So, I got this game last week, and it's quite surprising. Prior to last week, I hadn't played it for over eight years. I was totally frustrated back then, but now I'm playing this game and finally beginning to get it.
KI Gold is a clever mix of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat with a little King of Fighters thrown into the mix. It's so damn complicated! They took the general control setup from SF, the dial-a-combos and blood from MK3, and the ridiculous joystick movements from KOF. It's insane!
Having never played the arcade games, I don't have the mindset that the graphics in KI Gold suck. In fact, I think they held up rather well throughout the years. The characters look a little on the blurry side, but they are big. The backgrounds look really nice, and the textures have some nice definition to them. It's not a blur-fest like in many other N64 games.
The game is very stylish. It's got all the style from Soul Calibur, but in KI Gold, you've actually got to do more than mash buttons to get that style. The combos look impressive. The finishers are pretty cool. Combo's machine gun finisher is a riot, and Fulgore's death beam from above that melts your opponent is awesome. And let's not forget the girls in thongs :-P
The music is impressive. There's a lot of variety. There's rock, techno, dance, classical, and some other stuff. The most impressive thing is how a couple of the songs have vocals. Back in 1996 on the cartridge-based N64, this was a big deal!
The most annoying thing about the game is how you can only beat Gargos by getting him into your combo and then finishing off the combo with a launcher. He can only be defeated by launching him off of the castle and into the pit below.
I know KI Gold isn't a serious tournament-calbier fighter like KOF98 or Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, but it's a lot of fun.
