ok long story short, I ended up with a new psp(2.5 firmware and 2 gig memory stick.
I've heard the system is great for emulation and I've kinda already had fun with the web browser on my home network.
My questions to all would be
1)I want to be able to play NES, SNES, GEN, TG-16, possibly some other games on this thing. I haven't even messed with roms in years. The computer emulation never really tickled my fancey, but the idea of taking all these with me on a road trip or airplane sounds awsome. Does this thing use the same emuars as a comp? or which emulators work best?
2)being 2.5 firmware, I probably have to adjust the firmware. I think downgrades are available, but I also want to know how does this work. Can I dual boot in a sense? can I boot up in 1.5 to play emulators, and then reboot in a current firmware to play a umd? is it easily changable back and forth? I want to play some PSP games that require the higher firmware, but the emulaters are almost just as important to me. Is it possible to have a PSP do both these functions easily.
3) the web browser is pretty neat, but it's also lacks a lot of cpabilities, I was wondering if anyone knew of an alternative web brower for this thing that has more capabilities.
I don't know if people have answered these questions before, but I'd appreciate any help. you can respond here or pm me if you'd like to help out. I believe there's a bit of time and reprograming that goes into this, but if it's more of a one time deal, IE i install all these things, and reprograms some other things then, I can do what I want, I'm willing to learn how to do this and take the time to make this thing do what I want.

1)The PSP uses it's own special kind of emulators for homebrew. They are VERY easy to install and there are tons of sites where you can download them from. NesterJ (NES), Neo Geo CD, HuE (TG-16), Rin (GameBoy/GameBoy Color), PSPVice (Commodore64) and DGen (Genesis) are some of my favorites and all run smoothly.
2) You CAN dual boot firmwares on a 1.5 PSP (see my thread earlier from earlier this week: http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=88976 ). How it works is you basically have whatever firmware you want to dual boot installed on your memory stick and your PSP reads from that whenever you want to boot it. When you want to go back to 1.5 (or whatever FW is on your PSP), just reset your PSP and it's back to normal. I've got the 2.71 firmware on my stick right now, so I can play ALL homebrew and ALL UMD's + ISO's on my PSP without any problems.
3) Yes, there are alternative web browsers you can use. I'd just stick with the 2.7x Sony one though because that's the only one that can handle Flash at the moment.
The PSP homebrew scene can be a bit overwhelming if you are new to it since there is so much out there to do on your PSP. A good place to start is the forums at PSP Updates. They've got tutorials for EVERYTHING there involving homebrew and firmware modding, so check it out if you need some help. PSP-Hacks is another good one to go to as well, especially if you are looking for info on hacking that isn't allowed on other PSP sites.

Just follow tutorials on pspupdates.qj.net (http://pspupdates.qj.net) and you should be fine. Google is a help if you get lost or stuck. I've been successful with PSP emu and downgrading. I might even still have the files, if you need them.
If you're going to downgrade, make sure you don't have one of the non-compatible models. If you pop open the UMD door, look inside on the right side. If there is text printed on the board, then you have one of the non-compat ones. If it's bare, then you should be in the clear to downgrade.
For emulators, go to pspbrew.com, and click on the Brewpack BETA. It's a cool service that allows you to pick the emus you want, and it'll complie them into an extractable package, or you can get a zip file and manually move them(I prefer this). I was able to get NES, TG16, Genesis, and SNES fromt he site and they work perfectly.

thanks oobgram for the emu site.
I checked my umd slot, appears to just be metal and such, didn't see any text, so that should be good. I will need someone with the 1.5 firmware. I've been trying to crash course myself in the definitions of things in the last 2 days. I wanna make sure I got this down before I try to downgrade. If I brick the flash or currpt on 2gb card I'd be pissed.
from what I can figure, I should use the 2.5/2.6 easy downgrade. then I think get the new devhook, which is an eloader/eboot if I understand this correctly.
After the downgrade is complete, I essentialy have a 1.5 PSP, I can download the emulators and such and play those here and then I could boot devhook which plays an emulated 2.71 firmware for umds nd such. If this is correct could be pretty nice once all the pieces are put togeather.
I only have one friend with a PSP and he has it for the intended use, so it kinda sucks where I'm at cause I don't personally know anyone who has tried to downgrade or emulate.
also I've been considering geting a $20 256 card to try some things first without the risk of screwing up my 2GB card.

The 1.5 firmware shouldn't be hard to find. Just search the download section/forums on PSP-Hacks.com and it's most likely posted on there somewhere.

I have a step-by step .exe file thingy that I used. It worked perfectly.
I can post it up to my site in the morning (It's at work). Lemme know if you want me to!

yeah that would be cool. I'm hoping to get this downgraded as that seems to be the toughest thing, then I can ask about getting the apps and such running.

Before doing anything, I strongly recommend backing up your mem stick to the PC if you have anything on it like saves, music, pictures, etc.
The only catch to this whole downgrading thing is that you need a copy of GTA: Liberty City Stories if you have a 2.5 or 2.6 PSP. If you can rent one from Blockbuster of Hollywood Video, you'll most likely get one that works fine, as I've heard that later releases of the game have patched the exploit.
If you haven't set up the eloader yet, which you'll also need, then here's a link to an exe file that'll do it for you, all you need to do is hook the PSP to the computer and run the file:
http://www.dustincarter.com/dp/eloader097.exe (800k)
Once that's done, here's the link to the downgrader itself:
http://www.dustincarter.com/dp/Downgrader2.50-2.60ENFULL.exe (13.9 MB)
Things to keep in mind: You run the risk of bricking your PSP by doing this. I personally had no problems using these particular exe files to get mine up and working, but YMMV. Use at your own risk, of course.
Good Luck!
