Alright, I'm new to collecting old computer games, so bear with me. I saw Day of the Tentacle for $5 at a Goodwill. I know 2 things:
1) It's Maniac Mansion 2
2) There's a secret level in Zombies Ate my Neighbors with the same name.
After some poking, I'm regretting turning it down. Should I rush back tomorrow and snag it before someone else does?
And one more thing. What constitutes an old PC game being "complete?" The Day of the Tentacle I saw had the box, disk sleeve w/ disk, and manual. In general, are these things all I need to worry about when collecting PC games? Thanks as always for your input guys!

I would have definetly picked that up, but it's not that big of a loss. I usually will pick up any old lucasarts pc games if I see them around, especially if they are complete. They are just so hard to find now, $5 is nothing.

Pick it up. DOTT is one of the best games ever and you should play it. And it works perfect with SCUMMVM (http://www.scummvm.org) on modern pc, handhelds and even mobile phones.

You know, Day of the Tentacle is easily worth $5. Heck, it is worth $50 if you ask me! But, obviously, if you can pick it up for just five measly bucks... then you've got yourself a bargain.
And, if you're picking up the CD version... then you'll get the top-notch voice acting! The disk version only had a little during the cutscenes, I think.
In general, are these things all I need to worry about when collecting PC games?
The only advice I can really offer you is this: be absolutely sure what form of password protection the games use. Most LucasArts games from back in the day used passwords.
Monkey Island, for example, used a "code wheel". You'd want to make sure this was in the box before handing over your money. I think Day of the Tentacle had the passwords written in the manual.
This doesn't apply to the recent LucasArts Classics reprints on DVD, as I'm pretty sure they did away with this protection.

I just finished DOTT a few days ago, so I must say...
Hell. Yes.

IIRC it had a hint book included with the game as well when it was released on CD (not sure about on disk). At least, I don't recall buying the hint book seperately (same for Sam & Max).
but for $5? Holy shit would I ever recommend the hell out of it.

Day Of The Tentacle had the codes in the manual - i think they were pictorial - and game orientated. So make sure you have the manual. The voices are great in DOTT, though I've never played the CD talkie version. The disc-version i believe only has them for the intro and maybe a couple of other places.

By all means, yes. Easily worth more than that.

Success!! Although it does make me wonder why someone donated it... Box and manual in great shape, Cd has seen better days but heck I can't wait to fire this puppy up and see what all the hubub is about.
Ah and one more thing. Anyone know of a resource that'll have approximate rarities and values for old PC games? I know it's a lot more obscure realm than actual console games, but this little gem makes me wonder about the rest of the cool stuff I could find. Thanks again, guys!

as an investment DOTT is only just worth $5, but as a game its worth $50 easily, one of the few games I ever played to completion. make sure you play it, not just shelve it.
hey there mista tenicle guhy !!

A lot of folks seem to ask for things like that, but no, to my knowledge it does not exist.
Besides, the problem with such guides is that sometimes common games are more valuable than rare games if they are highly desirable, but it is difficult to put a firm price value on them because the price you'll get for it is just whatever the market will bear. I guess it is slightly easier with console games since the collecting community is sufficiently large.
yes.
Not so much for collecting, I don't know about collecting old PC games, but it is one fun game.

Is it possible for anything in the world you can even think that you want NOT be worth $5?

Day of the Tentacle easily fetches at least $30 on eBay. And that's for the CD ONLY. Complete copies go for much more, and if you stumble upon the super rare triangle box variant (it's like a tube or something), that can go for more than $100.

Hmm... I haven't seen or heard anything about this before, Sniper. I don't suppose you have a link to a picture or some more information, do you?
A while back, I came across a web site which documented all the known box variants for every LucasArts adventure game. And I am pretty sure (if I remember correctly) that I didn't spot anything about this.

Apologies, I just saw this post now.
I saw an auction for this game on eBay about six months ago. It went for over $100, and surprised the HELL outta me. But hey! There's a copy of it on eBay now!

This particular release is rare because retailers HATED this box; it wouldn't fit with the other ones, and they had trouble stocking them because of it. (At least according to that eBay auction I saw back then.)

Cheers for all of that, Sniper. Damn - it looks really neat. I'd dearly love to own a copy, but I have a feeling it'll never happen.
I wonder how rare it actually is...
