i got an itch tonight for adventure island and decided to hook up my NES. it is the official nintendo top loading model. so it's all hooked up and when i turn it on, i get this black and white screen. it's not the AC adapter or RF. so obviously the thing is broken. if anyone knows what the problem here is or how to fix, it please help

It may very well be either the game, the AC adapter, or the RF adapter. Exactly how did you determine they aren't the problem?

well i used the same ac and rf on another system with the same cart and they worked fine. ergo, the problem is the system. yes, i learned that word from phoenix wright so what.

You need to clean the ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) connector inside the NES. The lazy way to do it is to apply some rubbing alcohol to the connector of a cartridge with a cotton swab, then insert and remove the cartridge a few times, wait for the magic of evaporation, and then try again. If that doesn't get things working then the ZIF connector pins have worn down / been bent away from their cartridge meeting points due to use / age.
