I have a friend who absolutely HATED Ocarina of Time. He also hates Super Mario 64. http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=89974
So we talked about it and I told him that these were games that everyone loved. So to prove our points we both decided to take it to the DP forums.
What is your opinion on The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time?
EDIT
I want to know how people feel about this.

I voted "great", I loved Zelda:OoT.
It was the perfect transition from 2D to 3D, if felt like a Zelda game in every aspect. The controls were spot on, it had an epic feel with tons of dungeons, and the graphics for the time were very impressive. I really enjoyed the story and the time travel aspect of it too.
Definitely one of the greatest games of all time in my book.

It was ok. I played through it all and don't really remember much of it. Obviously it didn't make that big of an impact on me. Personally I prefer zelda in 2D, especially the handheld ones. For 3D ones, I did really like Wind Waker but most people seem to hate that one so maybe i'm just crazy.

It's the most incredible 3D adventure I've ever played. Best game ever? Probably.

I must have missed the boat on that one. Following my hatred of the N64 I sold my launch unit in December of 1996 and did not pick up another N64 until late 2000. This includes overlooking Zelda OoT when it launched. When I finally got around to playing it the graphics killed the game for me. Being 2001’ish and with the PS2, Dreamcast, GC and Xbox out I just couldn’t get over the blurry ass N64 graphics. I have it and to this day I’ve played it for around 1-2 hours tops.
Possibly I’m robbing myself but I just can’t bring myself to play it….ever.

My vote goes to Final Fantasy X for "Best game ever". But that's a different story for a different day.

Another "all time best" vote - if it had been Zelda 3 (Link to the Past), I would've voted Great!
I should probably replay it to see if my feelings about it still hold up, but I have a strong suspicion that they do.

Seek out the Gamecube Ocarina of Time/Master Quest compilation disc. Blurry graphics problem solved.
Ocarina is a fantastic game. The only Zelda that tops it is Majora's Mask.

Nope, not everybody.
Everyone that had an N64 when they were brand new, ESPECIALLY if they were young/it was their first system, considers Mario 64 and Zelda OoT 2 of the best games of all time.
Meanwhile there are guys like me that got Playstations instead. I think Mario 64 and Zelda OoT are alright, but I always reach for the NES, SNES, even GB incarnations first.

GREAT.
My favourite Zelda game, although, as a general rule I'm not a big fan of the Zelda games. OoT is just an excellent 3D adventure title.
Though I'd say it's probably my second favourite adventure title behind Shenmue.

I did not like this game at all. Actually, I generally don't like 3D "behind the back" run around with the analog stick games.
Anyway, I didn't like OoT because it annoyed the hell out of me. I hated the controls, I found it hard to get Link to go in a striaght line or some specific direction. I guess that's because I'm not used to using analog sticks. And I had difficulty enduring the village at the beginning, because you had to go through all that training bullshit; every nine seconds the dialog thing pops up and tells me to press X+Y and up & down simultaniously to pick up a rock or whatever. It just just pissed me off, like a wet cat.
I stuck with it, though, until I got inside the tree. Then it was a little more tolarable. But then we started in with all the camera angle bullshit that I hate so much with 3D games. I was fighting smomething, ran against a wall, and all I saw was this big blocky wall with a big blocky green hat in the corner, while the monster was damaging me. I know that's a part of gaming now, but I will never get used to it...
Also, I hated all the characters in the village. I also hated the story so far, the little boy with no fairy thing... maybe I had so much hate for this stuff because the controls put me in bad mood, I don't know. But anyway, not 30 minutes into the game I kept thinking "Do I have to keep playing this?" After something killed me, I felt relieved that this experience was over, then I consoled myself with a little Golden Axe. I haven't played my N64 since then.
So generally, if I don't like a game within half an hour, I don't have much hope for it.
I know everybody thinks OoT is the best thing ever created by the human race, so I can't knock it for flaws or anything. I'm pretty sure it's my old fogey's resistance to the 3D game style. But OoT just happens to be everything I hate about 3D games, rolled into one. (There are several 3D games that I do like.) Maybe someday down the road, I'll adapt to this sort of thing and give OoT another try.

I didn't like it at all. My wife loved it a bunch and wanted me to help her through the game and I refused. I grew up loving the first and third zelda's and the switch to 3d didn't do it for me. Now, I own all the zelda games minus the CDI titles just because I may want to finally play the 3d ones. Maybe the Twilight Princess will finally convert me over.

I liked it, it's not my all-time favourite game like, ever (San Andreas/Mario 64 are currently tying for that honour) but it was definitely enjoyable and worth the £2.99 I paid for it second-hand. :-)
Bizarrely enough, I prefer Wind Waker though. :-/

I voted for the worst of all time. Such great hype for it, it was pushed back a few times if I remember. I beat it once and vowed to never play it again and that was in 98 and it still is that way.
A slap in the face to the NES games and SNES one. I hated the sounds little Link made when you were him, so uneccessary. I hated collecting those spiders. I hate the music. Playing through the game for me was a chore. Especially after how awesome a Alttp was.
This game is where my respect for Zelda and Nintendo took a nose dive.

There's no such thing. Oh sure, a *lot* of people will agree with you and say they love it, but there will be those who totally disagree.
And that's as it should be!
(I, for one, love all Zelda games and love OOT, but I still consider Civ II to be my favourite game of all time).

All time best for me. (Although I may rate Super Metroid higher, so definitely in my top 5)...
But yeah, it's hard to find games on DP where everybody agrees on a game that's assumed to be universally lauded. Particularly when it's a long running series of games that have changed either 2D to 3D or in terms of gameplay.
Examples:
With the exception of FF9, I prefer SNES Final Fantasy games.
I think The Legend of Zelda and The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time are great, but think Link to the Past is good but overrated.
I tend to like the different styles of Castlevania games equally.
So yeah we're a cantankerous bunch...
Cheers,
Ben

Same here. When my brother lost his job I told him I would pay him $50 to pass the water level for me. He had beat the game before so I figured it would not be a problem. Well turns out I missed a key or something and had the water too high to get it. For what ever reason he also gave up and siad I was on my own.

A vibe I've been getting from this forum recently is that it's a true sign of Digital Press member to rubbish 3D games and look down at 'kids these days' through their nose.
Okay, great you were there when the Atari, Intellivision and Coleco were king of the hill. I wish I was too, but there's nothing we can do about that.
One of the biggest reasons I got into retro gaming was so I could experience and appreciate games from all generations of consoles, and not just limit myself to current generation games. I knew that entertainment and gaming joy could come from anything from an Atari 2600 to a PlayStation 2 so I made sure I was able to play everything I could.
I figured it was narrow minded to dismiss 2D games simply 'because they were old fashioned' or whatever.
I've read several times now how so many people here (mainly the older age groups) dimiss 3D games with the "crappy camera, dumb controls, generic 3D trash shit" to many games. Yes, there's a lot of crap out there, but games like Ocarina of Time and Mario 64 really are some of the best out there.
Yeah, these games were the hit thing when I was 12 years old and so what? Sure, there's an element of nostalgia because this is the stuff I grew up with (also the SNES). You guys had Defender, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Missile Command and you would be hard-pressed to say a lot of your fondness for these games ISN'T nostalgia based.
By today's standards these games a VERY basic, and very old fashioned, but I don't dimiss them. I appreciate them as part of the foundation of video gaming, and knowing history helps determine whether something modern is truly, original or special because we've seen what's been done before.
I don't blindly rubbish anything that I don't have a particular nostalgic attachment to, and I feel it's ignorant to say otherwise.
I thought this was a forum about embracing the classics, and recognising great games on ALL platforms - not just anything made before 1990.

Dreamcaster, I don't get it. Just because some people don't agree with your views or opinions on games doesn't mean anything bad. There's no such thing as everyone agreeing. Disagreements and discussions is what makes these forums.
You sound like some of us are old foggies. I'm 24 and there's people older here then me. But for one, I would listen to their opinions about games because they been around longer and they acquired the knowledge over the years from playing these games.
If you are expecting these forums to be a perfect place and everyone to agree then you are in the wrong place.

I voted OK. I just don't like playing with the N64 controller. Been meaning to pick up the GC version and give it another go, but haven't yet.
Really didn't like Mario 64, on N64 or DS. It's not that I don't like 3D platformers, either -- I do, I just like both Link and Mario in 2D. Personal preference, nothing more. Heh, I like Metroid in 3D on the GC, even.

I don't mind disagreements, I just find their criticism little more than "3D games are dumb".
I'd expect more from people who are generally quite knowledgeable (well, from what I've seen up until this past week of rampant N64 hatred :P )

I said great
I could never really get into it when I was a kid. But I went back to play it about a year or so ago and really enjoyed it. I thought the graphics were great and so was the gameplay and I loved every second of it.
It was an amazing adventure. I have to say it is not as great as some people build it up to be, but it is one of the greatest N64 games around.

Masterpiece and was so well worth the wait, from the 5 year gap since Zelda Link's Awakening.
To put it in an analogy, Zelda LttP is to the SNES as Zelda OoT is to the N64.
Since I felt Zelda OoT had all the elements that Zelda LttP had when it comes to getting your bang for your buck. Plus OoT felt like a 3D clone of LttP, since the both try to go back to their roots of how the story of Link began.

40 year old lifetime gamer here. Your generalization certainly doesn't apply to me. Back in the day my gaming friends and I dreamed of and talked about the future of gaming with great anticipation of 3D gaming environments.
Sure, we loved the great games we had back then, but longed for a day when gaming machines gained the power we see these days.
I loved Zelda OoT, SM 64, and many 3D games since. I just finished Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube. I think, while you can certainly get that "vibe" from some posters here, generally you will find that most of us have embraced the evolution of gaming, for it is what we dreamed about for many years. I haven't finished the game, so I don't feel qualified to vote one way or another. However, I can say that I don't really care for it. I've tried and tried to play it, and get into it, but I just can't do it. I've gotten up to the first dungeon when you're adult Link, and I just dropped the game at that point. I agree with everyone who said A Link to the Past is better. Now there's a game... I've played that one through at least a dozen times, and it doesn't get old.
While we're on the subject of Zelda, Wind Waker seemed great, except for all of the damn sailing. That took so much of the fun out of it.

Again I must comment on the whole 3D thing. I embraced the change of gaming. I have current systems and love many titles on each of them. Some games made the leap to 3D flawlessly (Final Fantasy and Metal Gear ring a bell), some didn’t (Contra, Castlevania). There’s not as many “3D haters” here as many may think. We just don’t like every game ever made, yep, including the N64 and it’s “Best games ever made”.
BTW, I’ll be the first to admit that I think that 99% of Atari 2600 game are LAME. My childhood system was the NES so anything before that fails to hold my attention most of the time. That’s why I don’t criticize guys that were 10-13 years old when the N64 was new…..it was their childhood system.

I voted "good". I didn't think it was as good as A Link to the Past, and I certainly didn't think it was as good as its hype. I had a good time with it, for the most part, but it wasn't without its flaws. In particular, the early part of the game was soooo slow-paced and boring. Eventually it picked up and I enjoyed it. But there were still some annoyances and points of frustration.

I must have missed out on some of the bad aspects of the game because I immediately jumped into the GCN version. I didn't think the graphics were blurry, and I had no problems with the controls (not a fan of the N64 controller). In fact, at the time (when it was re-released on GameCube) I thought it dealt with 3D camera issues in a very clever and useful way (some 5 years after its initial release). I was happy to see the Metroid series take a similar approach with the lock on targeting.
I voted Great. Though I do agree that it isn't necessarily the most accessibe Zelda game. It's gay, especially at the beginning, but all throughout. It's also frustrating as hell if you aren't a GameFaqs whore. I remember it being almost too hard for it's own good, some of the puzzles are so out of the box you can't even find the lid. To all those who whine about the Water Temple, I hear ya.
But it's a highly rewarding game. When you do clear the Water Temple, you actually feel like you've accomplished something...and the same could be said for every dungeon in the game (because you will/did get stuck).
I dunno, maybe I just miss puzzles in games.
Jisho

I voted "Great". Saying "the best ever" is too impossible to call since there are a lot of games (ok, maybe not a lot, but enough) that are on par with this as a contender for "best game ever".
I also get made fun of because I could never beat this game. Usually I would get side tracked by life or other games.

It's pretty awesome. I have the GC remake and I've gotten stuck in almost every dungeon. Right now I'm in the water temple. Unfortunately, I haven't played it in almost a year. I really like its dungeons though, especially in comparison to WW's because of their difficulty. Easy dungeons are kind of lame in Zelda.

I voted great, even though it is probably my least favorite Zelda game of the ones I have played. That says something.
I never met a Zelda game I didn't like, though I am not about to buy a CD-i just so I can say I have. I'll pass on the games released there.
I like OOT quite a bit better than Mario 64. I don't see why people lump them in together all the time, even if they are both first-party 3D titles. With that said, I liked the Sonic Adventure games better than Mario 64.
As for Link to the Past which keeps getting mentioned, it is still a superb game but I actually liked Adventure of Link much better.
