View Full Version : Good Current Co-op Games

It seems like as the years have gone by, lots of games have decided to focus on either the single-player experience or the online multiplayer (or the offline vs. multiplayer), leaving gamers that just want to plow through games with a buddy out in the cold.

What are your favorite semi-current co-op games for 2 or more players (not counting the annual sports updates)? Here's a couple of mine:

- Deathrow (XB)
- X-Men Legends 2 (multi)
- Baldur's Gate series (multi)
- Metal Slug 3, 4, 5 (multi)
- Toejam & Earl III (XB)
- Pikmin 2 (GC, even though you have to unlock it)
- Timeplitters series (multi)
- Halo series (XB)

The lack of LOTS of these games is sort of discouraging, especially when you consider that it can't be all that hard to make a great game in the same vein as Baldur's Gate. Plus, these sorts of hack 'n' slash games give you a break from the constant onslaught of shooters. The Pikmin 2 debacle sort of pissed me off too, since they could have easily made the ENTIRE GAME co-op, but instead reduced it to a challenge mode that you have to play about 3-4 hours into the main game to unlock.

Any other good/great games like these that I'm missing? (keyword: good/great, I left off things like D&D: Heroes and Gauntlet for a reason).

Champions of Norrath and Champions: Return to Arms are both co-op, and both very excellent games.

Dont leave out The Adventure of Cookie & Cream for PS2.
This is one of my all time favorite co-op games.

My friends and I like to play Dynasty Warriors 5: empires for the 360. It seems like people don't really like this game much but my friends and i think its great, I suggest giving it a shot. Also Kameo is a pretty descent co-op game. Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks is pretty cool (haven't spent too much time on it though).

the only reason to get delta force black hawk dowm for xbox is the online game and the 4 player splitscreen co-op. it's like a whole other experience. even though the enemy ai is dumb and the levels are really easy, it's great for partys, definately great for renting.

I heard Halo 3 might be capable of a 4 player co-op mode split screen or through system link. (Over Xbox live isn't possible I dont think)

I think Coop games go like this.

The more players that can play at once, the less it matters if the gameplay is good. Hence Gauntlet.

The less players the more gameplay counts.

Halo already has amazing co op gameplay, it'll be ten times more a blast with 4 players. Think of the possiblities, races, total domniation of legendary. great stuff.

I'd say that's a pretty good formula you've developed there, very true.

As for some of the games mentioned, I've wanted to try out a few, but I don't have a ps2 right now.

Once my main gaming buddy gets back in town we'll have to give Mortal Kombat: Shaoling Monks a go. I would have put the first X-Men Legends down, but one thing kept it from being great: those damned 1-player segments that were unavoidable. It goes from being a multiplayer jam to having one character walk through the X-Mansion for about 30 minutes. Sort of kills the momentum. I'm glad they fixed that for the sequel.

I totally forgot about a couple of those or they might have got a mention. Smash TV is probably the ultimate co-op game. I'd venture to say I've played more co-op Smash TV than I have games like Halo, Baldur's Gate, etc. Hunter the Reckoning was pretty cool, but the only problem was how much they rationed out ammo. It felt like you basically went through the entire game using your weak-ass default gun that took far too long to kill enemies.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Over the Hedge Yes I'm serious!

my gf loved it, you have to like platformers though I loved the movie and I loved the game, imho it is better than lego star wars esp the bumper kart thing

it like a modern day simpsons arcade it even has team up attacks... and lots of cool puzzles not hard but fun and cool action orientated gameplay wouldn't be surprised if it used the xmen legends 2 engine

Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks. Really fun combat system and lots of crazy shit going on. TONS of moves and stuff to upgrade.

Another one that looks great but I havent tried yet is The Warriors. It looks like it could be a great co-op game.
