A Group of friends of mine have had a LAN Party group for several years known as LAG, Over those years many parties were held and the group was a growing success.

About a year and a half ago, due to communications break downs, work and all other things life throws at you LAG for the most part ceased activity. However this past weekend the founder of LAG came to me and said he wanted to try to bring it back, but this time wanted to add consoles as well and have the first "new" LAG gathering to be Classic Gaming.

Now he has the PC side taken care of with Doom II among others, but he needs me to head the console effort. Currently I have a Genesis, PSone, PS2, N64, Jaguar, a Nintendo with no cabling or controllers (hope to be resolving that). I also have a friend that will be bringing a GameCube. Not a lot of stuff to work with, but we are starting off small just to see if we can get this going again.

What I need from the DP is advice what games are crucial to the console effort? If I could get a hold of another console before then what should I aim for? I have never really been to a console gaming fest (I have seen footage) is there anything that I need to be prepared for?

As always I appreciate any wisdom and advice that can be offered. When we get the date set, I will post notification in the events forum. Also for those wondering what LAG is it stands for Lynchburg Area Gamers (in Lynchburg, VA).

goldeneye and mario kart for the 64 were my personal favorite party games back in the day. contra for the nes is also a good memory as far as multiplayer, though it will only take 2.

My advice is; don't overdo it. You'll be tempted to set up every console and game you can get your hands on, but most likely everyone will play the same 2 or 3 games all night.

i've always thought the N64 was the multiplayer party console of choice. Goldeneye, Mario Kart are always excellent. And then you can bring out Smash Bros and amybe some other games like F-Zero and Mario Tennis which are both great fun 4-player. Of course a Bomberman game is always good.

Whatever you have, the right games will always go down a treat. Just make sure you bring the multiplayer games out and you definitely need to be able to play them at least 4-player so only a console with 4 ports unless u have multitaps at the ready.

Bust out the N64 with Mario Party, Mario Kart, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Bust-A-Move, F-Zero ect. You'll be good to go! Most other systems will require multi-taps so unless you have those you have too many people standing around waiting to play.

If you want to wonder back to older computer games then Starcraft, Warcraft II, Total Annilation, Diablo II, Age of Empires II, Cossacks series, Doom95, Unreal, Quake, Command & Conquer, Rune, and so forth.

I host LAN parties on the last Saturday of every month and it's quite successful once people get use to the fact that it's going to happen regardless of if they show up and there'll always be at least a few others there too. We don't touch the consules much because I turn on my 24-port switch and everyone is up and running.

Thanks for all the tips so far, I ironically do not have many multi-player N64 games. I am going to have to hunt those down for sure.

I will mention some of the computer game suggestions to the computer guys.

If anyone on the DP is near the Lynchburg, VA area and would like to help feel free to PM me. Right now we are looking at Aug. 19 at the Ramada.

I have never played a saturn, but I love bomber man.

I am going to have to look into getting a saturn it seems.

One thing I am wondering, outside of multiplayer games, do you think there would be any success in having a high score contest, or maybe a speed run through a stage of a game? I would like to give people that do a lot of single player a chance for challenges as well.

Well, the MN crew over @ Neo-Geo.com get together 2 times a year, and the popular games have been Twinkle Star Sprites, Magical Drop 3, Mark of the Wolves. Keep in mind this was a Neo gathering. We also break out the DS for multiplayer Tetris and some MarioKart. Saturn Bomberman was played this year and that was a hit. Games like Taiko Drum Master and Guitar Hero are no brainers. Oddly enough in the 6 years we've done it, we've never played anything obvious like Smash Brothers or Mario Party.

The Genesis has a few 4-player titles that you could feature, as long as you have either type of multi-tap:

- Mega Bomberman
- Gauntlet IV
- General Chaos
- NBA Jam Tournament Edition

Regarding a Classic Gaming Party, I've been wondering the same thing. I've had luck getting people together to play Doom II, and have had a lot of luck with Scorched Earth, but I've yet to try to combine classic PC gaming with classic console gaming, but have been considering doing so. I'd be very interested to hear how well this concept works for you all.
