter for 180

I actually did this, and I'm enjoying it.

Don't feel bad at all dude. I'm still playing all of my systems on a 27" RCA that's well over 20 years old. How archaic is it? Well.. on the back there are four plugs: a coaxial plug; a red & white RCA for stereo (Hey! it's got stereo!), and a yellow for video.

I started buying s-video cables for all my newer consoles years ago.. never got a chance to use even THOSE yet! Quite frankly.. the games come first and the TV comes second.. or third.. or..

The old RCA still has a nice, bright, sharp picture and I have yet to find a RPG or strat that I can't read the text on. So there ya' go. My friend wants to sell me his 20" flat screen LED real cheap but I keep putting him off because if I'm gonna' upgrade.. it would be stupid to go smaller.. no matter how much sharper the picture is. Beyond Good & Evil and Mechassault still look awesome on my old antique so I'm OK for now.

I've decided my next TV is going to be the biggest CRTV I can still find. I don't even have a flatscreen picture tube, so that's a definite must. But I need to hurry as I'm beginning to think that tube TVs are going to go the way of the DoDo in a few years.

If you want a nice HDTV for fairly cheap get a CRT. I just got a Samsung 30" widescreen slimfit and I love it. Moveis and games look SO much clearer in HD.

If you don't want to spend $800, go with the 27" slimfit model, which is also HD and has 2 HDMI inputs and 2 component I believe.
