View Full Version : About NES 72 pins, oxidation and gold...

So you see these replacement 72 pins all over eBay and such -- are they worth it? I mean, if you want to revitalize your old-school deck and refuse to convert to the re-design, then what's the best way to accomplish this without getting ripped off? Are the gold pins floating around any less prone to oxidation? I'm all ears.

There are quite a few threads on this already...do a search.
The short version is this:
1. It's cheaper and normally a better option to just take your existing connector out and refurb it. It only takes like 30 min. Look for other threads on how to do it
2. While the chemical properties of gold do make it less prone to oxidation, most of the "gold" connectors are actually brass and are very cheaply made. Oxidation is only a small problem with the connectors. The major problem is pin-bending. Generally, the cheap eBay ones bend easier and therefore "break" much quicker.
