Has anyone here recently written a new game for an old computer? Does anyone still program on these old beasts? I am currently working on a DOS text game that will hopefully be unveiled soon, but I was wondering if anyone else still tinkers around on these old beasts.

Of course. As a programmer and game designer I deal with several systems and program in a few different languages. My favorite systems to program for are Unix systems, DOS, and Windows. I generally do more developement on SunOS with C++ (using GPP) since that's the dominate language and system in my schools department. I do some coding and scripting for various things as well, but my roots are in BASIC. Of course my skills have gone to higher levels of programming and complexity but when it comes to DOS, it's so easy to use MSBASIC or FORTRAN77 compilers. Never did much with COBOLT or JAVA, but I know I'll have to be using JAVA soon, and since I've look at much code from it it's extremely simple in my tastes.

A DOS text game? As in interactive fiction? There are any number of fine utilities and interpreters for such things available presently.

I'd wager DOS programming is a lot easier than it once was, what with the availability of free tools like Allegro and DJGPP and DOS/32A. Still, no reason not to use Windows if you have the option.

Flack -- I'm in the midst of learning C++ in order to make a flatshade 3D polygonal World War II online computer flightsimulator
with an Apple "Macintosh SE/30" as the development platform.

Then -- being realistic about an Apple "Macintosh SE/30"s computing abilities -- I'll hafta move the "online" part to a "Windows" PC.
It'll be similar to "WarBirds" v2.77 R3

Click here to fly it online > "WarBirds" v2.77 R3 (http://www.wbfree.net/)

But it's still gonna have the look & feel of the Apple computer version.

It'll be called "Eagles Of Honor".

Later!

I've ported games to my Altair (from Dave Ahl's 101 Basic Games). Does that count? I've also ported games from the Altair to my Atari 8-bit and Atari ST. My most recent port from the Altair to Atari 8-bit was a game called Reversi which I did about three months ago.
