i just borrowed my nieces ds for a few hours and i was playing the new super mario bros game , it kinda got me thinking , why don't they make good side scroller games for home consoles anymore , i mean a new sonic or mario or gouls and ghost would totally be awesome, i for one would love for classic side scrollers to come back to the home consoles

Viewtiful joe is a decent side scroller even though it's environment rotates sometimes in 3D.

I am starting to see less and less flat sprites. Eventually, it'll going to be all in the third dimention. Wait....it pretty much is already...

Good God yes! The main reason that I love classic gaming is that I love 2D games, and side-scrollers in particular. There are some good 3D side scrollers, but not many. With the death of the GBA, I fear we may finally see the end of the 2D SS era.

mann i miss 2D SSs soo much. New SMB is awesome. I have high hopes for Super Paper Mario. My first game was Super Mario World for the SNES and made me fall in love with video games. To see Side scrollers die would be like losing a member of my family.

Man, I love side scrollers. I hope they never die. I pretty much grew up on Megaman. The Super Nintendo had a ton of great side scrolling games that I loved, such as Megaman X, Super Castlevania IV, Xardion, Cybernator; I can go on and on.

They better not die, but if they do, at least we got a ton of em to play.

Related to the generic platformer is the run-gun, and the shump, both of which are highly underlooked by so called 'modern' gamers.

In fact, as most are aware, few shumps have been released over the years for modern consoles at all.

It's a sad state of affairs.

Castlevania for the DS, and another in the works.

A New Ghouls and Ghosts (Ghosts and Goblines), is coming to the PSP this fall...

Gunstar Super Heroes for the GBA. Metroid games on the GBA...the GBA is the new SNES.

I don't really miss them. If I wanted to play a 2D sidescroller like mario then I'd plug in the nes (or snes). I really don't care for sidescrollers all that much except for the Sonic and SOTN style Castlevanias.

Well the GBA is the old new SNES now since it's on the edge of its commercial lifespan.

But you also mention DS and PSP games and I tend to think those will keep coming out, and in future handheld generations, too. Obviously more 3D stuff than on the GBA with current and future handhelds, but I think 2D will always still have a home on handhelds. In arcades, too, (though who knows how long arcades will have a home) which will always mean some now and then console ports.

2D's around. Not as much as it's oughtta be, but it's still here. I foresee that we'll be seeing even more 2D games on newer consoles. 3D is getting too limiting for the really good side of game development like what we'll hopefully be seeing on the Wii, so I think there will be some creative new uses of the 2D viewpoint. It'll be different than the old 2D, though, almost as much as it's different from 3D.

Don't say "shump," it's nonsense.

2d gaming was the reason I bought a DS.

Castlevania DoS was incredible and the sprites are awesome.

If you cannot guess by the handle I totally support what you are talking about.

Well later on I'm going to be making 2D games for the computer with high end graphics, quite a few side scrollers. It'll be some time before then though and should find all the resources by then as well. It's going to be my side goal/project but don't think that'll make it garbage. :P

I hope 2D will come back in full swing with these newer systems because they can harness some badass resolution and banging sprites that could be a rebirth. We'll have to wait and see.

They could have done that this past generation, so I don't see why having even more power will spur them to make 2D games.

If anything can turn the tide, it's the movement over the past couple of years towards "casual" games that aren't too complex or require a ton of buttons, like some of those on Xbox Live Arcade or the Nintendo DS, and flash-based games on computers. With more people playing games, there could be a bigger audience for simpler 2D games.

Since new content is possible on the Wii Virtual Console, I'm hoping for some homebrews on NES, SNES, Turbo, and Genny. I'm sure any developer that wanted to make quality games could do so easily, and 2-D could live forever through that medium.

I miss 2d console side-scrollers. I mean, I like the portables and all, but I really wish the current consoles would get some 2d love. And by 2d, I mean real 2d, with both gameplay and graphics in two dimensions. Although I did enjoy Viewtiful Joe, I want something flat, too. Even shmups are made with 3d graphics now.

Since the year 2000, the only fully-2d games I've seen on consoles are Alien Hominid, the Metal Slugs, and Bangai-O. And I guess Mega Man X6 was 2001, but man did it suck. Hopefully The Behemoth's next game delivers.

Thats one of the reasons why I love my old school stuff. Plenty of sidescrollers. They're great. Super Return of the Jedi, Strider, TMNT, Mutant Apocalyse, Maximum Carnage.

Not only do they need to make more 2d games, but they need to make more games with sprites. With the high quality graphics of today's consoles the sprites would look beautiful.

I almost exclusively play 2D games.

3D is evil and unaesthetic.

Over my Winter Break in January I was thinking the same thing. All I had was a Saturn (with 300+ games) and a Dreamcast. One day in mid-January I was picking out a game from my vast Saturn collection to play. Hey, waitasec, I thought this was the "2D SYSTEM" monster! I looked over my library and really noticed a lack of great 2D side scrolling games.

That got me thinking about where the best side-scrollers reside... SNES/GEN/NES.... and I went on to buy those systems and love them all over again.

Damn straight I do!

Maybe I'm alone in this but 2D sidescrollers just capture my eyes better than 3D free worlds. I mean I really do like seeing breathtaking 3D worlds with ice-capped mountains and such, but I tend to appreciate a highly detailed 2D setting a lot more.

It's 2D but damn... that just looks great!

When the N64 was on display at Wal-Mart, the teaser game in the console was Mario 64. I wasn't terribly impressed like I was when the SNES display enticed me with Super Mario World.

I even miss the old arcade side scrollers. Games like Midnight Resistance, Golden Axe, Sly Spy, and games of that nature were the highlight of my arcade existance.

Again, it's only 2D but the detail is just excellent.

Hell yes I miss sidescrollers. 3D is foreign and unnatural to me. I mean, I could go on about 2D vs 3D but you were all brought up on Nintendo and Sega too, so you know what I'm talking about.

And every time my preference for 2D comes up in conversation, everyone always mentions "Oh, but there's Viewtiful Joe!" Like VJ is the only game I'll ever need. And to tell you the truth, VJ is a cool game and everythig but it really doesn't interest me half as much as loads of 16 bit games I have yet to play do.

Your right, makes me miss playing those games especially at the arcades. WOW, theres a term you don't hear much anymore. Loved playing games like Final Fight and Mercs and all the Metal Slugs. Glad I still have the old systems to play it but it does suck that they don't do many new original ones for the newer consoles. When will they do an update to Streets of Rage or Gunsta Heroes? I know Golden Axe is coming out, hopefully they won't butcher it.

I miss the days of 2d myself. From a business point of view, I can see why game companies are looking to mainly go for 3d because everything must evolve into something different eventually. But with older gamers like some of us here, and classic gaming being a hot ticket now, the game companies are going to catch onto it very soon. Xbox live arcade will keep the tradition going, handhelds will definately keep it going, and every now and again, I have a feeling new console SS games will pop up. Game companies realize whats hot on the market significantly after the buzz has started. The Wii virtual console is Nintendos way of taking advantage of the classic gaming buzz. It is unfortunate, however, that most of the 2d games we've been seeing lately are just updated versions of games we've already experienced. But just think of the sales that New Super Mario Brothers got up till now, that is going to be a hint to game companies that you don't always have to be 3d to make a profit. If nintendo made a gamecube or wii 2d metroid, that would fly off shelves maybe just as fast as NSMB did. If only nintendo were to walk out into a baseball diamond in the middle of a corn field they'd here "if you make them, they will sell."

They did, it's Gunstar Super Heroes. Great stuff. Plus, the Sega Ages Treasure Box is great stuff, too -- nothing new, but still a welcome blast from the past.

2D is great. I've been playing so much Neo Geo lately... The Metal Slugs never get old! I hate calling them old, though -- MS1 was released in, what, 1996?

But there's still alot of great 2D being released, it's just on the GBA and DS. In my mind there's NOTHING wrong with that!!! 2D is great on the go! Plus, 2D shooters.... Man, I gotta stop talking about playing games and go play some games!

I too miss 2D gaming. I agree, the GBA/DS seems to be the last hiding spot to find new/good 2D games. I think the thing that bothers me most about new systems is, with the power these systems had, who knows what cool grapics and ideas you could incorperate into a new 2D game. They'd probably be able to develop the games cheaper than new 3D titles. I don't know if It's just that our voices are too few to get new 2D games. or if it's just better economically for companies to make a crappy 3d game with a liscenced name that every 8 yr old will have and never play. I know it's a buisness, but Sales over quality is what led to the first video gaming crash.

I think 2D games tend to look better than 3D games and I am really hoping for more 2D side scrollers in the future.
