I love it. This is probably my most favorite soundtrack ever in video game history. I can't think of anything else that tops it. It's like they took Iron Maiden, made them 8-bit, and put it on an NES cart.

Its not usual that games have so many cool tunes as the Mega Man games for NES got.

I totally agree. After playing mega man 2 I can never get the music out of my head. Those "midi-licious" tunes really stick with you.

My favorite selections from Mega Man 2 are the Bubble Man theme and the Flash Man theme. I remember going to Bubble Man's stage and setting the controller down just to let the music play.

I'll have to pick that soundtrack up... if I can locate it.

That tune is indeed very great, but the best ever? Not in my opinion :)

I love MM2 and its music but it seems like MM3 is always stuck living in MM2's shadow. I personally think MM3's title screen music blows MM2's away.

I was just about to mention this. The music at the title screen is just gorgeous. I blows my mind that the soundtrack is killer and it's on an 8-bit system.

What always amazes me about the soundtracks to games like these are the levels of music production involved. Given that they are working within a limited synthesizer range and have to create a piece of music that is at once recognizable enough to capture the feel of the stage, but also not so droningly repetitive that you want to poke out your eardrums on the 50th trip through, that's no small feat.

As an aside, it seemed like the best music resided firmly with the Capcom titles (mainly Mega Man and Disney games) or Konami (Contra, Castlevania, Jackal, etc.), which made great games even better. It's just a shame that it's such a lost art form when you can just plug in popular hit X these days (not that it detracts from games like GTA or THPS that do this :) ).

I always favored the music in Metal Man's stage.

Well yeah, that's why I said it was one of the best. It's up there, but not at the top.

I mean, I can totally imagine myself running around as a little blue robot killin' shit to that music.

I love the music in the opening scene of megaman 2 when it starts off slow and its going up the building then you see megaman without his helmet on the roof and it speeds up and gets intense and his hair's all blowin in the wind...after that your just like "This game is gonna be AWESOME". Megaman games do have some great tunes

I loved the music in Dr. Wily stages of Mega Man 3! Man, I thought I was the only one too. I wish Capcom would release a special soundtrack or something.

It kinda makes sense that the designers would put so much efort into the game when you consider that in Japan the game is called rockman and Hideo Kojima has stated in interviews that his inspiration for making the franchise was he wanted a game that could accent and be enhanced by rock style music. but comon people Nobou is the best when it comes to MIDI tracks and 8-bit sound programing. We ALL recognize the music even if we don't know from what.

Yep.. Rockman. The guy said the reason he's called ROCKman is because of the game's music. i.e. "Rock and Roll".

Although I wouldn't exactly label the really good NES tunes as rock and roll, I guess I'll accept it since he is the designer after all LOL

lol, the music will give you strength :)
The music when you get a new wepon in MM3, that is damn sweet. Its only a short loop tho, but i can listen to it for probly 30 min without getting tired. I also found an old tape with this musictrack. I had recorded it directly from TV and i remember walking around with it in my walkman haha. Loved it when i was a kid, and still loving it ;)

Megaman 2 is probably my favorite soundtrack overall, but nothing matches the greatness of the Duck Tales "moon level"

I absolutely adore Mega Man music. One of my favorites is the song in the third stage of Dr. Wily's castle in Mega Man III.

For everyone's enjoyment, I'll post a link to something I stumbled across a couple of years ago, although you might have heard of it...

http://www.zebox.com/projectx/

Basically, the music reinterpreted with actual instruments. Some of it is kind of "meh", but other parts are amazing. Check it out.

Hideo Kojima had nothing to do with Mega Man, by the way.

So thats where that "metal" version of Metal Man's music came from.

I've had an MP3 of that for a couple of years and was curious where it came from.

What's also cool is that some bands are making the mega man tunes with actual instruments like the "minibosses".

I also found this page as well. It's really groovy. Granted it's drum machine, it still sounds killer. I'm pretty sure it's been posted here but oh well.

It has heavy dreamtheater influence IMO.

CHECK IT OUT!

I dont think that have any connections. I mean, the Mega Man music have been remixed alot so that there are some fans that have made a metal version of it is no big suprise :) There is probly even a polka version LOL

I also have a heavy metal version of the Castlevania tune and i had a Street Fighter 2 rock/metal album too. So much thats been remixed.

Quoted for truth. The entire soundtrack is awesome, but that one song is defintely my favorite. The sound design was just awesome, even in the final level where it's silent right up untill you meet the boss. I really felt like there was something dreadful ahead.

I agree about Wiley Stage 1 - definitely one of the best pieces of NES music. I'm also really partial to bubble man's theme.

Although I do have to say, my absolute favorite piece of NES music is from Rygar - the "Caverns of Sagila" - I used to play all the way up to that part, which took a little while, just to leave the music playing in the background, through a stereo. I just think they really nailed the perfect tune for adventuring through a dark cave full of bizarre monsters. Give it a listen sometime!

http://www.zophar.net/nsf/ ... You can get the .NSF file and a player on that page. It isn't as nice as a simple MP3, but they're ridiculously small files, at least.

Capcom music in general is among the best video game music there is, right up there with Square and Konami. The Castlevania: Symphony of the Night soundtrack is excellent, but everyone knows that by now.

In 2000, my girlfriend at the time thought I was insane when I used to listen to a tape with various Mega Man (NES and X1), Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania (all) and Y's songs in the car. LOL

Not surprisingly, I'm a huge Maiden fan. :-P

Well, let's not forget Sunsoft...Batman (s), Blaster Master, Ufouria, Mr. Gimmick, Journey to Silius, Fester's Quest...there's so many...

But yeah, Konami and Capcom consistently had the best music. Can't say Nintendo's own music wasn't awesome either.

It's pretty odd that in order for the designer of Rockman to get awesome music in his game he had to name it Rockman. Would the team not have made the music so awesome if he just told the sound guys to make the music good? If more designers set the bar like that, all games would have awesome music. Hell, some designer should just come along and name his game "Best Music, Graphics, Story, Play Control, and Fun, Ever, Period!" in order for his team to make it so, heh heh.

Dang, you beat me to the punch rbudrick. I was all about to mention the mostly overlooke Sunsoft. They were right up there with Konami and Capcom when it came to consistent, quality NES sound tracks. I really wish NA got Mr. Gimmik and Ufouria...

Anyway, back to Mega Man, I like the soundtracks from just about every title. 1 and 6 were a little weak, but 2-5 were solid. Of course, 2 & 3 are also my favorites, but I personally think 3 edges out 2 by a lot. Every track is gold on Mega Man 3. All eight robot masters had very catchy tunes, and so were the two different Dr. Wily's castle themes. I also dig both the boss battle tunes. And the ending credits and opening scene, probably the two best tracks on the game.

Mr. Gimmick got one of the best Soundtracks for NES.

If I'm not mistaken, extra channels were added to the cart (completely unique mapper, iirc). I love Mr. Gimmick....just played through it for the first time last fall. It was so damn good...Ufouria too. Just awesome games.

Ye, but its only for the Famicom version :\ I dont think the NES have the hardware to run it. Altho, i have no idea what will happend if you try to run a custom soundchip game with a 60 - 72 pin converter. Anyone tried?

It doesn't work. A simple mod (a wire and a resistor, I think) fixes this.

Ok, so the NES do have the possibility to play games with custom soundchips (with modification) ?

Snake Man's Stage music is one of my favorite video game tunes of all time. :)

I second that. Snake Man's stage sounds great. It sounds like the background music you'd hear in an NFL Championship dvd that gets released after a team wins the Super Bowl.

Quick Man's stage is great, too. In fact, I liked every theme on Mega Man II, except for Crash Man's music which gets a little repetitive. The stage itself is repetitive, too.
