I vote for the Sega Saturn gamepad, cause its best for fighting games and is VERY comfortable.

While I love the SNES gamepad, the Saturn is the most comfortable.

Tough to say. I voted Xbox, because the S-controller is my favorite of the most recent consoles, and the Xbox 360's controller further refines it, making it my favorite controller to date. However, I H-A-T-E-D the "Duke."

Out of "retro" consoles, I'd have to SNES. Perfect blend of functionality and simplicity.

I voted NES.

I like to feel the pain of the sharp edges. Gives me and excuse to calm down and take a break.

Heh, NES pads haven't ever bothered me.

Oh, and the Duke didn't either, but now that I've got this 360 controller I can agree it's an improvement overall.

Anyway, people have raised issues about the precision of the Genesis D-pad, but I haven't had trouble with it.

SNES pads, on the other hand...god, I don't have one single friggin' pad that I can play Operation Logic Bomb on. Damned buttons don't stay in place.

Seconded. Especially great with shmups.

Sega Saturn (2nd version of course), followed by the good ol' Dual Shock.

I voted for the Dreamcast pad. It feels good in my hands, it's light, I don't usually get "sweaty hand syndrome" from it (if there is such a thing, but you get my drift I think), and it jsut feels very natural and easy to use. I love the button layout, I think it's one of the best overall controllers, good for any type of game (and great for fighters, though I agree the Saturn pad is better for them).

After that, I have to give the nod to the Controller S. I can't believe Microsoft can make such a great piece of hardware...

I voted sega saturn. It's really a close one between that and the 6 button genesis controller as theyre very similar. They're both very comfortable and i like the button lay out and so on. Not too simple like the nes/sms but not so complicated like the xbox/n64/cube etc.

The snes one is pretty sweet too.

PlayStation Dual Shock/Dual Shock 2.

I find it excellent for every time of game except 2D fighters that don't use the joystick.

The d-pad rips up my thumb severely if I'm trying to use it for half/quarter circle moves.

I also like the Dreamcast, SNES, N64, and Saturn controllers.

My all-time favorite controller would have to be the GameCube's WaveBird.

The GameCube controller is by far the best. It's great for anything 3D. The only thing it's not good for is fighters, but that's where Hori comes in. They make a great 2D controller that is practically an SNES replica.

When it comes to controllers, the GameCube easily tops the competition. It's perfect for 3D and 2D.

All Game pads suck, I'm a western world joystick person (control = right, fire = left).

How do I play games since the NES-style gamepads took over the gaming world?
Badly....

I like the NES best, since it give me the most nostalgic feeling, but the PSX and PS2 controller are also great.

Mine would have been the SNES controller but the Sony Dualshock 2 beats it out. That controller is by far the most comfortable, well laid out controller I have ever used. I’m not a fan of dinner plate controllers like the Saturn, Dreamcast and Xbox. They’re too cumbersome and wide for my tastes.

Don’t get me started on the N64 controller…..what a pile of shit.

ALL HAIL THE DUKE!!

too bad a controller like this will never see the light of day again

Most comfortable controller i ever used

I voted Xbox - all though there should be a distinction between the DUKE and the S

My favorite pad of all time was a third party SNES pad called the ASCII Pad. It was great - made bomb jumping in Super Metroid a breeze :D

I put Saturn pad for the reasons people mentioned above. Love it so much bought one for my PC.

I'd have a tough choice if either Neo stick (pro or 2nd type) or the NGCD pad were on there!!! I know there's a slot for "other", but how can there be a choice for CD-i and not for any of the NG controllers? I'd say those are far far more common and liked.

Caal me crazy, but I actually liked the XBOX Duke Controller more than Controller-S (the XBOX one, not the 360 one with the oh-so-comfortable triggers).

As if anyone would vote for Jaguar. LOL

For me -

1.) Xbox 360
2.) GameCube Wavebird
3.) Nintendo 64

Well, I voted for the Genesis controller, but I want to mention that I am specifically talking about the first party 6-button controller, which may have the best D-pad in existance. The Japansese/US model 2 Saturn controller is also excellent though.

As far as current-gen controllers go, I would have to give the nod to Microsoft, as the XBox controller has excellent analog sticks and an excellent d-pad. Unlike most people, I like the Dualshock, but I will be the first to admit that the d-pad sucks. The Gamecube controller is more comfortable than it looks, but it is butt-ugly and has an uncomfortably tiny d-pad. I guess it's good for little kiddie fingers like Xizer's, though. :P

I voted NES purely because its symbolic, it shows how games are by its hard edges and classic technology...

Dreamcast.

It fits into your hand, and all the buttons are easy to reach!

Also, it had the VMU's in the center.

Sega Saturn Analog controller for me.. it seems to work great for most games, feels solid and can often double up as the racing controller for games.

The only downside is a few poorly programmed games will not work with it at all and must be disconnected to play.

The only ones I know of are:

Lemmings 3D

and

Chaos Control

I vote Playstation Dual Shock, but only on the general 'form factor'. My gamepad of choice in that configuration is the old MadCatz #8016 DualForce. It fits my hands better than the Sony unit, and since the directional is a single piece of plastic, I don't tear my hands up on the case. The analog sticks still functioning in digital mode is icing on the cake.

Otherwise, I go for the Sega Genesis gamepad, in either three or six button flavors.

I prefer the regular Sega Saturn controller. Damn that thing was comfy. Most responsive D-Pad.

The MadCatz #8002 PS1 controller is great. It's actually got a d-pad that doesn't suck ass.

I love the SNES pad as far as retro goes, I'd have to pick xbox/xbox360 pad as far as current gen.

I've always been amazed that so many people are partial to the PS1 dual shock. The dual shock is a good controller, but I think it get's way more hype than it should. So it does rumble better than the N64 controller or the Dreamcast, big deal. That seems to be it's claim to fame. That, and the fact that it's relatively comfortable to hold.

Truth be told, I don't think it's design is as comfortable as everybody thinks it is. It's not bad, but people make it out to be the most comfortable controller ever. Then there is the D-Pad. I've always hated that D-Pad.

Agreed, Anthony. The Xbox 360 controllers blow it out of the water.

I've never been partial to Sony's pad, in part because it doesn't fit my hands very well, and like you, I despise that separated d-pad. Rumble is something I can take or leave, to be honest. And as I noted earlier, I prefer the MadCatz, in part because they improved on the design, at least in my opinion.

Now if only the manufacturers will begin to realize that having so many buttons is not necessarily a good thing.

I'm the oddball who voted for the Jaguar. That controller is the *perfect* size for my hands, and I love how it feels. While it wasn't utilized in enough games, I even like the idea of the numerical pad on it, although outside of a few games it simply wasn't utilized in a very interesting way.

The GameCube controller would probably be my second choice, but it doesn't fit my hands quite as well.

I like the Xbox controller, and especially the Xbox 360 controller, but I find that I am not as keen of using the two stick method to do much, so the simplicity of the Jaguar controller still appeals to me.

Earlier controllers -- like the NES and SNES -- just seem to be too small.

I chose the Gamecube.
The only thing I don't like about it is that it might be a little bit too complicated (With the C-stick and all). But once you're able to master the controller, I think it is perfect.

I had to vote for the SNES gamepad... It has always been my favorite.. I mean they took a great controller, NES, and made it even better... It will always have a special place for me.
