View Full Version : Embarressed about my genny sports games

First of, I house all my games and systems on black book cases (up to 3 so far) and on my first I store my sega systems and games. Anyway I recently aquired a large bin of genny and sega cd games for $38. In the box were about 10 boxed sports games and I feel bad about them being next to my real gems. So I have resorted to turning them backwards and leaving the black plastic visible and hiding the spine. Out of curiosity has anyone else done this? LOL

I keep my (few) sports games on a differant shelf all together with my other commons/trashables. It's not fair to put the sports games with the actual awesome titles.. I think. LOL

There's nothing wrong with separating the games by worthiness/value, but turning them completely around? That's just too much. Either display them right, or don't display them at all I say.

Well, I guess it would depend on the sports game. Most systems--the Genesis for sure--have a few great sports games that I'm perfectly proud to own and play occasionally, but for the totaly crap games--of which there's always plenty as well--why even keep them?

Most of the sports titles I own are somewhat on the less common side and are pretty decent, but I don't place them next to my better titles. I try not to hide any of my games but currently I have a bunch of deep shelves with lack of surface area so it's difficult to stuff them in without placing stacks behind one another. Sucks but for now it's all the space I have. I wouldn't suggest turning them around, rather just stick them elsewhere.

I dont and I have all the Gennesis sports games. If you are embarressed about they why not just get rid of them?

A vote for the "Genny Sports Museum" shelf.

I think turning them around backwards is perfectly fine. They deserve it. They are basically the same damn game year after year.

I have managed to avoid ever buying a madden football game. Then in an SNES bundle I ordered the seller threw it in for free. I am planning on lighting the cart on fire and burrying it. Wait. No. Maybe some pet cemetary shit might happen.

I don't know what I am going to do, but the game will be demolished somehow.

I use them around the house for various random things. Coasters, balancing tables and chairs, chew toys for the dog, killing bugs, etc.

What you need to do is build a small altar to Mario in your backyard and sacrifice them in a ritual burning and ask Mario for your forgiveness for owning them in the first place.

Right now my games are in little plastic 3 drawer things, and I've got 3 of them. I've got a drawer full of my good gen games, and then I have the sports games in a 'miscellaneous' drawer (other things included are demo discs, strategy guides, and Game Gear games.) If I was displaying them, I might put them all together on the shelf away from the other genesis games, but I'd still have them up there.

Those sports games matter to someone trying to complete a collection of Genesis titles released in the US

As for the fellow with the Madden SNES title to demolish, send it to me then. I'll fork over a couple bucks for shipping LOL

If you dont want to see or play them, then hide them in a drawer or cupboard, dont put them on your shelf. However, the MegaDrive does have some fun sports games so y'know, maybe give a couple a go and you may like them.

There were some great sports games for the Genny, the Maddens, the NHL series, etc. I don't know why anyone would be embarrassed to own them. I still remember getting the original NHL Hockey, my buddy and I stayed up all night playing that game and getting drunk. I display mine proudly, it brings back some great memories.

one day a friend of mine came and saw all my genny sports games and I blushed...so I put them all in the closet. Actually I lied....that's the only space available for 580 genny games...

You should have screamed like a girl while trying to cover it up, then slapped him, and pushed him out of the room.

I keep my favorite game from each sport handy, the rest are packed away somewhere. You shouldn't feel embarrassed, some of the Genesis sports titles could be included in a "best of" list. For example, Madden '93 and NHL '94 are still in my personal top twenty and they still get played when the Genesis system is fired up.

I'm sure you misspoke and meant the Sega CD version, right, Joe?

Um, no, I meant NHL '94 is in my personal top 20 for the Genesis.

If there's a thread about embarrassing Sega CD sports games I'll pop in there and note that NHL '94 is in my personal top 10.

The only significant difference between the Sega CD and Genesis version of the game is the sound. The CD version has "real" organ music, but the cart version's music holds up really well.

That would mean turning the best hockey game I've ever played backwards on my shelf: NHLPA '93. That's not going to happen in my home. :P

Yea NHL 94 is amazing. It is one of the few console sports games I continue to play on a regular basis.

i don't see why anyone would be embarased - Unless they are tying to give the impression they have more classic games that the average person would want to play ( thinking most people could careless about classic sports titles)

its part of the genesis library - if you collect genesis games - they are a part of it -

if you don't want them - give them away, trade them in, sell them -- just don't throw them away

If I ever look at something in a collection (be it a video game, music, movie, whatever) and am unhappy with seeing it on the shelf, I get rid of it. Turning it around just wouldn't suffice, 'cause I'd still know it's there and it would continue to bug me.

Genesis sports games, however, do *not* fall into that category for me. In fact, I'm work towards having a 'complete' Genny sports collection as follows: All baseball games and all EA games. I'm missing all '98 games (just haven't really looked - it's the kinda of thing I want to stumble on for 99cents) but that's about it. Only 40% of my Genesis collection is non-sports games at this point!

One of my favorite genesis games is a Hockey game by EA, so that isn't suprising is it. Might be the same one I'll have to check but it was one of my first genny games.

I am one of the few who will admit to collecting the rehashed sports games. I'm certainly not an RPG guy or a puzzle game fan. I am more embarrassed to have those types of games in a collection than sports games. Hell, at least I can keep a friend or family member (the gamer type) busy for an hour or so by playing him or her in a one-on-one sports game.

I'm not ashamed of owning sports games in the least. The idea of displaying them doesn't embarrass me any. However, I keep all my games in a box and not on a shelf. I guess that makes this a moot point.

Sports titles are when released the most popular and bestselling titles on a system. Genny Sports games (mostly) are cheap only because they were popular. Selecting other titles above them is just a reflection of their cash value and not their 'original' popularity. They are still good games...sometimes.

Most of my Genesis sports games aren't even displayed, But i keep a few boxed/complete ones out, Like NBA Jam T.E. and Toughman contest.

Also i keep themk in sub sets. For example, the ones with flimsy paper boxes are in one area (Wich may be in a box) And all the EA Sports ones in white boxes are in another, All the black boxed ones are in their own, and the ones in red boxeshave their own section.

Personally, I'd be more embarrassed about having Genesis boxes turned around.

I'm not a fan of the sports titles, but I'm not embarrassed by the ones I own.

You want embarrassing, try going for a complete Genny collection and have your girlfriend pick the Bearnstein Bears Camping Adventure and Pocahontas off the top of a pile of games.

Her reaction... "Seriously... What the fuck?"

There's not a lot of macho ways to respond to that. "What? I need those.... how else am I going to get a complete collection?"

My copies of Spice World on PS1 are all turned sideways so that you can't read the title on the spines....Same with the Barbie titles and kiddie's games. Oh the shame we must endure for being a collector.

So has anyone here played the Barbie games? Are they any good? Do you get to ride the pony or drive the car? How about the Barbie Mansion? Is there an African American Barbie in the game? How about Ken?

i never could understand the bashing of sports games especially on the genny. i must have had many a battle in nba jam, nhl series madden, joe and so on. the best of times with the best of friends. that is nostalgia. i know there really isn't a need to get the newer titles, but some do progress. it is what it is. that is what you do. every year look forward to gettin madden and the likes. now i have my lil one playing me in nhl 96 and he's gettin lucky :D i must say hockey on the genny is just plain out fun. one of my all time great loves is a sports game (int. track and field) one of the very first games i owned when the station came out. i know there are others like me. if lance bass came out the closet, i know some of you sports lovers can too.
holla at ya man......

Seriously though. . . The only games I hide would have to be like uh . . . Can Can Bunnies (SAT). . . Plumbers Don't Wear Ties and Neurodancer (3DO) and Baldr Force Exe (PC) . . . My fiancee doesn't like to see stuff like that, so I bend, and they are in a trunk, actually with all my duplicates, and controllers and stuff. Nothing else gets hidden. I seriously have Color A Dinisaur and Barbi Race and Ride . . . Yeah my fiancee game me a weird look over those too. . . I don't think Ill ever get her.
