View Full Version : Squad based shooters... I have no interest. WHY?

Man, you know what really sucks? I just got done watching the Mass Effect trailer, and that game looks so cool, but the unfortunate thing about it, is that ultimately, it's a squad based shooter. And for whatever reason, I simply can't seem to stand squad based shooters. I'm not sure why it is. I know there are lots of people out there that like them, it's just I don't. I don't like to be tethered to other dudes. I want the freedom to just do whatever I want and not have to worry about controlling the movements of other dudes too.
It's probably the number one reason I never really got into GRAW. Just couldn't really get into the whole squad based thing, and giving orders and doing all that. I know, I know, it's not that bad once you get the hang of it, but I must admit that when I first noticed that Mass Effect was really a squad based shooter, I immediately became depressed. It's just not my cup o' tea. I wished I liked them, it would make things easier on me. Same thing with turn based RPG's. I can't stand those either. So I can never play a Final Fantasy game, because I just can't get into it. For some dumb reason, I feel the need to control my own character in battle, and only my character, and be free to fight the bad guy with my button presses, and not some attack command. I wish I wasn't such a twitch gamer.

Well, there's that old saying "different strokes for different folks" (and so on and so on a shoobie-doobie-doobie).

I'm actually going to force myself to play through Mass Effect, even though I don't really like that style, just because the Roll Playing elements, and the interaction with the NPC's looks so absolutely amazing! Heck, even if it was turn based, I would probably force myself to play it.

Thank you for saying what I was going to say. I don't like them either, and I attribute that reason for it.
Well, at first I was enjoying Metal Gear Online quite abit, but with all the cheaters and glitchers out there it makes it a little hard. If you can get a good game going, thats where its at.

Hmm I thought Mass Effect was more like KOTOR than Ghost Recon, guess I was wrong.

It pains me to read that. GRAW is the 2nd best game on the 360 so far (Oblivion being #1). I think in some ways it is the best game. I thought the ability to control your squad/chopper/armor was one of the best parts of the game. I had more fun with squad levels than most of the solo sequences. To each their own I guess.
I think I just talked myself into playing GRAW again tonight.

Exactly.
I tried to love GRAW as well, the game IS good, the story is good, but I just can't play it for more than 30 minutes.
Same goes for stealth games, loved the concept of Splinter Cell when it first came out, but just couldn't get into it.

I've never been into games like this as well. I hate the fact that if one of my team members dies, the whole mission goes pfft. I am not a baby sitter. I want to look out for #1, M-E!
When I played RE4 i hated having to look after Ashely. Yet, after a while I would just leave her in "safe" spots and do what was needed then call her along.
Maybe someday I'll get used to it, but until then. I stay clear from those games.

For me, I just don't enjoy strategy, and squad based shooters are basically a balance between strategy and shooter, the latter of which I very much enjoy. So, for that reason I only half enjoy squad stuff, maybe you're in the same boat?

If it makes you feel any better, I don't enjoy dating games and I don't understand why. I mean, I enjoy courting the opposite sex and discussing various topics with them plus I love adventure games so you'd think that dating sims would be right up my alley. Usually they have some pretty nice graphics, too. For whatever reason, I just can't get into them.
WHY?!?!?!?

I like the Brothers in Arms series a lot. If the commands are fairly simple to execute, I'm not bothered by it at all.

I agree but have one exception.
I love playing Brute Force. It seems like you don't have to do as much babysitting as I hear about in other newer games.

Man, you know what really sucks? I just got done reading this post, and that avalance of text looks so cool, but the unfortunate thing about it, is that ultimately, it's a brainless rant. And for whatever reason, I simply can't seem to stand rants that belong in one's blog.
As DrJustinRamone said. This is really just trollbait, nothing more.
