View Full Version : Anyone collect classic Macs?

In my vast computer collection, a good part of it is made up of Apple Macintosh computers. The first one I picked up was a Mac SE, rescued from a school dumpster; a Mac Classic and Classic II (as well as enough parts to keep them all going) soon followed. Since then, I have expanded my Mac collection from one-piece Macs such as the Apple Lisa 2/Mac XL in my avatar (sadly, down for the count at the moment) all the way to semi-current Macs, such as the PowerMac G4 I am typing this on. Does anyone else on this board have any vintage (or otherwise) Macs to speak of?

I just have a MAC G3 desktop and that's all I plan on getting. I got it about 2yrs ago and it's like a big paper weight, in addition the OS-X 10.1 on it is unstable even after I do fresh reinstalls with full reformats. I'm planning on just installing BSD on it and storing my OS-X install discs somewhere far away.

I do, and I hate Microsoft... but that is beside the point.
I have 2 LCIIIs, a broken Performa 2000, and a Mac Classic

I know it may be nitpicking but Apple II computers weren't Macs.

As I am moving soon, I shall have to somehow jettison my Performa 5260 CD, Quadra 610, and at least one of my 6100 PowerMacs. Not that I actually paid anything for any of them (well, aside from monitor adapters and Ethernet dongles).

I have two working Macs: a G3 iMac and a PowerMac 6100/60. Both of these are in addition to the cases for a Mac Plus and a Mac Color Classic, which sit on my todo list to be aquariumified. Hardly a collection, but I'm happy with it. I still use the G3 from time to time, but generally only to play games (Mortal Pongbat and Realmz, for the most part.)

What is up with that proprietary video connector (apparently it's called hdi45) on the back of the first-generation Powermacs? Yes, Apple apparently included an adapter when you bought the computer (and woe to he who gets a Powermac without said adapter), but why bother at all? I've never seen hdi45 used anywhere else.

Apple was manufacturing monitors which used that port, namely the AppleVision. They had a marketing name for the connector as well, the "Apple Multimedia Connector". I think they were running more than just one-way video over the connector, however I am not sure about that.

I've picked up Macs at thrifts and rummages for years, mainly because I couldn't pass up a working computer that was worth thousands of dollars in the past, for 5 bucks. It was also a hoot to see all of the personal information that people would leave on these things...Had I been an evil person, I could have caused a lot of headaches.

I would also swap out the memory and hard drives as I acquired bigger and better, and always had a pretty decent second and third Mac on hand. My best find was a Color Classic for 6 bucks at a Goodwill. It had obviously been tested by others, but left behind because it didn't power up when plugged in...lucky for me these people didn't know you needed a keyboard to turn on the Color Classic.

I souped up the CC with an LC motherboard and some other software tricks (I believe it's called a Mystic conversion), and still keep it around. Sadly, due to space issues I had to get rid of the rest and ended up selling nearly 20 systems for $70 through an Ebay pickup-only auction...boo hoo. Here's what my Mac shelf in the basement used to look like:

Still have the motherboard from an original 128k Mac that I'm going to turn into a wall clock some day.

Bring back the Scrapbook!

Someday I need to actually catalog and take a picture of my Mac collection. I know it is up to at least 30-40 Macs and slowly growing (I just got an old Lime iMac a month ago).

I just love Mac, plus it comes in handy for my display at the Midwest Gaming Classic!

I've got a Mac Plus, my very first ebay transaction from 1998!
