I've been building a decent collection over the past months, NES and DC mostly (see link in sig), but I'm wondering how you all decide what in your collections go for keeping and what goes for trading fodder?

Well I think it's quite simple. If you have two of them, one goes in the trade pile.

If you collect only for certain systems, if you have something that isn't for that certain system, it goes in the trade pile.

Now if you collect "quality titles" only, you have a problem, but not a big one. Make EVERYTHING your trade pile - and when something comes along that you like, decide on the spot what you'd be willing to part with to obtain that item. Kind of like ranking your stuff - it doesn't have to be complicated, give everything a rating of 1-5. If a "3" comes along, be willng to part wtih your "4"s and "5"s.

if i get two of a particular game i usually examine and see which one is in better condition and save it for my collection- the other goes to the tradebox

I approach it the same way coin collectors approach it... if you see it, and it's reasonable, buy it..

You can always get a better copy/full copy later, but the important thing is to have first, complete later.. In the mean time, you can enjoy the game, even if it's not complete.

I usually play a game to decide. If I like it...I keep it. If I hate it, it goes in the trade pile. Other than that, I ONLY get rid of duplicates.

I must have 2 in order to trade. Unless I know it is something I can easily replace.

Dups only, I keep the best label whenever possible and toss the rest in a big pile. Now to figure out what to do with a dozen SMB, 2 dozens SMB/DH, a dozen DH, and a dozen Gyromite. LOL I could dump them all at Funcoland but they'd probably only give me $0.01 each.

Thanks guys, I appericate this..this'll come in handy for when I go on finds, invites to gaming nights, etc.

Anyhow, the main things I'm collecting is DC and NES. DC I buy to play mostly unless in a rare case with something. NES to play and collect, many times more to collect depending on how the game is (still have least dozen carts I've gotten I need to test and clean once I get around to trying the NES I traded with Achika).

PSX/PS2 mostly collect to play, N64 not sure what I'm doing yet. Genesis the few carts I have are to play..may pick up some others for collecting or trading fodder later. Atari 2600 I'm mainly after Activision carts..but do have others at father's place (mostly commons) to use if I gotta.

i put doubles, bad condition games, and games for systems i don't collect in my trade box. if i am trying to get an item like a proto or something that i won't have the chance to get again, i trade items straight out of my collection if i know i can easily get the same item back.

That's the great thing....there's no rules man -do it how ya like. I'm one of those that will trade right out of my collection if I see something I'd like better.(and is at least a fair trade). 8-)

So wouldn't really matter if I had a bunch of commons more than uncommon or even rares in a trade pile from different systems?

Your last statement confused me so I went and reread your original question.
I personally put things in a "keep" or "no trade" pile that either I think will have long term dollar value (rarity and people will still want it), or that has sentimental value to me. Like for me the Intellivision is the system I grew up with and love the most, therefore I'd never ever consider trading the system or any of it's games that aren't duplicates. But always remember "One man's trash is another mans treasure". To wit: let's say you're a huge, huge Rygar fan(great game but not all that uncommon) --well maybe you'd give up a rarer game (i.e -an AVE game or a B+ like a Formula one ) for a mint Rygar. That's a great deal for you - but not me If I'm not a Rygar fan (I am). However, Let's say your still a huge, huge Rygar fan -Should you trade a Namco Pacman or a Flintstones 2 for a mint Rygar ----- I think not. Anyways enough of my yackin........ :)

there are always people that need common games, and sometimes a person like me will trade rare things for a bunch of those commons..
i dont know if that was an answer to a question..

Thanks guys..just gotten up to where I want to try to set up trading fodder for future events along with my regular collection so I don't have to part with much at times.

I usually think I have a trader, then I look at it closely and notice a label variation or something different and have to keep it too.
